  • This is so... magical... You have literally changed my life with this video. #__#

  • I can't for the life of me figure out what you are doing. I just can't see clearly how you do this st. I wish I could because it looks like you can purl really fast.

  • Großartig, dank dir kann ich endlich links stricken =)

  • I need a norwegian grandmother. I am not getting this. lol

  • What yarn were you using?

  • Thank you so much for this GREAT video !!! I'm a 49 year old guy who was taught to knit by my mother when I was 10 or 11 years old. She only taught me the regular knit so I just knitted the garter stitch. It was so fun and I remember I knitted quite a few scarves and hats :)

But now, thanks to you, I can do the Norwegian Purl. I'm from Scandinavia so this is the right way to do the purl for me, hehehe... Thank you again ! :o)

  • hey that's really neat. i gotta try that. thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. This is my new favorite way to purl.

  • This is THE BEST way to purl thanks for the video!!! I'm praciticing and CAN DO IT WOW!!

  • I really like this so far, but what do you do if your first stitch is a purl? I've just been doing the first one the other way. How can you use the Danish style purl on the first stitch of a row?

  • This is how I learned it. But I never heart the name Norwegian purl. I am Danish and everywhere I look this is how we do it. I thought it was just the universal way of purl. lol

  • Thank you so much! Someone linked your video into a group on Ravelry and it's been a lifesaver for me. I have been knitting for about 5 years and I have hated purling. This has made my life so much easier.

  • Public service announcement: the norweigan purl DOES NOT WORK if you're trying to double knit!

  • Hello again, I forgot to add that I could not find any other video on youtube that teaches this pattern :( PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!

  • Hello, I am a new knitter and I'm having a hard time reading patterns(the one from your video)...could you PLEASE start from the beginning of this pattern...I just need to see the first 6 or 7 rows...I would greatly appreciate it!!!

  • Thank you for sharing this. Love it. This helps so much when doing the 1x1rib too. :)

  • I like this because I like to whiile commuting on the bus & I always have problems with bumps and losing my place and or splitting the yarn. This is really great. Thanks!

  • I learned to knit about 4 weeks ago. I watched a lot of videos on continental v english methods. I decided to learn continental first and I learned to do purl stitches from your video. I will learn all of the techniques eventually and I think that if one is knitting a full row of purls it would be easier to move the yarn to the front. With a pattern though, this is the way to go.

Thanks for the very, very good video. Great camera work, demonstration and explanation.

  • Wow, once you get the hang of this it makes purling SOOO much easier. I can't thank you enough! I'm a really tight knitter though, so I'm afraid my work will look kind of lopsided until I can loosen up my knit stitch.

  • Thank you so much for sharing! I really wasn't looking forward to learning how to purl continental, but this has made me change my attitude on it. Thanks again!

  • @JadedByEntropy: you should try Portuguese knitting. You'll definitely be a much happier knitter.

  • a minute ago i was an angry thrower....then i was a happy picker....now i'm a norwegian purler xD wow...

  • @huntercalgary Hi Smegma, how is the dog blower doing today? Youtube is loaded with comments about you being a dog blower. You haven't found a small fraction yet. Keep looking so we can hear from you. Then I can have our team respond as usual. I don't waste my time talking to someone I don't know. Instead I have a service do it. What a cum stain loser you are.

  • yay knitting I am a beginner but I love it!

  • Thanks for the video! This is the best way to purl Continental! I was about to give up and just do English knitting forever.

  • I love the Norwegian Purl. Thanks to you.

  • Thanks for this I am dsylexic and the flipping it to the front was very confusing to me ---this is so much easier

  • I remember seeing this video so long ago and thinking "omg that's so kewl!" I don't know why i didn't try it when i saw it. I am this time. It feels sort of awkward at first but i think it's actually really neat. I think the awkwardness has something to do with pulling the needle down through the loop to make the stitch. It's like making purl stitches upside down. Thank you for this though. Purling was making my hands too tense.

    xoxox

  • I . LOVE . YOU! This is awesome. I despise purling, it takes me ages to do ribbing and I have knitted everything in the round just to avoid purling!

Thanks so much for posting this vid. Im going to recommend it to anyone that will listen.

  • I learned to knit in Denmark, and this is exactly how I knit and purl. I see how others knit, looping the yarn around, and this Norwegian way seems to me more efficient, almost like crocheting, in a way. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it.

