WREG should do something with what they have now. The graphics stink and the news set needs an overhaul, terribly. Not to mention Channels 5 and 13 are now in HD; it is unlike Channel 3 to be at the top of the game.
@TV5Alive Yeah, their set and graphics are coming up on ten years now. They tweaked the graphics a few times, but they have stayed about the same. I guess they are planning a total overhaul with HD.
The set is over ten years, more like coming up on 12 years. Since the station is at the top of the ratings, this would be a great time to do a makeover.
@TV5Alive And yes, it would be a great time for a makeover. Now that WMC has Andy Wise, the consumer stories are a bit alarmist, and the weather team's forecasts aren't that great. WREG bests them in those respects, I believe. No HD is holding me back from WREG's newscast.
@wakka922201 WMC TV 5 is not at all like it used to be, partly because of what former GM Bill Applegate and news director Peggy Phillip instituted concerning the station's branding. Add to the previous NBC's decline in quality programming and Raycom's cheap, independent station packaging.
@wakka922201 Unless station management recieve the okay from corporate to makes some drastic changes at TV5, like switching affiliation or finding alternative programing during syndication down time, TV5 will finish last place.
NewsChannel 3's real competion is FOX 13 WHBQ. News 3 is not in a hurry to rework its presentation (even though it desperately needs to) because the higher ups at the station know that the quality is in the reporting and delivery of the news.
@wakka922201 Addition observation of factors that influence WREG's inertia to modernize: the CBS Network's strong ratings and the fact that Memphis isn't a progressive city. Memphis is a traditional region - slow to change.
That's Charlie Van Dyke announcing!

I miss this open so much. I loved living in the Mid-South (eastern Arkansas) in the 80s and early 90s.

@TV5Alive According to the Memphis thread on AVS Forum, WREG may be prepping a HD newscast for 2010. Just speculation.
