  • I only make suggestions to people who really impress me. Wonderful job. Suggestions: Work out signals with your cameraman so you don't have the awkwardness at the beginning and the end. The gain was too high on the mike, so it overloaded a time or two. That hurts the quality. You rushed the tempo a little in those spots where there was no ornamentation. Keep the count ALWAYS. Wonderful work. In my ever so humble opinion, fixing those nits will make it even more impressive.

  • The absolute BEST rendition of this song on YT, and I'm dead serious.

  • wow, that felt good ..thx.great feeling.i think i saw ur soul and it's a keeper.i'll be watching

  • Incredibly beautiful! You need to do this one more time with an acoustic guitar accompaniment. Preferably a guitarist that is just as talented as you..

  • you dig in just the right way and have excellent wide vibrato. this is one of my favorite songs and as a violinist since i was 8 myself i'm quite critical. you played it amazingly!

  • That was freakin amazing! Awesome job! I hope one day I can play a fraction as good. I only started learning not long ago. I will now subscribe, lol.

  • who is the original composer?

  • @justaprep111 jay ungar

  • Gorgeous, by all standards. You have a sassy style of play which is quite nice (will get you no-where classically but you know that!) so ramble on Miss, and kick every one of their asses... every last ONE!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • you did this song so well, every time i listen to it makes me emotional by any chance are you native/indian anyway thanks for the song

  • well u didnt disapoint me. u play this so nice keep it up

  • You disappointed me when you failed at saying "Ashokan" :(

  • @sumersig did she say it wrong? i thought that's how it is pronounced

  • @SuperSeaCucumber I guess it's an accent versus.

  • Such a lovely piece, so beautifully played. Well done girl! :)

  • Lovely job! Was this recorded at UT or do practice rooms all over the world have the same doors and walls?

  • @mezrabad This was recorded at a small Connecticut boarding high school... I'm pretty sure they're all pretty similar because the ones at my current college are identical as well. :P

  • Very beautiful and plaintive. What emotion and passion you put into this amazing piece.

  • I'm getting my violin fixed and learning it, just for this song lol.

  • is this by anyyyy chance at brookside middle school in bergen county nj

  • @blayjin17 Nope, Kent high school in Connecticut.

  • I love this piece :) this was the first ever solo i did as a violinist with my orchestra back when i was about 12 and I still love it now :)

you play it so well thank you so much for uploading this :) x

  • I have listened to every version on you tube. Noone is better than you!!. Your tone, vibrato, intonation, clarity of ornamentation, the intensity of phrasing, are outstanding. The violin really sings!! The only thing I would suggest is that you allow yourself even more liberty with the tempo and dynamics, hang on to one of the those phrase-ending notes, then move ahead. They might call it milking it, but it makes it more poignant. The civil war was bloody; let the violin grieve!

  • Awesome! Can you stop by and give me some pointers?

  • man when this is played well it makes me cry 4 real

  • i love this song i play the violin and im only 14 but im really good at it and this is my favorite piece to play its so beatiful and nice violin

  • you're awesome! wish i could play like that

  • Holy christ, your vibrato gave me chills.

  • I love this song and I love the way you play it.

All I would say is slow your vibrato a little bit, but it still sounds great

  • wonderfully played so good. What Violin are you using and how old is it ?

  • @moonlightandlove Thanks... My violin was made by the Italian "Dal Canto" in 1937, I believe.

  • I love how your fingers just flow on the strings like a stream bubbling along - very fluent and smooth. Thank you Kristal and thanks to Ryan for the recording.

  • Outstanding.

  • Beautiful! We are playing a full orchestra compostition of this piece with some solis for the first chairs *flex*. Your vibrato is different than most ive seen on this piece, its very high...frequency :) Most vibrato I see is wider on this piece including mine. What a nice friend you got! Great job hun!

  • dude sounds like a date rapist

  • haha ur such a nerd!!! pretty epic though

  • You're amazing. Keep up the good work!

  • Great boeing.. All the best from Ireland

  • Great boeing.. All the best from Ireland

  • Bravo!

  • You are very good.

my middle school orchestra played this last year.

  • now THAT is COOL!!!

  • I hope I can play like this one day! :) You're amazing!

  • very pretty tune...I had trouble seeing the last phrase of it were you slid down the neck..very nice job

  • Very good job Kristal!

  • Excellent tone and quality of expression. Good job

  • Great job! I think you played this tune very well!

  • what level is this piece

  • Any level, hehe.

The basic melody is very easy, and the ornaments on the common sheet music aren't too hard either, but it can be customized to fit whatever the player wants it to be.

It's probably the best song out there to help players learn improvisation and expression.

