I have one also , you can drive them on manuel way or automatic way or steptronic way or sport way their really amazing, the acceleration is fantastic i think The E38 is just one of a kind BIMMER among all the generations.
Well I owned a 2000 740iL about up until 3 years ago and all in all......I freakin' miss it terribly! It drove like no other car I've ever driven....that includes Mercedes and Audi. It looked sexy as hell and cruised the highways at 80-90 like you were on a cloud! No noises, squeaks or leaks of any kind. Powerful 4.4l engine that begged to be pushed. Comfortable ride too!
Now for the mechanical end of this reply: The upkeep will kick you in the who-whos ona regular basis.
They just don't make these BMWs as sleek as they used to. I don't really like the new ones so much, but between 1990 and like 2001, BMW were fucking sexy.
So you wouldnt suggest the 7 series ? i test drove 740i 2008 for two days but it had so many electronic problem from tire pressure to engine , and it had just been into a BMW dealer ... i love the looks and everything but the computer problems , i dunno
@alexUA1385 Well, I could answer this question for you. If you are going to buy one then you could but personally I wouldn't because just observing my parents with two older 7 series BMW's I have noticed that the reason why some bimmers could be called luxury is because of the maintenance. Well my dad owns a 2001 740il BMW and I think it would be a pain to maintain one reason being is because my dad brings his BMW to the shop nearly every month and spending about 500 to 2000 dollars on parts. A
see friends everyone talks about the relaibility come on!!! just think that in 2008 after 7 years and over 100k milage the car is just like new. isn't it enough to assure you its relaibility. But the parts are expensive, the resale isnt very pleasing but depends if you find a lover of this car.
@AVIONICMohmand You're right about these cars lasting forever with the proper maintenance. They are high-maintenance and expensive to repair, but that's just the price you pay for the level of performance you get. Expensive, complex parts are the reason why BMWs outperform all other luxury sedans. There is no free lunch.
I love this car, i like every single part in this car, and i want to buy it, but almost every person i ask about it, says not to... Because of how parts are expensive for it, and how unreliable it is etc. So what do you suggest, buy a car u don't really like, but is newer, and has minimum problems, or buy something you really love. I am not a rich person. This will be my first car to, if i will buy it that is.
If you really like it than you won't mid the expenses, I think it's worth it im driving the v12 version of this car and it drives very well a new v12 7 series might drive a bit better but costs like 30 times more and they are turbocharged which could be less reliable in the future so even if I have to fix a few things it's still a bargin. Plus its cool keeping the old german designed bmw's going.
@Cobrass2 they say that if you can't afford it new, then you can't afford it used. I know how you feel and I want an E38 or E39 too. But 5-figure repairs in the span of a year can and will be a reality with these. I wouldn't buy one unless I was, probably by the standards of most, rich. I'd certainly avoid one as my first car.
@jaymum23 Who's they? Haven't heard that one before. You don't have to be rich. I bought an E39 that cost over £30,000 brand new - I paid £3.5k; that's affordable luxury. The running costs aren't bad either; only slightly more expensive than a Ford I used to drive. Maintenance is the key - better to spend a couple hundred a year on oil and fluid changes than thousands on a new engine or gearbox. Main expense here in the UK is the petrol - £80 ($125) a tank is pricey!
@SuperSportsCars I would never question your experience with these cars. I honestly think that they last longer in Europe because people are less ignorant to maintenance, and *most importantly* the fuel quality is much higher. We get all this low-octane, ethanol-laced garbage here. It's so bad that I think it's what has caused the 335i and 535i fuel pump failures. I recall it also caused issues with the old nickasil V8s. @edthetallguy - Coming from me who's owned 2-3 7-Series, his comment makes absolute stupid sense. What a moron. His looks like shit anyways. All pointless and oiled up to make the car look better but runs like shit. 7-Series needs maintenance but is a great reliable car. I spent 1500 in a year on up keep. Thats it. Compare that to other cars, let me know how it compares. I average 19-27 mpg too.. Mines the iL also! Who gets a i without getting a sport. Sad, looks like shit!
@edthetallguy Mechanical issues are very common as you hit the 70k-80k range. Various suspension parts, cooling system (ac and radiator systems). Those alone might force you to trade it in for a Toyota Camry but nothing and I mean nothing will compare to a super sexy looking and running 740iL.
My wife loved the hell out of this car. She is a whopping 4ft11in tall and hated big cars but she loved driving this one. She felt that it didn't feel overwhelming just felt like a safe vehicle!!!
@edthetallguy - How about here it from an enthusiast not a dumb ass. BMW 7-Series most unreliable.. Prove it, show me your facts. Posted is a retard.. Big time!
People say that they have owned the old style 7 series(2001 and down) and the new style(2002 and up) and they say the old style is built better and all around better car. What do you guys think?
Unlike the US, In Europe, they still have 730i, 730d, 735i, 740d, and 740i as engine options. The US only received the 750 and 760 variants in 2007. :-)
does the "hotels" thing work for a 2002 745i? and how do you record your own things like you recorded David Jacobson, but I want to record features not telephone book names.
Yes. The 2002 has it as well. Depending on what software is loaded, you should be able to select Navigation and go to "Information" from there you will be able to select various attractions such as restaurants, hotels, fuel, BMW dealerships, etc.
Without question the finest car I ever owned. Unfortunately, they do break down from time to time and they are EXTREMELY expensive to fix. Still, if you can get into one cheap enough, they are the BEST. Sad to see this one go, but I'm sure you enjoyed every minute of it.
They do break down. Have exact same car and features. Lost two valves in my engine because of a bad cam seal. Cost effective option was to replace the engine because cylinder liners had scoring.
As over-engineered this car is, once you drive it.... everything else feels like a cheap tin can afterwards.
I agree. It is truly a beautiful piece of engineering. I blame the unreliability on the use of plastics and other unreliable lightweight components used to enhance performance and maintain a 50/50 weight distribution. Plus, the computers and electronics were way ahead of their time. They were designed in the early 1990's which was quite an accomplishment.
yup, my friend has a 95' 740il, it's so high-tech, tells him everything how long till he gets to a certain place, parking censors, miles to the gallon, many other nice features, it's probably one of the best "bang for the buck" you can get. Also nice Apple reference in the call, haha =P. Love you rims you my good sir have very good taste in your vehicles.

