I am a fan of Jason Boland and the Stragglers. I am a fan of Kid Rock. I loved JB&S version. I am happy their song got covered and I am sure he is getting paid. Kids version is good in its own right and is not a rip off. Song writers sell songs, Jason is a song writer.
@eteal88 Anyone can cover a song. Its not a matter of selling the rights. Im sure Kid Rock made arrangements with him money wise because it is the right thing to do. Outside of that he could have done it without permission and just paid $1 per album sold to the original artist. That is the maximum legal amount.

I am a fan of Jason Boland and the Stragglers. I am a fan of Kid Rock. I loved JB&S version. I am happy their song got covered and I am sure he is getting paid. Kids version is good in its own right and is not a rip off. Song writers sell songs, Jason is a song writer.

@eteal88 Anyone can cover a song. Its not a matter of selling the rights. Im sure Kid Rock made arrangements with him money wise because it is the right thing to do. Outside of that he could have done it without permission and just paid $1 per album sold to the original artist. That is the maximum legal amount.
Not to point out the obvious to you but this is most likely the best thing that has ever happened to Jason Adamo's career and I'm sure he and his entire family is PROUD that is happened.

@metalaudioengineer I have no idea where you are getting this Adamo from, but he is not who i was refering to. I simple stated that in my opinion Jason Boland shouldn't have allowed Kid Rock. to cover his song. The amount of royalties he will receive aren't worth giving up Telephone Romeo if Kid Rock is going to change half of the original lyrics and make his classic into a pop-country song.

Anyone can cover a song and record it which is called a cut and boland wont be recieving any royalties either because he's not a sell out and wont sell his songs to someone else to make money. Kid rock can suck a fat one and start writing his own songs.

Personally, I'd be more unhappy at the person or group who sold out rather than the person who covered the song, but that's just my .02. Everyone has a price. Everyone.
I had never heard of Jason Boland & The Stragglers, but after finding out this was one of their tunes, I'll probably check out some more of their material. Both versions are spectacular and unique in their own way.