  • @ZXZcolbysrightsZXZ it's like a 3

  • Comment removed

  • @FeSo4man I think you need to post a VIDEO REPLY and play it better than her.

  • WOW!!!!GREAT JOB!!! im learnoing how to play that song rite now

  • Yes,you can make your applechian fiddle sing like know other.Keep on fiddleing around.

  • You definitely did not disappoint.

  • That was insanely AWESOME!!!!!!!! It was my dad's favorite song because he watched that whole Civil War series.

  • Excellent! Very tad rushed but absolutely wonderful! Graet tune well played!

  • can you plz post the sheet music? i can't find it!

  • real answer or fake answer?

  • posted video response of my daughter playing this piece - slower /somber - more of a ballad. et me know what you think! Thnx!

  • Don't worry about correcting a thing. You do a fanastic job. If my verson on youtube was half as good as yours I could die happy

  • We're playing this song at my school for a song!

You sounds Soooooo much better than we could ever be!

    Wow, Thats amazinggg!!!

You've got REALLY good tonee! (:

    Good jobb!

  • Very well done! And to the people who keep saying her tempo is to fast... NO.

This song is supposed to be a waltz and her tempo is great.

  • Actually the song is supposed to be a ballad, not a waltz. However, her tempo was fantastic. Good job, Kristal! So many people actually turn this song into a waltz, and it becomes simply too depressing. What's worse is when they rush through, however, as that really affects the beautiful rhythm.

I think the people who are saying Kristal plays it too quickly are thrown off by her playing a few more notes as the bow slides. Really it's the same tempo, and the additional notes are personal touch.

  • Um, no, sorry. The song was recorded as a waltz in D major.

  • Ashoken Farewell was recorded originally as a waltz, played in D major

  • oh wow how do you even get your tone like that :O

  • Not bad, but don't press so hard all the time.

  • Too quick, but still very good. I'm playing this piece at my school and I'm no where near this good. I'd never get the guts to record my violin playing and put it up here. ;~;

  • Good sound, that violin is very clear and outspoken.

  • ahh i am misting up

  • beautiful, simply, that´s my girl. Often wannabe´s want´s to try out the challence of feel in Ashokan Farewelll. But you don´t miss one single stroke with the bow, a single sense of timing or musical empathy. Carry on, soldier...

  • Good overall tone, however, your vibrato should be a little slower for this piece. I would also recommend playing it slower as well, so the audience can fully appreciate the music. Another suggestion is to perhaps remove just a couple of trills, it almost takes away from your beautiful playing. Overall, well done!

  • Also make sure to keep your wrist straight! It keeps misaligning..

  • прекрасный( beautiful)

  • Wow! Incredible! She hits every nuance in the song! Ir;s the best version I have heard yet, and in my business, I have heard some Civil War moaning violins before! Would love to have her play Elisa Jade in my AVENEL THE MOTION PICTURE film!

  • CUEBALLANDRED, you are so right about your comment, I too did not cry when I usually do. 30 years ago, I never would have cried-LIfe Experiences do that to you

  • what violin have u got it sounds really cool!

  • gorgeous playing! your technique, feeling and emotion and very nicely developed. but on a slightly negative note, i wish you had played this piece a bit more straight forward with less ornamentation. but that's just a personal thing and is by no means a reflection of your playing at all.

  • That is one noce sounding violin you have and you play it amazingly well. The tone that you achieve and that smooth bowing got right into my bones - breathtaking. Your timing is excellent but I would like to suggest that you give the double-step (two stings) just another fraction of a beat.

    Please post more.

    Melody

  • Beautiful. I'd been debating learning the violin for a long time and for whatever reason listening to this song made me finally get started. Been playing 2 months now and can play a little bit simplified version of Ashokan Farewell. Thanks so much!

  • Good for you, and good luck!

    *salute*

    Thanks for the lovely comment.

  • great, but a little too much vibrato and trills. But nicely done!!!

  • You play very well. But this is the first time listening to this piece of art that I didn't have a tear in my eye. You play as you have been taught. One day you will play with heart and soul. Something only life (Good and Bad) will teach you.

  • This is a very well done rendition of a beautiful folk song. Nice job. If I may make one small criticism it would be that you use too many ornaments. At some points it distracted from the natural beauty of the melody. Otherwise, terrific!

  • Technical perfection is for machinery. Men are not machines on a production line. Music, like all great poetry, art, prose and other great works of mankind, reaches into our hearts and spirits and changes us for the better for all time to come. Keep playing Krystal. Keep changing the world for the better for all of us.

