  • Brilliant :o)

  • Dude I still don't understand how pvc piping filters your water... I mean not saying it doesn't work, I'm just now looking into this is all...

  • @psychoninja911 Well the PVC is siphoning the water to a tank below to filter it :D

  • Hi how do you start the siphon ?

  • @mspissuoff

It is to stop the gurgling that can occur in most overflows. In this system, it is pretty pointless because the intake will be totally submerged.

  • what is the max gph flow rate for 1inch pvc it looks way to slow of flow not enough????????

  • @camp42085 around 550.

  • almost looks like the enron logo

  • How many pipes should I make for my over flow pipes box thing for my 36 gallon reef tank bowfront reply please?

  • ok can you fucking chill, you leave like 14 messages on everyones pvc overflow videos

  • AweSomo84 Why dont you read up on PVC before opening up your Yap.

    1) PVC is an INERT compound that will only fade due to SUNLIGHT or EXCESSIVE heat. I dont think that an aquarium heater can heat the water to ~60°C.

    2) Most new houses have water mains and lines consturceted of PEX which is flexible PVC. If it is so bad then why did the government allow it for human use.

    3) Most major aquariums have PVC for their tanks.

and FInally CLEAR PVC is STILL PVC you moron.

  • still great idea.

  • Does is this overflow safe in the event of a power outage? Does the siphon stay if you lose power?

  • Considering the tap water you're filling your tank up with likely comes from PVC tubes in your house/apartment, is there really a difference?

  • @OmniTranz they use copper tubes not PVC. :)

  • @supertommy33 you are wrong some parts of the country DO use pvc pipe and fittings, other places are allowed to use PEX , which is very close to pvc.

  • @IowaCoffee well in the United States most houses and buisness' use copper and cast iron pipes. my dad is a master plumber of 35+ years and he works on hospitals, houses, and buisness buildings installing pipes and whatnot. he mostly uses copper and cast iron, but for low pressure and low temp water he uses pvc to save the constumer money.

  • thanks very helpfull, but inflation is a biatch. just went down to bunnings and bought this stuff. 3m x 20mm pipe,10 elbow and 1 tee section $28.67 later but it works well so cheers

  • I like earthlings design, but this pipe design looks good too. How noisy is the pipe design-since the water has to fall a greater distance? also, should you change the diameter of the pipe base on your GPH of your pump? I think I will get the mag drive 7 for my 55 fresh

  • Noise depends on how you terminate the drains into the sump tank. If you set it up as a water fall into the sump then it's quite noisy, if you enclose it and have it immediately hit filtration media then it's much better. Also, if you add a sponge to the aquarium side of the drain you'll cut out alot of the suction sound.

  • lol was this just an add for a digi cam

  • I have heard these types of overflow boxes are very unreliable and at a high risk of failing. I have an overflow box in my videos that is under $7.50 which is more to the 'professional' style of 'big brand' boxes. Just a home made cheap version. Have you had any problem with this type of overflow? I myself haven't tried this pipe type.

  • earthling1984, i dont know what youre talking about, this thing is just perfect, and simple to make a trip to the local harware store, and no need to drill or cut just put together the pieces.

your version is cool too, just that it involves more work :D and i'm a lazy bastard. hehe 5*

  • I am not sure why these rumors are spread... I am also not sure what would make anyone believe that these fail more often than a box overflow. I have used both and think both work equally well. On smaller tanks I prefer the PVC simply because it takes up less space inside the tank. Once we start moving up in size, an overflow box is probably more beneficial.

  • If you wanted more surface skimming, could find a way to flare the intake that is inside the tank, maybe double it with a t connector instead of an elbow?

  • Watch it again, the intake head could be placed at the water level (must customize this for your particular tank water level ratio to wall height). You won't get as much as with a skimmer box, but hey, it's a good design for $6. Definitely solves the overflow problem.

  • with that design you wont get any surface skimming, i would use a weir instead of this. Good idea if you cant drill your tank though

  • I was about to comment the same thing, too small of piping to produce any flow, must have a tiny pump or plan on burning one up.

  • Very curiouse to see it in action, plz post more! In progress of building a sump and cant afford a overflow so interested! TY

  • That's a great idea. How well does it work?? any problems with it?
