10 plus years ago, there was a 7 point something earthquake that hit central taiwan, since then, almost every new and old building needs to examined in order to survive during big earthquakes... (funny thing is hundred years old buildings can maintain well from that earthquake but not 10 year old building..) Turkey, as I remember, was persistently hitting by big earthquakes... If's wiser to stay away from trees, posts, billboards and even tall buildings (basically anything that could fall on you) during earthquakes.

To this day, I've never ran into the streets screaming and running....nor have I seen anyone else in my community do it either. Maybe quakes are more of a norm in SoCal than in Turkey though, and they're not used to them.
