I only make suggestions to people who really impress me. Wonderful job. Suggestions: Work out signals with your cameraman so you don't have the awkwardness at the beginning and the end. The gain was too high on the mike, so it overloaded a time or two. That hurts the quality. You rushed the tempo a little in those spots where there was no ornamentation. Keep the count ALWAYS. Wonderful work. In my ever so humble opinion, fixing those nits will make it even more impressive.
can u send me notes please ill b really thankful because we plan on using this for our highschool orchestra:) my email is leo_peters300@yahoo.com thankyou!!!!
hi i was wondering how long it took you to get that, i've been playing for 3 years im young and your so good i listen to this almost every day,.....!!!! keep playing, TNX
Incredibly beautiful! You need to do this one more time with an acoustic guitar accompaniment. Preferably a guitarist that is just as talented as you..
you dig in just the right way and have excellent wide vibrato. this is one of my favorite songs and as a violinist since i was 8 myself i'm quite critical. you played it amazingly!
Gorgeous, by all standards. You have a sassy style of play which is quite nice (will get you no-where classically but you know that!) so ramble on Miss, and kick every one of their asses... every last ONE!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
@mezrabad This was recorded at a small Connecticut boarding high school... I'm pretty sure they're all pretty similar because the ones at my current college are identical as well. :P
I have listened to every version on you tube. Noone is better than you!!. Your tone, vibrato, intonation, clarity of ornamentation, the intensity of phrasing, are outstanding. The violin really sings!! The only thing I would suggest is that you allow yourself even more liberty with the tempo and dynamics, hang on to one of the those phrase-ending notes, then move ahead. They might call it milking it, but it makes it more poignant. The civil war was bloody; let the violin grieve!
I love how your fingers just flow on the strings like a stream bubbling along - very fluent and smooth. Thank you Kristal and thanks to Ryan for the recording.
Beautiful! We are playing a full orchestra compostition of this piece with some solis for the first chairs *flex*. Your vibrato is different than most ive seen on this piece, its very high...frequency :) Most vibrato I see is wider on this piece including mine. What a nice friend you got! Great job hun!
The basic melody is very easy, and the ornaments on the common sheet music aren't too hard either, but it can be customized to fit whatever the player wants it to be.
It's probably the best song out there to help players learn improvisation and expression.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you play to loud. no dynamics. Other than that ok, I really don't like the emphases on the bow strokes you have. I think you would play this GREAT if you tried to use a little diminuendo and crashendo. It really adds to a piece especially a ballad like this.
Actually the song is supposed to be a ballad, not a waltz. However, her tempo was fantastic. Good job, Kristal! So many people actually turn this song into a waltz, and it becomes simply too depressing. What's worse is when they rush through, however, as that really affects the beautiful rhythm.
I think the people who are saying Kristal plays it too quickly are thrown off by her playing a few more notes as the bow slides. Really it's the same tempo, and the additional notes are personal touch.
Too quick, but still very good. I'm playing this piece at my school and I'm no where near this good. I'd never get the guts to record my violin playing and put it up here. ;~;
beautiful, simply, that´s my girl. Often wannabe´s want´s to try out the challence of feel in Ashokan Farewelll. But you don´t miss one single stroke with the bow, a single sense of timing or musical empathy. Carry on, soldier...
Good overall tone, however, your vibrato should be a little slower for this piece. I would also recommend playing it slower as well, so the audience can fully appreciate the music. Another suggestion is to perhaps remove just a couple of trills, it almost takes away from your beautiful playing. Overall, well done!
Wow! Incredible! She hits every nuance in the song! Ir;s the best version I have heard yet, and in my business, I have heard some Civil War moaning violins before! Would love to have her play Elisa Jade in my AVENEL THE MOTION PICTURE film!
CUEBALLANDRED, you are so right about your comment, I too did not cry when I usually do. 30 years ago, I never would have cried-LIfe Experiences do that to you
gorgeous playing! your technique, feeling and emotion and very nicely developed. but on a slightly negative note, i wish you had played this piece a bit more straight forward with less ornamentation. but that's just a personal thing and is by no means a reflection of your playing at all.
That is one noce sounding violin you have and you play it amazingly well. The tone that you achieve and that smooth bowing got right into my bones - breathtaking. Your timing is excellent but I would like to suggest that you give the double-step (two stings) just another fraction of a beat.
Beautiful. I'd been debating learning the violin for a long time and for whatever reason listening to this song made me finally get started. Been playing 2 months now and can play a little bit simplified version of Ashokan Farewell. Thanks so much!
You play very well. But this is the first time listening to this piece of art that I didn't have a tear in my eye. You play as you have been taught. One day you will play with heart and soul. Something only life (Good and Bad) will teach you.
This is a very well done rendition of a beautiful folk song. Nice job. If I may make one small criticism it would be that you use too many ornaments. At some points it distracted from the natural beauty of the melody. Otherwise, terrific!
Technical perfection is for machinery. Men are not machines on a production line. Music, like all great poetry, art, prose and other great works of mankind, reaches into our hearts and spirits and changes us for the better for all time to come. Keep playing Krystal. Keep changing the world for the better for all of us.
Pretty amazing! I'm going to be playing this at a ceremony at school, so I think I'm going to try to model my version off of yours. Thanks for the inspiration!

omg, that is amazing, I played Ashokan farewell by ear and it sounded like crap. But you are extremely amazing!!!! Your vabrato,(dont know if i spelled that right) is so pure!! And u use such full long bows!!! My teacher is always getting onto my about how my bows are to short and choppy, and now I understand the difference muh better!! 7,001 stars!
Not bad playing at all. Some critique from me would be to work on longer phrases. I feel that you are counted each beat which feels as if every cadence is on every downbeat. Not bad at all, loosen up the bow hand a little though.
ive been looking on the internet for a good version of this song. and you play it beautifully. I first listen to the other version, and im glad you did it in a better quality.
if you also look up a violinist called Mairead Nesbitt she has a very nice version of this tune, and has many different solos as well, she is very good too.
I normally don't care for unaccompanied instrumental solos but you were absolutely amazing whit you tone and technique. You made my day when i found this post. thanks for sharing your talent.
How many years have you been playing? Right now, I've been playing guitar for about a year, and can play pretty proficiently, decent knowledge of scales, modes, keys, chord theory. I'd really like to learn the violin (and then eventually save up for a cello). The tone is absolutely beautiful.
I've been playing for ten years, but this song does not use the full ten years of technique I've learned.
I highly recommend the violin. I must warn you, however, that it is quite difficult and can be very frustrating at first.
Violin and guitar is a lovely combination because violin can familiarize you with specific pitches and one-melody musicality while guitar will teach you to harmonize.
Out of the five instruments I play, they're my two favorite. ^^
Wow! My son is currently working on this for a concert in a couple of weeks, and I thought your perfomance was amazing - have set as a favourite so he can look in the morning.
