I think it is the poor tape quality. The live recording she did in 1988 (I think) was FANTASTIC

Wow, this is my FIRST TIME EVER seeing Jessye screw up! On an Ab, no less! Well, she sang a nice G instead... (2:26-2:30!!!) Still, everything else is the usual perfection.

I remember this performance, I think it was
anniversary to Levine's work and every possible
known singer took part for hours in a row..I was
still student in NY; of all that lengthy marathon
, this Berlioz really stood out. so great having
this clip available - can't imagine better Damour l'ardente;
the way she gives meaning to every note, and these awesome lines ...