I wish you guys would get your facts straight:)
its expensive to maintain, because it keeps breaking down, there is a difference, and a car that keeps breaking down,is a bad car, it really is as simple as that
now the lexus ls400:), thats a great car, that never breaks down, and drives better
wake up guys and smell the coffee, your only fooling yourselfs
You have obviously never owned a BMW because if you had, you would know that if you keep up with the maintainance on a BMW, it will never break down and will last well over 250,000 miles.
i love this year and model because it looks so clean and presidential lol, its shape reminds me of the early 90's especially i even like it when its stock black because it has the perfect balance of chrome! its a beautiful thing! i want to get one of these as my first car or maybe a 2003 M3 (im into fixing tuners up)

Big time!

Okay, when did these first come out? Was it 2001?
Or a bit before?
BoxFreshNikes 2 years ago
The E38 was released for the 1995 model year in the US and 1994 in Europe

One of my favorite bmw's of all time. Wish i had the money, to own one!
ziperelli 2 years ago
is it expnsive to maintain because the parts are expensive or the labor
blakep2 2 years ago
Parts are not very expensive. The labor is from the BMW dealerships that try and take advantage of BMW owners.
mw717 2 years ago
where did you get the gps system or was it pre installed, also could you get it for a 1999, or 2000
blakep2 2 years ago
The GPS system is factory installed. It was standard for MY 2001, and optional since 1998.

I've got a 735i, and a 2007 740i... I like this car! It's beautiful
dmob85 2 years ago
there is no 2007 740i
NorthStarOlds 2 years ago 3
Unlike the US, In Europe, they still have 730i, 730d, 735i, 740d, and 740i as engine options. The US only received the 750 and 760 variants in 2007. :-)

oh my mistake
NorthStarOlds 2 years ago
does the "hotels" thing work for a 2002 745i? and how do you record your own things like you recorded David Jacobson, but I want to record features not telephone book names.
Defensed 2 years ago

A UFO on wheels.

I agree. It is truly a beautiful piece of engineering. I blame the unreliability on the use of plastics and other unreliable lightweight components used to enhance performance and maintain a 50/50 weight distribution. Plus, the computers and electronics were way ahead of their time. They were designed in the early 1990's which was quite an accomplishment.

you must miss your bmw 740i, what car do you drive now?
BigSmokePolitics 2 years ago
I have a 3 series convertible now. It's a very fun car!
mw717 2 years ago
yup, my friend has a 95' 740il, it's so high-tech, tells him everything how long till he gets to a certain place, parking censors, miles to the gallon, many other nice features, it's probably one of the best "bang for the buck" you can get. Also nice Apple reference in the call, haha =P. Love you rims you my good sir have very good taste in your vehicles.

I wish you guys would get your facts straight:)
its expensive to maintain, because it keeps breaking down, there is a difference, and a car that keeps breaking down,is a bad car, it really is as simple as that
now the lexus ls400:), thats a great car, that never breaks down, and drives better
wake up guys and smell the coffee, your only fooling yourselfs
benny2rats 3 years ago
You have obviously never owned a BMW because if you had, you would know that if you keep up with the maintainance on a BMW, it will never break down and will last well over 250,000 miles.
Get your facts straight