  • this is supposed to be played with a reading. its sad. for this song the vibrato makes it too bold and in your face. fantastic tone though

  • i agree with ashandblake, a little too much vibrato, but SO beautiful!!!!!! =)

  • i have to play this in 2 days

  • dissapointment is IMPOSSIBLE with YOUR vids

  • this is beautiful!!! : )

  • Pretty amazing! I'm going to be playing this at a ceremony at school, so I think I'm going to try to model my version off of yours. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Beautiful, well done.

  • really beautiful, but maybe a little too much vibrato..or maybe just too strong vibrato..but beautiful!

  • Beautiful... no ifs ands or buts about it. Keep the vibrato stong.

  • like i said..vibrato is too strong for this slow twang song :)

  • Simply amazing.

  • Good on you Kristal.....Good on you.

  • O.M.G. Disappointed? No, dear. Far from it. ...but, words are inadequate. Your music says all that need to be said.

  • muito legal!

  • No miss. No dissapointment.

  • lol, "Real answer, or fake answer?"

  • Kristalkleer....I've heard this played by many great violinists. I even had the opportunity to accompany Jay and Molly (along with Jerry Holland) this great tune on stage.....but I think this is the most beautiful I've ever heard. Kudos to you....lots of emotion.....beautifully done! (Janine Randall/former director of the Ceilidh Trail School of Music in Inverness Cape Breton island.)

  • AGREED

God bless the south and TEXAS *wink wink*

  • Some good and usable critique here--I wish I could play it half as well as you..

  • Played so well my heart broke. What a mournful piece of music, but great.

  • omg, that is amazing, I played Ashokan farewell by ear and it sounded like crap. But you are extremely amazing!!!! Your vabrato,(dont know if i spelled that right) is so pure!! And u use such full long bows!!! My teacher is always getting onto my about how my bows are to short and choppy, and now I understand the difference muh better!! 7,001 stars!

  • One of my favourite tunes, and well played. Thanks!

  • Very good, your vibrato is a bit strong for this song but still very nice

  • Not bad playing at all. Some critique from me would be to work on longer phrases. I feel that you are counted each beat which feels as if every cadence is on every downbeat. Not bad at all, loosen up the bow hand a little though.

  • Excellent playing, the best version I've heard in a while -- just leave the camera in one place, please: I got a little motion sickness there!

  • That was a wonderful version of a beautiful song. I had a lump in my throat!

  • we played the song in orchestra my freshman year in high school...you totally kicked our fitrst violin's ass!

  • ive been looking on the internet for a good version of this song. and you play it beautifully. I first listen to the other version, and im glad you did it in a better quality.

  • if you also look up a violinist called Mairead Nesbitt she has a very nice version of this tune, and has many different solos as well, she is very good too.

  • Isn't she the fiddler for Celtic Women?

  • yes she is, she is really good, in my personal opinion... :)

  • No argument from me there!

  • Very nice--I enjoyed playing harmony along with you--I'm just learning it after about giving up on finding it.

  • sighs ...over your vibrato

  • amazing.

  • I normally don't care for unaccompanied instrumental solos but you were absolutely amazing whit you tone and technique. You made my day when i found this post. thanks for sharing your talent.

    Michael Spray

  • Awesome! I hope I can one day be as good at the violin as you are! I wish you the best of luck!

  • Nicely done, good intonation! You can drive a truck that vibrato!

  • why so many bows....peering into your case

  • I was testing them out before buying a new one. :)

  • How many years have you been playing? Right now, I've been playing guitar for about a year, and can play pretty proficiently, decent knowledge of scales, modes, keys, chord theory. I'd really like to learn the violin (and then eventually save up for a cello). The tone is absolutely beautiful.

  • I've been playing for ten years, but this song does not use the full ten years of technique I've learned.

I highly recommend the violin. I must warn you, however, that it is quite difficult and can be very frustrating at first.

Violin and guitar is a lovely combination because violin can familiarize you with specific pitches and one-melody musicality while guitar will teach you to harmonize.

Out of the five instruments I play, they're my two favorite. ^^

  • Wow! My son is currently working on this for a concert in a couple of weeks, and I thought your perfomance was amazing - have set as a favourite so he can look in the morning.

  • Thank you very much... :)

Good luck to your son with his music.

  • great...really well played, but please buy a tripod !

  • That sounds way better! I thought you wrote a mean book about Ryan.

  • She did... - Ryan

  • Haha... I did. I was just kidding around, though. Ryan's pretty awesome.

  • great job, ive heard this played by a pro. and u nailed it. nice job

  • Yep. MUCH better quality!

    You rock!! I'm your fan!!

    *cheers*

  • Hooray! Very good.

  • o.o good job you should become a violin teacher . how many years have you been playing now?
