Going to need one of these for every nuclear reactor in the world eventually. Because they are all going to grow old and get shut down and slowly decay. So much for supposed cheap energy for nuclear power .
why don't they fill the whole thing with lead or concrete? The structure if failing, so why don't you just pour gallons of solid led or concrete into it? this would bury the contanimated fuel forever. We can't have that dust leave the sarcophagus or another radiation cloud could form.
a 1.1billion dollar project seems crazy. The conditions are too untable to do without even higher cost to the workers. Just fill the thing up and then no gass can leak out..
@145bobby 1. There's still a reaction going on in the 4 reactor under all that rumble. Led and concrete were already poured there at the time of the explosion, and the result was all that led and concrete simply evaporating because of a very high temp.
2. Led and concrete are heavy, and there are special tunnels under the 4 reactor that keep the reactor with no contact with any water, or else if those particles with high temperature touch water, whole thing goes BOOM again.
the original idea was that the worker has a ver small chance off getting mutated because it should have been a pre made model made of stainless-steel taht they would essemble on the spot one problem is that its harder for Russia to acomplish this now because money ofcours always and its cant be done like in the U.S.S.R far more bureaucratie and otehr things...
administration hopes completion of the facility's New Safe Confinement structure will occur in 2013. which is being designed to be functional for at least 100 years. Thus, the Chernobyl Plant administration is not prepared to necessarily accept the cheapest system available. The cost of the NSC object is currently estimated at 1.6 billion euros, over twice the original estimate of 758 million euros. the possibility that the final construction cost will be higher.
I believe I read on the page linked on the description that "Project term of the new construction is one hundred years. "
Does that mean it will take 100 years to build, or they're expecting it last for another 100 years once completed? Just curious. Seems like the later, to me.
i never understod the plan but now i see what they mean about shutting donw radioation by putting ''a garadge '' over it very very interesting material thank you. it sure not a good idea to walk in to that garadge =P many radiation eh?
It's an awesome design and a very good one too ... but it will take many years before something like that will ever "come to life" ... and on a side-funny-stalker-like-note : maybe the workers will stumble upon some mutants while working :P
Anyway , thanks for sharing the video , really interesting material ! 5*****
@WarlordHocaghe Dont worry human kind have plenty of time to build that because Chernobyl will be radioactive for 20,000 years :-). That also explains why would they want to build a better confinement.

why are they using the old outside walls of the building? i would think that they would build solid wall all the way around the reactor.

but the original sarcophagus looked so much cooler! D:

@145bobby we can't do it because the reactor's fuel still is producing much heat.

@uorder Good lord! Still producing heat!!!

when is this being built? It would certainly be better than the current sarcophagus.

Courageous plan I think. Imagine the size of this structure, really huge. Good material mate.
