  • Green Day should not have been there... Unless it was just Billie Joe in character as St. Jimmy. That said, American Idiot should have gotten the Tony that year... Memphis had good music, but that's ALL that can be said for that show.

  • For everyone complaining about Green Day, A) their music made some gorgeous transitions, as 21 Guns proves B) If pop stars/rock stars on the Tonys are so awful, why did Poison perform the year before this? Just accept that Broadway is broadening its sound and is appealing to more people.

  • Is it just me, or did Miss Cheno get taller?

  • although Green Day aren't really suited to the Tony Awards you gotta admit that his entrance at 8:48 is pretty epic... non?

  • can't get enough Cage aux Folles!

  • Hey, it could be worse. Bieber could be there instead. At least Green Day is a successful and legit band.

  • MEMPHIS! :D

  • 3:49 - 3:51 the bald guy; the thing he does, i can't remember what it is called... is there a legit name for it or what?

  • Ok I'll watch just ONE more Tony Award's opening, and then I'll do my homework...

  • What about the fact that at the begining of Electricity, Elton John's mike was off and during the begining of the Luck Be A Lady/Tonight mashup you could hear warm-ups in the background? I'm saying the production of this opening number was much better. Plus, despite my love for N2N and Pal Joey, those musicals together kind of makes me cringe.

Plus, my hate of Rock of Ages means I tend to skip that part, just like I skip Fela! on this on

  • @lmw7987 oh yeah, that awesome opening where the mikes where off at the beginning, they had mikes on while people rehearsed and there were sets falling on people.... there's nothing wrong with this opening, besides that fela is yucky...

  • @sophiaessig Brett Michaels hitting his face on a set piece was A) his own dumb fault, and B) hi-fucking-larious.

  • oh 2010 tonys opening, what happened after the amazing 2009 opening.

  • Yeah ok the only thing good about that opening was Kristin Chenoweth and John Galagher Jr.

  • lots of audio problems!

  • i'm just sorry that isay a little prayer wasnt sung by girls from glee but this is amazing too :D

  • omg is that sherrie renee scott? lol i luv here i didnt know she was in something new

  • The opening number to the 2009 tony awards was so much better!!

  • honestly, was ready to say something along the lines with "Green Day does not belong to Tony Awards" (and they shouldn't really)... but God, they are still so good live and the AI cast set the mood right... I must say good performance among the mediocre broadway shows. Wasn't broadway best years.

But Neil Patrick Harris, on the other hand...

  • John Gallagher jr. is amazing !

  • Eurgh... jukebox musicals blow.

  • That had NOTHING on the year before. . .

  • Sean Hayes THE BEST! *___*

  • come fly away dancing was ridiculously sloppy!

  • John Gallagher Jr <3

  • i saw memphis, it deservied that tony! love every second!

  • Aaaughh... Kristin has had some serious work done... doesn't look good.

  • La Cage and Million Dollar Quartet are fantastic shows. I would love to go see almost all of these. I still don't understand why Fela! won best choreography...

  • @uberhorse753 It won best choreography because It's not all jazz hands, cheesy tap numbers and things that we've seen on Broadway too many times to count.

  • @Snicki78 where have you been that is half of what broadway is fyi! Fela! was so stupid and so was green day! this is a horrible season. probobly cuz sutton foster and patti lupone were missing! The only show that i would have wanted to have seen was promises, promises and maybe La Cage

  • WTF was Fela? That cannot be serious.

  • Green Day needs to get off Broadway,

  • KRISTIN CHENOWETH . LOVE LOVE LOVE HER

  • Somehow, this just doesn't have feel as magical as previous years...

  • Green Day will always be amazing even if i dont like @1st century breakdown....

  • Kristin Chenoweth <3

  • Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes were amazing! Those two were the best things that ever happened to Broadway!

  • i bet all of the drag queens are blokey dudes off stage

  • ...why is green day at the tony awards?

  • @yukicross199 One of the musicals uses their music.

  • billy idol will always remain hot

  • Sean Hayes is freakin' amazing

  • I didn't even get fela. It was just a chich squealing. What is it about?

