Van Basten stopped playing when he was 27. Normally a player is on his peak then. He was already struggling with an injury for years. I have read stories that coaches in the Seri A instructed defenders to just take him down, at the cost of a red card. Nowadays that is impossible.....

for people who discuss who is better between V. Basten and R9 Ronaldo, I can say without doubt that they are the 2 best strikers of all time. if you want I can say also the 4 best mid-fielder... Zico - Matthaus - Zidane - Cruijff .
Zico & Matthaus were wonderful players, outstanding... but for me the best midfielders of all time are Maradona, Cruyff & Zidane... all 3 would make my all time 11 & I would put Pele up front with Van Basten before Ronaldo who for me was a bit too greedy & not as complete as MVB or Pele.

Marco was simply unique in his role. I saw many great players after him - Ronaldo (the Brasilian one), for instance - and some were truly amazing to watch, but I have yet to see another striker so lethal and yet so elegant.

@hemulinkulli - Sorry I was using my wife's account by mistake. Ronaldo was amazing, and in his first year at Inter - before his massive injuries - it was staggering to watch him play (you could still see his class when he came to play to AC Milan later on, though most of it was sadly gone).
But Ronaldo was playing in a different position. He used to sprint from a farther distance than Marco and his pace and control were different. And to me Marco was more elegant.

When you try to stop someone that has it all - headers, left foot almost as good as the right, pace, dribbling, vision, position, long distance strikes and so forth - very seldom you manage it.

Ronaldo (R9) was a total player in his prime. Marco was a total CF (left, right, head, acrobatic shots)...so Ronnie was a bit better, you know.

for people who discuss who is better between V. Basten and R9 Ronaldo, I can say without doubt that they are the 2 best strikers of all time. if you want I can say also the 4 best mid-fielder... Zico - Matthaus - Zidane - Cruijff .

Zico & Matthaus were wonderful players, outstanding... but for me the best midfielders of all time are Maradona, Cruyff & Zidane... all 3 would make my all time 11 & I would put Pele up front with Van Basten before Ronaldo who for me was a bit too greedy & not as complete as MVB or Pele.

In many words: One of the underrated players in the history. Without his injury, could have reach better place in history.
Many of his goals are great, but his goal in 1988 in Europe Championship against USSR is the best.

@sbh123yt My memory works more than well my friend, having been at the San Siro for years just to watch him play (I grew up in Milan). Let me point out that never in my life I saw such class and power wrapped on a 'pure' striker.
Marco was simply unique in his role. I saw many great players after him - Ronaldo (the Brasilian one), for instance - and some were truly amazing to watch, but I have yet to see another striker so lethal and yet so elegant.
Defenders were literally terrified by him.

@louisenumbr1 I think it's a fucking digrace when old romantics say player like Van Basten is better than R9..Ronaldo Luis was pure art the things he did are unmatched for a striker..i saw every striker there is threw dvd collections and no one comes close to R9 in his prime..if we are talking about in clinical finishing and skill!!

@hemulinkulli - Sorry I was using my wife's account by mistake. Ronaldo was amazing, and in his first year at Inter - before his massive injuries - it was staggering to watch him play (you could still see his class when he came to play to AC Milan later on, though most of it was sadly gone).
But Ronaldo was playing in a different position. He used to sprint from a farther distance than Marco and his pace and control were different. And to me Marco was more elegant.

@maurem You really do seem to know your football, mate: My Braz. mates tell me that the main difference between the positions/central forward roles that MVB & "R9" played was because Ronaldo was a "Brazilian"-mould centre-forward while Van Basten was clearly a positional "descendant" of the "W-M"-mould No.9. I can try & explain the difference if you're not entirely following me...

@TheLegendfamily I believe your Brazilian friends are right. And many of the goals they scored (along with the goals they made other players scored) came from that 'fear' they used to deliver to opposition's defenses. Even the most organised teams went all over the place trying to stop them.
When you try to stop someone that has it all - headers, left foot almost as good as the right, pace, dribbling, vision, position, long distance strikes and so forth - very seldom you manage it.

@TheLegendfamily - Sorry I'd used my wife's account by mistake (louisenumbr1) - but by "pure striker" I mean that he used to play as finisher. He could of course sometimes withdraw a bit and play more like a forward (mostly when he was marked obsessively by players such as Vierchowod) and still be very dangerous.

@Tabish29 I agree with you, it's a shame that players like Cruijff and Kluivert are gone. But you can't stick with that older player forever. Now they have players like Eljero Elia and Ibrahim Affelay.
And yes, they probably won't get a legend like Van Basten or Cruijff again, but we have to do it with what we have

@gallan30 SOrry once again mate. I was cursing at my TV when RObben missed his best 2 chances. The Dutch resorted to bad play. Don't take my word for it. See what Cruyff has said. Sad. The irony is that this team is not better than the teams of past decades yet they actually made it to the final. At this point I don't think they will win a world cup in my lifetime. The only thing positive is that Spain are at least first time winners.
