  • Best ever.

  • damn you emmit smith for disliking this video its ok and face facts that walter was better

  • The day Sweetness ran farther than Jim Brown......

...It's getting a little dry in here......

  • i like how back then when someone breaks a record everyone including the other team cheers for him, but now its just not the same.

  • what a great moment-I remember watching this

  • probally Red Grange was the only running back better than him

  • @arriba1999 LOL, WTF?

  • They dont make em like that anymore.

  • I like how all the saints players congratulated him

  • Emmitt Smith doesn't even deserve to be mentioned along side this man. no better role model has ever played the game.

  • October 7, 1984...one year before the Super Bowl run.

  • I was at that game...

  • Much more emotional than Smith breaking the record.

  • Credit Tim Ryan and Johnny Morris for keeping their mouths shut for several minutes while everyone could take in th emoment

  • I like how everyone is cheering for him and he helping up a saint... classic Walter Payton

  • Who ever hates Walter Payton is probably a SAints fan.

  • Jim Brown was the greatest running back ever to TOUCH a football. That said, Payton was truly a remarkable athlete, deserving of all the kudos he's gotten. What a great time the 60's and 70's were for running backs... look at the names: Jim Brown, Jim Taylor, Franco Harris, Walter Payton, O.J. Simpson, Chuck Foreman. I'd be remiss not to mention Barry Sanders, although he came a bit later. There's plenty of glory to go around. All these men are deserving of our respect.

  • However Payton was the best PLAYER to ever touch the football. He could do anything, run, block, hit, and even pass! I love Jim Brown and i know when he played there were less games a season and all but Walter was just all round the greatest ever!

  • The 1 dislike was from Jim brown himself

  • walter payton>payton manning

  • Saints legend Rickey Jackson was the first to congratulate him...that's good to see.

  • sounds a little like micheal jackson, same personality a bit (butt) no little boy sex here.

  • @rrrjjjmmm100

There's no proof Micheal jackson had sex with kids? dummy !

  • @rrrjjjmmm100 um this is football dude go troll on a vid wer some1 cares. and dont pussy out on not commenting back, comment back u fail troller

  • seconds after setting the all-time rushing record, everyone in the building wants to celebrate his accomplishment, and what's walter doing? helping a defender up off the field. that was payton in a nutshell.

  • omg u cnAT SEE ME IM A NINJA NINJA NINJA NIN NIN JA

  • A Truly beautiful man, so very harsh that he was taken before most of us. a Genius, a Sportsman, a Player, a Gentleman, a Spokesman, a Standard, a Friend and most of all one of the finest men ever to play this beautiful game. God Bless Walter Payton.

  • Born in 1990... So I never witnessed Walter. Ive watched tons of videos, and tributes, and interviews of Walter Payton. And he was just as impressive off the field as he was on the field. This man was truly something special... Cared about everyone, always put himself last, he'll truly be missed. This world is a better place with guys like Mr. Walter Payton.

  • @ChiBulls23MJ nice touch bro and spot on, too. He was there for his boy even in his prime he was a familly man... one thing that never changed was his ferocious genius... I've never seen a 6'2 dude with balance like he did. Maybe Barry Sanders the closest, but imagine Barry Sanders at 6'2... that is Walter Payton.

  • @ChiBulls23MJ It was truly a joy to watch him play. I remember that 85 Bears team who dominated on both sides of the ball. He was truly a class act and a amazing runner. He is definitly one of the best runners i've ever had the opportunity to see.

  • I wish I could have seen him play. Since I was born in 1988, that wasn't possible.

  • I wish walters son would of took in payotns shoes. started running just like his father.

  • Wouldnt it be something if walters son became the next best running back? damn!!

  • if Jim Brown played against Larence Tayor, Reggie White, Ray Lewis, Demarcus Ware, he would of been like Brian Westbrook !

  • sweetness was special but if jim brown played the same amount of seasons as sweetness jb wulda broke 20,000, but im takin nothing away from walter paytons achievments

  • I was present at this game when Walter Payton broke the record. It was the first Bears game I ever attended. It was indeed a spectacular event to witness this historical moment. Walter Payton was simply a remarkable human being. A class individual. I stopped rooting for the Bears after Super Bowl XX when the Bears failed to give Walter the ball on the 1 yard line to score a touchdown. The Bears became greedy and I was disappointed. He deserved a lot better.

  • @sfgnyy there was like 4 patriots on him every single play but i dont know if it was the end of the game if it was they should of gave it to payton beacuse they would of won either way but if it was during half time thats different they weren't sure about them winning it or losing it so its really walter's fault for being so good

  • @itsmybunny1 It was late in the second half and the Bears were routing the Patriots. The Bears were winning convincingly and the Patriots were out of the game. There is no excuse.

