Era of Pure Raw Machines and real Physical Challenge, before hi-tech and money overtook F1 and made is so predictable..and boring..We barely had Slot Car sets and Cable Remote Controlled toy cars then...and Plastic Kits..to feel involved...and loved it.... Cheers to the 60's.
I was there in 1967. The Honda (1st) was not the fastest in the field. It won because the fastest cars broke down. The first few laps, the American Eagles (Dan Gurney's team) were out in front with no-one else in sight. I thought I was going to see a miracle. After (guessing after 43 years) about 5 laps they were DNF with some kind of mechanical. The same for about the next 3 or 4 fastest cars. The Honda kept plodding along - the rest is history.
This is often rated as Jim Clark's greatest drive. The man himself however reckoned his 1962 German GP at the Nurburgring to be better. Great driver....great man.
Honda had a lot more money to spend on an engine with the Honda name on it. Porsche didn't technically have its name on the TAG engine. But the journalists of the era, of course, put that in because it made the stories better.
Incidentally, this is film as some people noted, not video.
Correct. BMW's turbo rapidly reached its peak of development and was hopelessly unreliable in 1984 already. After Honda dominated in 1986 and 1987,Porsche cowardly withdrew with their TAG Turbo.Renault was close on power not in reliability in the mid 80's.Ferrari was so-so. Ford Cosworths's turbo engine was promising but arrived too late.
The Honda turbo was the best engine of the turbo era. Rosberg won with it in the hopelessly unbalanced Williams FW09 in Dallas 1984
@McLarenMercedes Honda engine super powerful but their chassis was a boat-.anchor. They won this race because they put their motor in a light and agile Lola chassis. Surtees a wildly popular winner because the Italians never forgot his bringing them the world championship years before.
Actually Honda worked on a faulty premise. They reasoned that an engine which had enough power could overcome any weight deficiency,in fact Enzo Ferrari thought so himself until way into the early 60's.On most tracks the 1967 Honda was a dog to drive, but on Monza with its long straight(pre-chicane days no less) it was somewhat competitive
Jim Clark would have won if he didn't get some mechanical trouble 3 laps from the end,and Graham Hill retired from an easy lead with enginetrouble
The 60's music along with the footage make this video. This is like a short clip of Grand Prix and Lemans, but it's all totally real racing footage!Superb!!
Amazing footage. The engines at the start blow me away every time I watch it. And you can't beat the groovy late 60s sounddtrack. Must find this DVD in NTSC.

If Jim Clark didn't stop by some problems on his Lotus,he would be victory safely.

Clarks performance here at Monza in 1967 is considered by many to be the greatest in F1 history.

I think that this was the last real "pure" season, before wings came along and before any safety advances.

And to imagine Honda, as a constructor, only won one more race after this... 39 years later! -_-

they were busy making some of the best and reliable motorcycles. No problems with that! :)