  • I think that Million Dollar Quartet should have done a more high energy song other than Blue Suede Shoes, I saw it and I loved it, but I don't think that this was the best number to choose, it was a great, but not broadway great

  • Kristin Chenoweth is a goddess.

Green Day, get away from the Tonys.

  • @guadaphobiax3SP ...and broadway in general!

  • I honestly could listen to Sean Hayes play piano forever.

  • i don't mind the cast of american idiot singing green day, but green day singing their songs completely ruins the point of the tony awards.

  • @twilightrox2468 why did they get Dolly Parton and Liza Minnelli in then?

  • The balance was off with the sound. You couldn't hear the band, only the singing, which is a shame.

  • No idea Sean Hayes played Piano like that?!?!?

  • @brensasi he plays VIOLIN tooo!!!! i heard seth rudeski talking about it lol

  • the tonys are for singers, not people who try to sing.

  • TOTALLY better than the 2009 Opening Number \^_^/

  • @Jangobadass I couldn't disagree w/ you more Green day was the only good part.

  • FELA SUCKED. the girl was lipsynching!

  • Green Day didn't ruin the performance, but the strobe lights did.

  • im an avid theatre goer and performer and i think american idiot and green day did a wonderful job at the tonys. if anyone sucked it was fela.

  • I'm glad American Idiot didn't win for Best Musical.

  • stop harping on Green Day i say props to the cast and creators for being courageous enough to try something new and different, not to mention its from the same dude who created the amazing spring awakening.. punk rock on broadway i say hell yes..

  • Does Kristen look a little skinner than usual to anyone???

It kind of concerns me actually.

  • @cpegues1 Yes! To me also.

  • STUPID GREEN DAYS RUINS IT

  • way to rape the tony's green day. Sean Hayes, u r amazing

  • LaCageAuxFolles <3 favorite musical of the year

Memphis comes in a close second <3

  • oh memories of brett michaels and his fail last year..

  • Um, Promises Promises, Everyday Rapture, Memphis and La Cage are all RAD.

  • American idiot is the greatest show!!!!!!

  • i love how bad the lip synching the lady from Fela! is doing

  • @RandomPersonman

    what is fela about.....

  • @rent8907 its about the life of the famous african singer named fela kuti

  • @RandomPersonman Actually, that was a technical error. The wrong microphone was on.

  • It was just a bad year for Broadway.

  • @JKVideos wasnt the best but wasnt the worst ya know

  • @thewickedboy2012 So I looked through the comments to say who said American Idiot was a copy of Rent and *incredulously* Les Mis. And I'm sorry. That's stupid. American Idiot may have stemmed from the genre of "rock" musicals that began in part because of Rent, but it is not similar. And I won't even dignify the Les Mis comment with an explanation. That's just plain ignorant. If it's a copy of anything, it's Hair, and even then you can only draw parallels.

I saw it. it was incredible.

  • @Elphaba1979 it was adopted into musical during the 80's.... it is actually a great show next to memphis and everyday raptor...

  • @scorpioninpink I like Memphis, but im just not feeling Everyday Raptor, but La cage aux folles is one of the most amazing musicals i have ever seen. I am what i am is my favorite Male Balled next to Stars from Les Mis.

  • Much as I like Green Day, they really should leave things like this to the musical theatre performers...

  • green day is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of their element here!

  • THE ONLY PERFORMANCE THAT SAVED THE OPENING IS EVERYDAY RAPTURE AND LA CAGE AUX FOLLES!!!

  • @scorpioninpink hey come on, you gotta admit sean hayes and million dollar quartet wasnt bad :p

  • My aunt saw Fela and she said it was really really good

  • Every freakin year the sound and audio is crap ...you would think with all the money they spend to put this on every year they would get sound equipment that actually works

  • gosh, how i love this!

  • i never quite understood what happened with the mixed up vocals of the fela performance

  • was she lip-singing in Fela! ? because she didnt match what we were hearing...

  • i never saw fela. i never saw million dollar quartet. and i never saw next to normal.

but from learning more about them, i just have to see them, anywhere.

  • Million Dollar Quartet!!!!

the other musical from village theater that i enjoy :) besides N2N...which i miss

  • The opening at the 2007 Tonys was a thousand times better. Just sayin'.