  • I LOVE YOU HSAILORMOON (and your Farmor/Mormor)!! I have been searching the net for an hour or so trying to work out how my Farmor does it since I can't ask her and it was a long time ago that she taught me ... you have made my live so much easier (^_^) *HUGS*

  • Thank you for telling me there's a name for this method! :) I've always been purling this way, didn't even know other methods existed until recently. All the other methods seem really complicated to me and they must make knitting very slow...

  • Hi thankyou for sharing your purl method. I have only dabbled with continental style knitting as I find the purling to hard! After looking throughout youTube I have found a couple of new techniques but this one seems the best for me. Thankyou again for sharing.

  • Hi this is a brilliant way to purl. I'm new to You Tube so please point out in easy words where the link is for that beautiful scarf. Many thanks.

  • @Hsailormoon

Thanks so much for your reply. I think I'll give this a try on all purl rows to see how it works for me. From your video I can definitely see it is very fast for you. Plus I'm having some issues with my regular continental purling, because I'm somehow getting the stitches too tight while my knit stitches are fine.

  • Hi,

Great illustration of how to do Norwegian purl. I now can so this, and it did't take long to learn.

I hope you check the comments of this video since it is a couple years old, because I have a really important question to ask.

When you're not ribbing or doing seed stitch but basically knitting one row and purling the next, do you still Norwegian purl all across the purl rows? Or do you switch to the "regular" purl with yarn in front?

I can see Norwegian purling as being a really good

  • @soolinj I still check this video, as it is the last video I really posted to youtube.

When I have to do long rows of purls, like the reverse side of stockinette, yeah I will purl by doing the Norwegian Purl. It is faster for me, still.

My fingers get strained in holding the needles/yarn differently (ie having the yarn in the front of the work, vs the back) so I Norwegian Purl for pretty much all my purling needs. :)

  • @soolinj

I am reminded of my Bestemor's beautiful crochet work as I watch your work. I love ti!

  • Thank you, this is so easy!! I had such a hard time with purls before, they took so long moving the yarn from back to front.

  • Grab the audio from this tune at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • i havent been able to figure out how you manage to get it reversible! does it tie in with the continental style that you use, or is it something else?

    help me, please!

  • @Remuda7 The scarf pattern makes it reversible. Click the link in the bottom bar and give the pattern a try, you twist the stitches like a normal cable.

It has nothing to do with my continental style of knitting or purling.

  • I have been wanting to learn how to pearl this way! And, I noticed the yarn in front is like doing a yarn over. This is so much easier than having to bring the yarn in front to do the purl stitch. Thank-you, so much.

  • FINALLY somebody who does the purl stitch the way I do it! I've literally gone through dozens of videos before I came across yours and yay, this is definitely the way to do it if one has to alternate between purls and knits continuously - no excessive wrist movements or awkward needle positions. I'm so happy I was taught this style by my mother back when I was a wee little girl, lol. To me, whether I purl or knit, there is no real difference, both are just as comfy and easy...

  • thank you for sharing this vid!

  • God bless you and your Danish grandmother! I don't even know now how I stumbled onto your video when I was searching for other things, but I believe you not only have helped in making my first hat easier, you may have kept me from lighting a moss-stitch shawl on fire. ;). ( joking about the fire part, of course). Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • Great video, thanks!

  • wow, gorgeous! I was wondering if you could write up the pattern, I'd really appreciate it :) tnx

  • WOWWWWWW I CAN DO THIS!! i'm a continental knitter and i've been searching for an easier way to purl. Thanks for uploadin this vid and for explaining it very very clearly!!

  • I love this! I am a thrower trying to learn continental and I am finding purling this way SO much easier! Thanks so much for your video!

  • Very clear instructions to follow, and I caught on straight away. The Norwegian purl seems a far better way to do Continental purl, - the knitting flows smoothly. I used to knit the English way, but have just taught myself Continental knitting. It is fun and after a bit of practise, is easier too.

  • I thought this video was very clear and informative. I got out a project I was working on (a seed stitch scarf) and practiced the Norwegian purl on my scarf while watching your demo video. I love the idea of the Norwegian purl and l look forward to practicing it.

I also love the scarf pattern you used and looked it up for a future project.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • hello..how did you do your cable stitch..?