  • @sfgnyy How old are you?

  • Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith were good friends one time Emmitt was injured in a game against the Bears and the retired Walter Payton drove to the Hospital to check on him and encouraged Him. Walter said that if any running back breaks his record he wanted Emmitt to break it. I went to college with Walter and did not want Emmitt to break his record but records are made to be broken...PEACE

  • Emmitt Smith did it for the fame.

but Walter Payton did it for the game.

i dont care what they say

    walter payton all the way!

Smith looked to beat the record

but Payton looked to play the game

as he said "I get more out of chasing as opposed to obtaining"

  • Emmitt Smith is a good running back, played when hurt and pretty good person too. But I could name 10-15 running backs I'd rather have then him. I can't name 1 I'd rather have in the back field then Walter Payton.

  • NO JOKE,was in a car with some dude driving around Chicago the day the sweetness died. After seeing several box vans with #34 painted on the side, the driver,NOT my friend, said "one less nigger".Five min. later his engine threw a rod-want to see me hit the rev limiter?-no more Buick Riviera for his ass.Sure I had to walk home also, but fuck him.

  • @LoydGDBonafide Way to go!

  • R.I.P. Sweetness, a great player and a great man off the field.

  • its sick how they both played for the bears

  • You're obviously not a fan of Da BEARS if you can't spell the coaches name right!! DITKA!!!

  • Nice, teams respecting each other giving him props on an amazing moment.

Now they act like fucking clowns from a QB sack, big fucking deal.

  • they really stopped the whole game??

  • the man was great get off the field he the best n tears

  • the man was great get off the field he the best n tears

  • luv the bears die hard fan chi-town

  • I'm a lifelong Packers fan, and even I would say I miss Walter Payton. Total class act on and off the field. I'd even buy and wear his jersey.

  • RIP Walter Payton it was great watchin you play miss you.

  • Comment removed

  • In my mind no one will evere come close to Jim Brown.

  • Yeah, ok dude what are you on? Jim Brown is good but he is no where NEAR as good of football player and as good of PERSON as walter payton.

  • @k1lesnar Jim Brown was only great for his time because he was bigger than everyone, and as fast as everyone...Walter wasnt too big, only 200 pounds, but had more heart than anyone, and dealt more punishment than most

  • The best overall football player ever.

  • whow!!! smith is nowhere near walter payton. wtf is wrong with that guy! smith played for like 15 16 years before he broke it and remember, walter is the BEST not just cuz he broke the record but cuz he also was great at blocking, passing, returning kicks, catching, and tackling... i wanna see smith do all that

  • Smith is nowhere near Payton..nor is anyone that has ever played the game

  • beast

  • obfenix check your stats... WALTER PAYTON WAS THE BEST RB OF ALL TIME. here are some facts to prove it:

    1. Payton broke the record in a little under 9 seasons with 15 games each season (Walter beat Brown's record in less games)

  • It's all a matter of opinion. I think Barry Sanders is the greatest RB of all time, but there will be others who disagree. Just a matter of opinion.

  • f

    2. During the first 8 of the 9 years of his career the Bears had losing teams (Brown's teams all had a winning record)

    3. Payton didn't have a decent O-line during most of those years (Emmit had the dream-team of O-linemen in the 1990's and Brown had similar caliber linemen in the 1960's)

    4. Walter Payton was a class act. (Brown is a cry-baby)

fobfenix get your facts straight before you post opinion on here

  • yeah and jim brown also did it when they only played 12 games in a season too. Jim brown is still the G.O.A.T. if there is anyone better then its Emmit Smith.

  • walter broke this record twice, the next time he touched the ball he lost yards and then broke it again. lol

  • didint Jim Brown only play for 10 years?

  • From what I heard, Walter gained all those yards playing behind a poor offensive line most of his career.

That makes his accomplishment truly remarkable.

  • True, he had no where near the OL that Emmitt had in Dallas.

  • Walter Payton breaks the Great & Greatest RB of All Time Jim Brown's Record.

  • its great to see the other team mates shake his hand when he gets the record

  • Man ohh man, this man is a beast NFL's all time rushing record, if theres a Most break tackle record he will be on the top na na na na na na na cant touch him.,

  • Fuck you cowboys fan!!

  • smith came close but he was never NEAR the kind of PERSON walter was

  • y is that?

  • stats r leaning towards payton

  • Now days people play for money and fame

Payton plaid for the love of it payton is and will always be the best...

