There is a movie a bout a diving horse and the girl who rides her goes blind and everyone tells her she can;t dive but she does it anyway! And the movie is based on a TRUE STORY!!!!!!
my father played music many times on the steel pier with reg kehoe all girl marimba band..the one diving clown at the end of the pier moved to hershey,pa. and stayed at my dad's motel as he dove in hershey park where he had a freak accident and was killed during his act
Saw diving horses Steel Pier NJ 1965 up close-personal. Met rider & trainer. Was an experience I'll NEVER FORGET !! Courageous duo, trilling sight!!! Stayed for 2 shows. Those horses never missed a beat & to watch them go up the elevator ramp, drop & put their front legs over the edge, WOW !!!! That is how they did it then. Sonora jumped on as they trotted up ramp & just dove off My aunt knew Dr Carver....
I'm such an idiot! Humming that song to myself now, I just realized that it must have been "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Stones! Is that what it was?
im39 years old, and when i seen this video, a flood of memories came rushing back. childhood memories of my famliy going to steelpier to see the high dive show and the diving horse. thank you!
I'm 48 and know exactly what you mean about memories flooding back. I was just telling my British husband about the Steel Pier days and was thrilled to find this video to share with him!!!
When I was about 14 years old my friend Marty had a summer job of taking care of the horse. The horse was treated nicely and actually liked taking the dive. He would run right up the ramp. And would have a sense of happiness in his eye's afterwards..That's what I remember........
I grew up in Absecon. I made many of trips to see the diving horse. Didn't think anyone would have film of it. Thank you for sharing, lots memories here. Miss the old town, now live in southern MS.
i was just at AC. really great place, though the motorcycle show is so much lamer, the lady on the trapeze does nothing and the guy on the bike just rides across. kind of lame but eh, i still love the place.
The movie is about THE diving horses. Sonora also wrote a book and there's a couple good websites that tell her story. Its my favorite story in history.
Hello, My husband's father was Sonra's first cousin....When he told me that she was making "her life made into a movie.........." I thought....Yea.Right.........well.....see that it was..........I am so proud of the Arnett family.
haha! I remember the diving bell vaguely, I went in it as a very young child. Thinking back I don't know what we could've/should've seen in the NJ waters back then. Must've been like going into a swimming pool and looking under the water in the winter. But still it's a nice memory.
I heard different stories on the diving horses. First was the horse must've looked forward to diving into the cool waters in the heat of the summer. The second was the used cattle prods to move the horses up to the diving board. I don't know the truth... but pray there was never any animal cruelity back then at my favorite vacation resort.
this is so great brings back memories I was about 6 years old then and I also danced on the Tony Grant stars of tomarrow show anyone with clips I love to see them.. 46 year old mama now.
@smh910 You danced on the Tony Grant show? That is so cool! I am close to 60 now, I remember watching those shows as a kid, the whole Steel Pier "thing" was a blast!

I loved these shows when I was a kid! It was always the highlight of the summer. Now Steele Pier is nothing but carnival rides.

hello wake up that is horse abuse
ilovemyhorsethunder 3 years ago
I don't think it was abuse. The horse was the key to their income. Bet it was well taken care of. Better then going to a dog food factorey in Mex...

Some of the best times of my childhood were spent in A.C. Why couldn't they have kept the piers? These were golden years.