  • @madisonemily18 You should've seen the 2009 Tonys...BEST. EVER.

  • From 1:25 to 2:10 when Huey Calhoun is talking, isn't the song "Everybody Wants To Be Black on a Saturday Night" playing in the background?

  • This years Tony awards were hard. Each musical that was up for best musical was good. I wanted all of them to win.

  • I <3 American Idiot!

  • I LOVE THE OPENING NUMBER I JUST HATE FELA(MY DOG MAKES THOSE SOUND WHEN HE WAKES UP IDK WHAT THAT LADY WAS DOING) AND I HATE GREEN DAYS AMERICAN IDIOT ITS JUST A COPY OF RENT AND LES MIS

  • @thewickedboy2012 do you even know what american idiot is about, not even close!

  • @Moritz015 WELL IF IT WAS GOOD IT WOULD OF GOT ATLEST ONE TONY BUT IT DIRENT SO I THINK THAT MEANS ITS NOT GOOD LIKE MEMPHIS THE MUSICAL IS SO GOOD AND GOT THE TONY FOR BEST MUSICAL

  • @thewickedboy2012 wow it kinda did win 2 tonys and just cus it didn't win best musical doesn't mean its not good, wicked didn't win best musical and thats still a pretty great show

  • @thewickedboy2012 turn off the caps lock. and i think american idiot was just fine.

besides, if N2N was running in the Tonys this year, it would have won best musical. cause billy elliot wouldn't be running. :)

  • @thewickedboy2012 it's not a copy or rent and les mis. judging by the way you type, all in caps, you have no right to critisize american idiot. :)

  • @thewickedboy2012 how is it even close to rent and les mis?

  • ugh I love it how when billie joe armstrong comes out and he's all like WHAT'S UP NEW YORK CITY!?!!!! I WAS GOING NUTS (becasue I am an American Iditio freak) but everyone in the audience was like so civilized ahahaha

  • I LOVE SEAN HAYES

  • AT 7:20 I ALMOST SCREAMED!! I LOVE JOHN GALLAGHER JR. SO AMAZING!!! :D

  • @karatechik713 SAME HERE!!! i saw him in american idiot...oh my god I ALMOST DIED

  • Nice to see that the Tonys' continued sound problems with the opening number continue to disappoint. Sigh.

  • @vorvodoss I KNOW!. but I think a show is not a real show without sound problems ahahaha

  • @vorvodoss THATS WHAT BROADWAY MEANS THEY DONT DO PLAYBACK LIKE ALL SHOWS DO>

  • @thewickedboy2012 the tonys sucked this year, and that's because N2N was missing.

  • i love the part where sean hayes is in like a battle of the piano with "jerry"

    it was just so cool

  • i like how in the end of Fela her mouth kept moving but nothing came out except that scream. Fail at lipsyncing? lol

  • I LOVE Huey Calhoun!!!

  • I think Lindsay Mendez and Betsy Wolfe should have been dual-nominated (ala Side Show, Billy Elliot, etc.) for Everyday Rapture. Snubbed.

  • im in love with Jonathan Gallagher Jr.!!!

  • I am in love w/ Sean Hayes. The way he plays that piano, the little shoulder movements and facial expressions are just darling. *sigh, another one lost to the gay camp.

  • Huey Calhoun is AWESOME!!!

  • Does anyone else think "Million Dollar Quartet" is kind of like "Jersey Boys?"

  • everyone who is ragging on the tony's this year, how bout you just calm the fuck down, b/c I bet you can't sing/ perform/ rock out/ bring the house down like green day and you can't take back a sound error on LIVE national television either

  • Am I the only person who enjoyed the Tonys and the opening number this year? Yes, it was different then other years, and yes there were more Jukebox musicals nominated, and yes, there were technical failures, and yes, it's more commercial. For one thing, IT'S A BUISNESS, IT'S HERE TO MAKE MONEY AS WELL AS BRING FORTH PERSONAL EXPRESSION! Also, theatre is always changing to fit the times and the audience. And it's a live show, technical failures are going to happen. Enjoy it for what it is!

  • @jetset59 and leax2028...showbiz is showbiz...deal with it.