  • walter holds the record now for over 16,000 yrds in 16 seasons so over 1000yrds per season so thats means Walter Payton was the best running back ever

  • I miss Walter Payton. The NFL will never have classier players again.

  • 100% Class.

A lot of our current crop of Twittering, self-absorbed, smack-talking divas that comprise 95% of today's NFL rosters could do well to emulate Mr. Payton, both on AND off the field.

  • This man is very humble and is the best running back that lived

  • Walter Payton was the greatest on and off the field... wish more players were as humble as he was.

  • Walter Payton was the best. Class act as well. I wrote to him when I was around 8, 9, or 10 years old late 80s and also sent a colored drawing I did of him. He sent me an autographed black and white picture back in the mail and it was one of the greatest feelings and childhood memories I have.

  • what an amazing achievment and probably the greatest feeling in the world

  • lmao devin hester

  • amazing

  • Simply amazing.

  • well said

  • Walter said that. He knows that Jim played shorter. Walter is still waaaayyy better.

  • What's with the shit talking? Both players were great players. Both had class. Something you obviously don't have.

  • #44 flipped for no reason lol

  • the best there ever was love you walter!

  • walter payton

    emmett smith

    barry sanders

    jim brown

    LT

    OJ

    devin hester

  • you forgot bo jackson

  • @djpa34 devin hester isnt even a running back, are you fucking retarded OJ?

  • Greatest running back and all around player in NFL history. R.I.P. Sweetness.

  • 1. Walter Payton

    2. Ditka

    3. Da Bears

    4. Polish Sausage

  • 25 years ago today, this happened, i was there

  • i was too wasnt that the greatest?

  • What were the win-loss records of both of these teams heading into this game?

  • what the hell are you talking about man emmit had plenty of class man

  • Emmits one of my favorites, no one has more class or ability then walter

  • Emmit might be the record holder but he doesnt have NEAR the class Walter had.

  • Records exits to be broken.

The fact that Emmits is the actual owner , do not mean that he is the best.

If walter would have play with the O Line in dallas he would have made a lot more yars that with the cappy bears O-Line.

  • whatever barry is still the best

  • This aint shit compared to Emmit Smith---Smith is the all time leading rusher...Not Payton not that pussy barry sanders--its Emmit Smith----Smith has 3 rings walter has 1, lmao--fuck you bear fans and lion fans who think otherwise that smith is not the best of all time

  • not even close..... Payton definitely the best back to ever play.

  • smith is not the best, payton played 14 games a year where smith played 16, huge difference, payton is a better athlete than smith

payton, sanders, dickerson, jim brown, juice in that order

  • Dont count out Barry Sanders, he wasnt that far behind Walter and just all of sudden retired

  • congrats to the greatest running back of all time i was not alive at this point but my mom was at the game

  • Finally....a Payton video without horrible rap or RNB music destroying it. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!!

  • listen man emmit smith will always be in the shadow of walter payton... walter did it first! when your the first, nobody remembers the second! everyone remembers the gold medalist, but no one remembers who got the silver! walter is the greatest of all time. thats not opinion, its a statistical fact! emmit was good but walter was the best. fuck emmit smith...

  • wow we got emmitt smith haters in the house. love it. Walter was probably a better athlete but dammit an O-Line can only help u get 5 yards or mayb 8. Emmitt also worked hard and made cuts and broke tackles. So shit give the man some due credit to breakin it.

  • He got touse 5 - 8 yards for many years in dallas, plus we play more years than walter to be able to reach the 12,000 mark.

The fact that he owns the record do not mean he is the beast ever.

  • The thing that makes walter payton the greatest running back of all time is what he does after the whistle, watch 1:31 he first runs the guy over, then he picks him up and pats him on the head. He's a true athlete

  • its truly walters record not Emmitts he only got the record cause he played an extra 100 years

  • agreed. fuck emmitt smith. i hate that piece of shit. WALTER PAYTON FOR LIFE!

  • 2 the great RB'S on the rushing list

  • 4:30. add 4,326 to that total when it was all said and done. Amazing.

  • the cameraman at 2:10 in the red and black is super famous. Look at the angle he's at. How many times have you seen that shot in slow motion on ESPN?

  • Sweetness was one of if not the greatest running back in NFL history. But give more credit to Emmitt Smith. He only had that "Top of the World O-Line" for half his career; after 1996 it was downhill for Dallas. People can also say he played way too long, but it's not just get up Sunday and play. It's run up the field and get pounded by defenders physically and mentally over and over again. He had unbelievable mental toughness and perseverance, that's why he deserved to break the record.

