  • Ok u gota concentrate on getting those punches right before you start trying to put in speed and power. Just focus on specific techniques and make sure each punch comes straight back to your guard. Don't drop em down to your hips. If you're from a karate or kung fu background i understand. been there myself. but guard is very important. make it look snappy not sloppy. keep it up (hips)

  • OK LISTEN UP, the best way to improve your punches when hittin the bag is to just stand there in your stance and practice one specific punch example, jab, cross, hooks, etc. Just hit the bag with that one punch concentrating on your technique, not speed or power, that will come with time.

  • Oh, and I forgot to mention that when you throw your elbows, keep the non-elbowing hand up on-guard.

  • Of course you know to pivot on the balls of your feet(you could have a bad day if you tried to face forward with your supporting leg while you executed a violent round kick).

    Punching and kicking puts great demands on joints what with all the snapping and torquing not to mention shock from hi-impacts. Warming up, joint flexibility, and joint strength are very important.

    Push off and snap your hips ccw, sling your upperbody around(with hands up)as if you're trying to face that frig but keep your eye on your target, bring your knee straight up as high as your intended target and turn your lower leg in at the last moment. All this with the intent on slicing through the bag not just stinging it just below the surface. This is Muay Thai's way. Of course there are other ways of kicking.

  • On your round kick, first don't drop your hands. You do this right before you kick-EVERYTIME. You CAN snap your hips, turn your head and shoulders WITH YOUR HANDS UP. Also, don't focus your kick 1 or 2 inches into the bag. Instead, focus your kick THROUGH the bag(2 or 3 feet PAST the opposite side). This kind of imaging makes for a FAR more powerful kick. Now you know why Thai boxers spin in circles when they shadow kickbox.

  • Also, AFTER you hit the bag, come straight back with your hand. DON'T DROP YOUR HAND ON THE WAY BACK! That's the easiest way to get knocked out by a counter punching opponent. When you become dead tired, force yourself to keep your hands up. You should never begin the habit of dropping your hands. Now you know why boxers tend to have developed delts-HA.

  • Also, I would add, learn to punch straight instead of circular swating. From on-guard, extend your lead hand STRAIGHT OUT to the bag at NOSE level not chest level(turning your shoulders) and keep your other hand by your face/chin(elbow down).Same thing with the rear hand punch. Straight out at nose level(turning shoulderS) with no telegraphing(i.e.,dropping hand, pulling hand back).

  • Dude, everytime you punch with your left you drop your right down by your side. STOP DOING THAT!

    Imagine that you have a long bar running through your body from shoulder to shoulder. Now, when you punch, turn your shoulders as if you're trying to touch the target with the tips of the bar.