  • I knit continental as well and when I purl I put in in front, but I kind of found a really easy way to purl without having to stop and move every thing with both hands.. I dunno. I did a huge practice piece with cheap yarn and in it I did basketweave, so I guess all that repetition let me find a way that worked well for my hands.

  • this is a beautiful scarf, and i went to your site for the pattern. my question to you is how do you do the cables without a cable needle?

  • Thanks, this was very helpful.

  • This is exactly how a Finnish woman taught me to purl over 25 years ago!

  • That scarf looks amazing! I am definitely going to try this technique. Thanks.

  • Me again... i have a question - at one point you say you can wrap either way (or pick up either way?) but doenst it make a difference which way you wrap? I know that one way is eastern and one way is western, so i am confused that you say it can be either way.

Thanks again!!! I actually bought some Vanna Olive cuz i love it so much in your video. :o)

  • @j8nnyl You know what, you are absolutely right. I didn't realize that till you mentioned it, that I said that. I was actually quite nervous in the beginning of the video, where I can slightly hear my voice shake. lol

You are right, (I just had to pick up my knitting to figure it out), You want to wrap the yarn, by moving the needle clockwise around the working yarn.

    Thank you.

  • @Hsailormoon

Thanks!! i actually think of it as "if i were to pretned to stab myself in the eye with my needle, and wrap the yarn around, it woul dbe COuNTER clockwise around the needle, LOL, so i was nervous again that i was doing it wrong!! but ya, your note means the exact same thing,, spinning your NEEDLE clockwise = a counter clockwise wrap... PHEW, i am doin ok, LOL Going from eastern to western knitting was really confusing for me (different wrap is key) Thanks again!!

  • Thanks, I put a correction to the video. :D

  • I am sure i commented before, but i just have to say again, thank you, this is an awesome video. As a gir I started out eastern european style knitting, (continental of course) and then switched to western continental,. W.C. Purling is So SLOW!! so i LOVE doing the norw. purl, which i learned mostly from your vid. I stopped back just to be sure i was doing it OK :o)

i know i need to do the tug, my purls are so loose! and my knits are so tight - i need to work on that

    Anyway, THANKS so much!

  • interesting. amazing. i may have to force myself to knit continental so i can benefit from this nifty technique!! plus my husband is norwegian so anything i can do to honour that is exciting. :D

  • Thank you so much!!!! This is so much quicker than purling continental style. :)

  • Thank you so much

  • Thank You - Takk! =D Now I will survive the k1 p1 ribbing on the bottom of my jumper.

  • This is so awsome. Makes hand knitting so much easier if you have stiffer fingers from arthritis. Thank you again for clearly showing this technique.

  • This is so good! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • Thank you!! Very helpful...

  • Awesome and very easy to understand! I'm a new knitter, who knits continental. And, I tell ya, doing a k2 p2 ribbing is a royal pain in the butt. This will make it so much easier! Thanks!

  • I am new to knitting and the lady at the yarn store showed me how to do this but I forgot. I searched you tube until I found you. Thank You soooo much.

  • Magic - how you can make it, that the

pattern on front and back look the same?

  • Thanks! So much faster than my regular style of purling!

  • Hello. I was wondering if purling this way can work for people that knit english style?

  • Fantastic video, thanks!!! I have been able to do this purl, from your instruction, however i am working on a raspberry stitch pattern, where I must k,p,k into 1 stitch. i cant seem to accomoplish this with the norwegian purl! Have you? In any case, thanks so much for sharing your technique!.

  • What's the name of the scarf pattern again?

  • Thanks...I was taught to knit in Ringebu Norway. This bring back such great memories

  • This is a awesome video, everyone needs to sub you :D

  • This scarf is GORGEOUS! I love the green color and pattern! Do you happen to remember what yarn you used for the project?

  • Thank you, good point. I forgot to put up the info of the yarn!

I used Size US 8 needles, and about 2 skeins of Vanna's Choice Yarn, color way Olive. Bought at Micheals Craft Store. Wonderful Acrylic Yarn that feels soft and machine washable. I love this yarn and have used it quite often since I found out about it.

  • thanks so much! i am a left handed knitter and this has helped me immeasurably. other videos on this subject were hard to follow but now i've got it! thanks!

  • Norwegian purl is what I was taught at school. It's much easier to knit and purl the yarn back! I have not learn very well to purl in continental way... I why should I? It's fun to try different techniques.

I'm a Finn so it could be called the "Finnish purl" or maybe Scandinavian. Thank you for the video!