  • Emmit Smith ! PISS ON EMMIT SMITH !

My grandma could get 16000 yards behind his O line.

  • I agree totally, if you put payton on any of those 90's cowboys teams the cowboys would have won way more than 3 super bowls, look at all the horible teams payton played on in chicago, if you put emmit smith on any of those chicago teams he wouldn't have even come close to getting the yards he did like he gained with the cowboys, put simple walter payton was a way better athlete and tallent than emmit smith

  • LOL. No doubt man. Emmitt was definitely blessed.

  • i was there, season ticket holder, probably the best moment i've had at a game

  • pure class..woops..

  • i like how he goes over to the press, tells them to get off the feild haha. you wont see that kind of player in the league today. emmit hadd a damn ceremony.. the game stops for like 5-10 minutes while walter shakes everyones hand and solutes the crowd and walks back tot he huddle. peeer class.

  • wow I remember watching this game as a kid. Payton was one of my all time favorite backs, RIP to a true football legend.

  • Payton didn't even have the team Emmitt had the whole time he was there.

not to mention payton even filled in at various other postions even kicker at times & still did the job right he was an all-around great player.

  • I don't bitch about supporting cast. I judge players based on what I saw from them with my own two eyes. Both Emmit and Walter were great and top 5 all time, but Walter has a slight edge over Emmitt.

  • ozonemkr i couldnt put it better.....if emmitt was on the bears he wouldnt have come close to walter.....and if walter was on emmitts team wen the cowboys were on top of the world....walt would hav over 20,000 yds

  • Battlecat... with all due respect (and I agree with your statement) you have it backwards. Sweetness did not have premier athletes around him like Emmit did. The Cowboys had serious weapons other than Emmit. For most of his career, Walter was the only REAL weapon the Bears had on offense. If Emmit had to work with the same talent as Walter did, he would have never been close to Walter's numbers. Put Walter on the same teams that Emmit played with and he may have rushed for 20,000 yards!

  • I disagree. Smith was always a great runner. Put him on the Bears, and he'd have the same results.

  • You obviously didnt SEE much of what Walter did. Emmit was a good player no doubt but what ozone said is 100% true.

  • If payton had the offensive line that emmitt smith had in dallas smith would have never got close to the all-time rushing record. R.I.P. SWEETNESS!

  • he is the best running back ever, dont go by records

  • payton & jordan...just pure competitors. "get off the field!" you gotta love that. jordan gets into the hall of fame and he's only sorry he can't play anymore. brilliant!

  • Payton is the best player ever one of the best athletes ever.

  • and a great person off the field.

  • Walter the best ever Emmit Smith had the greatest offensive line ever to help him break the record.

  • emmitt also played way to long, the only person besides payton that shoulda had the record was sanders

  • That is also true.

  • Greatest of all time.

  • i love how he just tells everyone to get off the field, he wants to keep playing!!

  • course he does it against the saints.

  • I like how even the opposing team congratulated him. Shows how many people just respected the man.

  • agreed

  • No matter how many people actually beat his rcords he will be the best running back of all time. Nuff said

  • i agree with most of u. Walter Payton IS the best of all time!!!

  • There's nobody like Payton in football today. He was just a class act all the way. I was lucky enough to see the Bears at their prime in the mid-80s multiple times at Soldier Field. Wasn't at this game though:( Oh well!

  • Yes.........

  • did they win this game?

  • Brent mentioned it just before the interview.

  • also walter had a bad line and bad blockers back then

  • I was born in 1993, and my mom and dad were great friends with Payton and his family. My mom actually sold his house, which is how they became friends. It was such an honour to meet this manand his family, my favorite player of all time.

  • Without a doubt walter is the greatest of all time. There was no one better.

  • ...Barry Sanders.

  • emmit played to beat the record those last few years period he was a good running back but he played past his prime its a matter of fact.

  • I agree with you and i am a Dallas fan.He would have never got it,if Barry never retired early.

  • regardless of his record being beaten and all that crap, can you say enough about a man who breaks an enormous record, and first helps up the defender, then takes congrats from everyone, and then just yells at everyone to get off the field so he can go back to work.....that right there is sweetness

  • If Walter had the OL that Emmitt did, he would have had 20K yards.

  • And Barry would have had 25k

  • haha and we would have seen him play 10 more years.

  • Best ever.

  • for real. Emmit is such a fake stayed in the league to beat his record. Stayed past his prime. just crap.

  • wow if he is good enough to make it that far how is a a fake

    no offense to walter whatsoever

  • because Emmit was good ok but he I dunno he stayed in the league just too beat the record. He should of been gone a for years down
