It's her eyes guys... she just has this gaze that will hit deep in your soul. When she sings ,"Shame!" ... i feel as if i did something i should feel shame for
One can be a slave to it, or shunned by it... or you can turn your back on it. Once again, Annie put her sweet voice to it and delivered. Testify, sister!
This is so prophetic! Reality TV came and they poured their habits, addictions, perversions and other things nobody asked to see and they go on being "reality" stars...
It was always a mistake -- and the cause of some discomfort to audiences -- to present Stewart as on an aesthetic par with Lennox. She's some kind of goddess, he's a hairy unattractive dude. Nevertheless, they were great together.
They were and still are great friends though, that just so happened to be in a band together, and that was part of the reason they were put on that same level, out of default. LOL
The funny thing with the song mentioning the Beatles and the Rolling Stones is that Dave is personal friends with Mick Jagger, and probably the other Stones, as well as Ringo Starr. LOL
this song is wonderful and fit for the time it came out, wonderful ear candy, awwa so so wonderful!!! it has that synthesized sound so 1980s. Gotta love it =)
There was nothing tasteful about the 1980s, but pop music was less manufactured then and the record companies werent sure what pop videos were meant to be like so there was more scope for creativity.
Now they think they have the manufacture of the acts and the marketing of the music and visuals sussed ,
So it s all very mechanical, so it harder to find anything meaning full.
Yeah in the 80's the music industry had to follow the artists. Now the music industry leads by marketing, and we have to put up with all the bland formula drivel they put out.
I like the way she sings: "And they said all we need is love." It shows the irony of it all, when right at the beginning of this mad consumerist brainwashing, the Beatles, who were part of the brainwashing, told us all we need is love.
Oddly, this is my favorite Eurythmic song...something about it...i think it says something about self obsession, and ego. Yet, it's embrassing, while, saying shame, to a danceable beat. But, thats the Eurythmics...touching upon many emotions. I love it. Thank you.
Im not sue about the 80s being more tasteful, and the greed was worse then because it wasnt tempered by quality of life which didnt kick in until the 90s.
I agree. Looking back on the "stuff" of the 80's now, along with my memories from that decade, I find it weird because in some ways things were a lot more tasteful and less crass as it were, but in other things they were a LOT more "showing" than they are now.....
The lyrics from this song are awesome! And sum up the 21st century as well as the 80s, only difference between the 80s and now is they had better taste back then. :)
Best song they ever made from the best album they ever made. It still sends shivers down my spine, as it did the first time I heard it almost 22 years ago...
this album (this song especially) applies more today than it did at the time it was released....pretty characteristic of eurythmics who really were ahead of their time/timeless. i look at music being released today and nothing picks up where they left off, its really sad.
The message in this song is so clear. We don't need the makeup, the fashion, or money. All we need is love.

You can actually hear Dave singing in this one! Cool! :)
tall32guy 2 years ago 2
If you really listen...him "singing" is him lip-synching to Annie. Listen to her voice it is the same as when he appears to be singing.
ceruleanbutterflyliz 2 years ago
Well I can hear a deeper, male voice in the background, that I am pretty sure is not Annie. But then I could be going deaf and what do I know? LOL