  • It would be nice to see this in slow motion if you could........thanks!

  • Thank you so much! This was so incredibly helpful! I've been trying to find a way to purl that would work for me and this is perfect!

  • FANTASTIC,

    Thank you..

    This saved my wrist.

Could you please make a video with a Purl in front and back

    Thank You

  • thank you for that! made my knitting life SO much easier!

  • YAY! My mom taught me this technique as well - just before she passed away - I wasn't sure I'd got it right, so I've been looking everywhere to find the technique - but it's not english, not continental, so I was just lost!

PERFECT - thanks a million - and btw - I'm Danish as well - maybe we should rename it the Danish Purl *lol*

  • Fantastic purling...!!! I've just started contintnental and it's soooo much easier on the wrists. Much quicker too. But, can you do another video of how you do your cables? My way feels awkward but don't know any other way of doing it (inherited from English knitting). You are a star!!! thanks again.

  • neat! I taught myself continental knitting via YouTube and have been doing a "standard" continental purl and a "combination" purl. Yours looks like the best though! I'm off to practice :)

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I am an English knitter but have been trying to learn to knit continental style so that I can do some fair isle and/or corrugated rib with one colour in each hand but I COULD NOT manage to purl continental style - and now I can!

    THANK YOU AGAIN!

  • You are just wonderful! Thank you SO much for this video!

  • Yes, yes, YES! I knew there had to be a way to purl without bringing the yarn forward, but I just didn't know how. But now I do! You rock.

  • I have been curious about that purling method. I think I'll stick with the one that I have been using because I can do it the same speed. It might come in handy for seed stitch though :)

  • Thank you for demonstrating this Norwegian purl! I have always purled this way, being taught by my Norwegian mother, but when I picked up knitting recently again after my mother passed away, I thought I had been doing it wrong because I saw everbody bring their yarn to the front to purl. I thought maybe I forgot how and I was sad because I no longer had my mother to show me the way again. Thanks! I feel my mother's loss a little less now:)

  • Your explanation was wonderful and the image and speed at which you demonstrated this technique was great for someone trying to learn!! thank you so much.

  • Ah, thank you so much! Why have I never heard of this before, haha. New way to purl + a scarf pattern that I have to check out now = awesome knitting video. Great work!

  • OMG! I LOVE this video. You did such a good job of explaining/demo'ing the stitch. I have been struggling with the purl stitch: I think you may have saved me!!!

  • I never comment on videos but this... this.. well you've changed my knitting life!

  • I LOVE YOU!!!!!

  • This is a wonderfully helpful video. When you have time could you show how you purl through the back and how you P2tog.

  • This is really great to know! Thanks for sharing with all of us. :)

  • Thanks for this great video. And what a beautiful cat!

  • Holy frak!! This is a MUCH easier way to purl! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  • Love your Norwegian knitting video. I've always knitted w/ the yarn in my right hand changing the yarn from front to back depending on the stitch. I went and practiced & I love it! I can't believe how much easier it is to knit without having to constantly move the yarn. My question to you is this-how can I learn more about norwegian knitting style for all the different stitches? Is there a book you could recommend on norwegian or contenential knitting?

  • This is SO COOL. Thank you for posting. (:

  • Wow! Thanks SO much!!!~C

  • This method is awesome! I recently started knitting (after 35 years of being only a crocheter) and I have found out that the Continental style works better for me. However I had trouble purling until I watched your video!! The method you show is so easy that I don't mind purling now... Thanks!

  • Thank you the video. Is it possible to post the pattern of the scarf. It is so neat that the cables look good on both sides.

  • Thank you for this posting! I finally found the way to purl without twisting the knit stitch which have been driving me up the wall!!

  • Great job Heather, you are a natural teacher.

    Love Aunt Karen

  • Thanks for posting this video! This will make my purling so much faster!

  • Hello! This is awesome! It looks easy but I'm just wondering where does the yarn appears, from the left of the needle or the right? thanks :)

  • Where does the yarn appear?

I am not sure I understand the question.

The yarn is held by my left hand and is connected on the knitted fabric on the right (as it normally would be for all knitting, except when things are knitted 'backwards')

Where the yarn (ball) is at, doesn't matter what side.

When you knit continental, the working yarn is connected to the right needle and held/stretched across to the left hand (needle) to work with easier.

    Hopefully that makes sense.
