Lopes trained for this race brilliantly, running in double sweats in Lisbon.  He was ready for the heat in LA and it showed. On a side note, his career as a runner began in his teens, in the 200 meters.

Talvez o momento mais extraordinario do desporto português. O impacto desta vitoria foi enorme em Portugal e fez levantar a moral de um pais saido ha pouco de uma longa ditadura. Continua a ser a maratona olimpica mais dificil de sempre em termos climatéricos e eu tive o orgulho de ver em directo este momento unico.