  • "Memphis" was the only show nominated that had an original score, yet they're the only show that didn't get a number in the opening. If I were them, I'd feel cheated.

  • @starletdawn It's quite possible that there was another force at work than just the Tonys being jerks, like maybe rehearsals conflicted or something. But I do agree, it is strange that they weren't in the opening.

  • @starletdawn HOCKADOO!!!

  • @starletdawn hey, at least they won

but if u remember, right b4 they were about to hit that last note in the end credits, they got cut off, so it was a win lose for them

  • I mean what the fuck was green day doing at the tonys. I know they like wrote a musical but still come, you dont belong here green day.

  • @jetset59 hey same thing with poisen from last year.

  • This is a hot tranny mess

  • I feel horrible for the woman in Fela. :( She's really talented, but the stupid sound technicians couldn't get it together and ruined the entire segment. Actually, it wrecked the entire night.

  • Oh come ON. Sound problems AGAIN??? This happened last year! If a high school production can do it, why can't they do it on national television for ONE NIGHT? Is it lack of proper equipment or proper technicians? Either way this is unacceptable and disrespectful!

  • I dont think that the girl in FELA! sang what was heard, because he mouth was moving.....it was a sound problem not her problem

  • whoaa what happened to that one lift in come fly away? at like 3:37. aw.

  • Green Day + Tony Awards = What the f*ck ?!

  • @palmtop1000 Green Day + Tony Awards =Epic win.

  • @ABookwormAndProud That's right.

  • @palmtop1000 american idiot. one of the most inventive and amazing peices of art ever

  • @palmtop1000 There is a musical based on the Green Day songs called American Idiot... It follows the same concepts as Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You ect

  • I love how everybody automatically finds something wrong or negative w/ Fela. I'm just going to say that & hopefully something will register in your mind.. She sounds amazing. And obviously the show is about African culture. Speaking of culture........

  • @Talliegh1 and i love how you automatically jumped to the conclusion that everyone is bashing the musical itself, not the horrible sound technicians that ruined the fela woman's song.

  • @ImNotThere100 the ONE comment I saw actually talking about the technical aspect was written only a week ago. I responded to people like lyras12 among others that actually took time out to give only negative feedback about the Fela section pretty much right after the video was posted. Sorry if you were offended but I was too at the subliminal negativity that has been surrounding the show in general! Thanks

  • GREEN DAY :)

  • the worst tony opening number ever! the entire production sucked!!!

  • @arnelakawhitewash not at all. everyday rapture and promises, promises, not to mention la cage aux folles killed it!!!

  • ...what happened in Fella???

  • Levi and Sean are freakin amazing!!

  • What would a tony awards opening number be without major amounts of sound fails.

  • @ell0mynameis At least we know they're really singing :-P

  • @CZD8809 Thats why its the Tony's not the Grammys or the VMA

  • @ell0mynameis will they EVER get the sound right at the Tony's?

  • I Love u Chenoweth

  • Kristin and John jr. are my favorites in the whole thing...

    and of course Mr. Hayes

  • Sean Hayes is amazing at the piano!!! I love him!!!!!!!!

  • Just noticing this for the first time, the Fela lady is mouthing the Laaadaadadaadaaa instead of the scary screaching sound. That is a serious soundperson fail....:-/

  • I wish wicked could still be nominated....

  • crap musicals this year

  • @clevm002 Nothing that struck any interest to me.

  • 8:40- OAKLAND! HOLLA!

  • GREEN DAY <3 haha and didnt they say Lea Michele was supposed to be in there somewhere?? hmm..

  • @kuhll96 She and Matthew Morrison performed later in the show.

  • @kuhll96 no, she and mathew morrison got their own little number

  • Yeah I know what people are saying this year was just sort of like.... less diverse among them. That said CHENO ROCKS!

  • American Idot is kind of a new RENT,,

  • @garveroli yeah it is! lol :)

  • @garveroli hahahahaha you're so right

  • @garveroli But much less brilliant. Not that I don't like American Idiot, but RENT is just... too awesome. haha :)

  • Could someone explain what happened in Fela? o.O

  • This years musicals weren't that exciting, or mabye the opening didn't do them justice.
