You need to watch her more contemporary stuff to figure out how brilliant she is. The "character" she was trying to be in this video was just a phase in her career. Now she has settled into a crazy looking character, but makes very intelligently thought-out funny comments.

I don't know how much of Japanese pun-based comedies you can understand but comparing Gackt, who is a rock musician, to a comedian, doesn't make it seem like you've given it much thought.

The point is, i don't think she's funny. Toriis behaviour makes it boring to watch her.

Oh yes, one more thing. I've seen Torii as another character. I don't know if it's her real but i can clearly see resemblance of her crazy character even when she's "normal" ^^ ! And that's why it's easier for her to play a weird and crazy/stupid character. Japanese people are often laughing AT you not WITH you on television. Take the "Help! I am on a japanese show" program for example. The japanese are laughing at the gaijins when they're making a fool of themselves.

Again, comparing the mentality of the Japanese variety shows and Japanese comedians is like comparing apples and oranges, even though they are both fruits.

A lot of shows tend to play pranks on or tease celebrities to get a laugh, but they do it to each other so it's not a one-way thing (as in the case of laughing "at" foreigners).

Comedians can be divided into several groups, some are stupid funny, some are smart funny, etc while Torii is crazy/smart funny.
