A free fall only happens when all the potential energy is used to accelerate downwards. In this case, the building fell while destroying itself. The dust is a combination of tons of drywall and sheared concrete. Ms Logician - regardless of whether the fires melted the steel or not - assuming you are correct that they steel was weakened in WTC7 - there is NO way that the resulting collapse of the building could have been at free-fall speed with just weakened steel. I think if you just type in Steel in google, you should get some Wikipedia article for which the steel iron-carbon phase diagram is cited. When your citing the melting point of steel, it largely depends on the carbon content of the steel alloy. If you refer to the iron-carbon phase diagram, you can see the phase changes associated with a given carbon-composition of steel. As steel changes phases with the addition of temperature, its mechanical properties change with it. So technically, the temperature at which steel will 'weaken', is hard to say (especially in the circumstances of World Trade Center 7).

A free fall only happens when all the potential energy is used to accelerate downwards. In this case, the building fell while destroying itself. A free fall would not have been possible without explosives involved, unless you are discrediting the laws of gravity. But whatever, you believe fire can do maths after all.

The dust is a combination of tons of drywall and sheared concrete. The rest of the building was all through out ground zero, so as far as the building turning into dust is nonsense since ground zero was a mountain of steel and concrete.

I've investigated this, and will tell you why WTC 7 fell: the WTC buildings were not separate; they were part of a single plaza, with a huge common underground garage. That garage was filled with burning fuel and other material, and the entire underground was weakened by the fires and the collapse of WTC 1 and 2. WTC 7 contained fuel tanks for generators, and those ruptured and caught fire, contributing the the underground instability.
That's why WTC 7 eventually fell.

More than 100 first responders are now dead. By the time we get to the 25th anniversary of 9/11, that number will be in the tens, if not hundreds of thousands. It doesn't take into acct the hundreds of thousands who live/work in the area of lower Manhattan, one of the most densely populated places. 40,000 is a very conservative estimate. Although jet fuel burns only at 825°C, it doesn't have to burn hot enough to melt to cause the buildings to collapse, since steel loses 50% of its strength at 648°C.

Ms Logician - regardless of whether the fires melted the steel or not - assuming you are correct that they steel was weakened in WTC7 - there is NO way that the resulting collapse of the building could have been at free-fall speed with just weakened steel. It was a controlled demolition, and it's peoples (perhaps understandable) disbelief that stops them from accepting that.

I think if you just type in Steel in google, you should get some Wikipedia article for which the steel iron-carbon phase diagram is cited. And I seriously do think they should get a bunch of experts to sort this mess out. Its dangerous when people start to 'invent' science or other things just to advance their own purposes.

When your citing the melting point of steel, it largely depends on the carbon content of the steel alloy. If you refer to the iron-carbon phase diagram, you can see the phase changes associated with a given carbon-composition of steel. As steel changes phases with the addition of temperature, its mechanical properties change with it. So technically, the temperature at which steel will 'weaken', is hard to say (especially in the circumstances of World Trade Center 7).
