IMPORTANT message to owners of large dogs. Do NOT let your kids ride your dogs like a horse. I admit it looks cute, but it makes your child think it's okay, and while the child gets bigger, the dog doesn't. You end up with four or five year olds who are too heavy trying to ride their dogs, which can cause serious injury to the dog. Dogs can end up with injured spines, or the dog can end up being in pain and biting the child to try to get him off. Just don't risk it!!!!

@formerhpguru well that depends on the child....by tradition I always get a puppy when my child is born and never had a problem with my rottweiler and now with my other baby on his way I will be getting a dane it all depends on the training of both kids the dog and child

used to have a harlequin when i was a kid, had a few large spots and almost no small spots in a pattern like a holstein cow, he was the best dog i ever had, only time i heard him bark was about once a day the neighbor's chihuahua's would finally annoy him into it, woof and three little white streaks zipped across that yard to the other side like nobody's business!

I LOVE GREAT DANES! I've never had one but I had a friend who has had them his whole life. I went to his home one day - at the time he had two - and I was in "doggie heaven." They were such sweet, HUGE, dogs...i fell in love right then and there. I hope to own one one day

Great Danes are so loving and intelligent. My 1/2 Dane 1/2 bull mastiff has the temperament of the Dane and I will never go back to any other breed! I cant believe how much they become you family! Its like having a second child...hehehe!
