Do koi slow down with age? Mine are about 1-6 years old ranging from, 14 to 24 inches. But they zip around the pond at top speed bumping into each other, I like how yours are nice and relaxed.
@Reccasama Koi with good growth genes can reach 24" before they reach 2 years old. Bigger koi (above 30 inches) are much more graceful swimmers and they find the zipping around of small koi very annoying.
@jordan628trisha I'm only in my 6th year as a koi hobbyist. I only have 1 pond, and it has been renovated 4 times. Am very happy with my pond system now.
@hooinc WOW, ok, I would of figured with such a gorgeous pond and quality fish, you had at least 10+ years experience in the hobby, you must of had a great mentor in koi ponds.
@kaytao Thanks KT. I actually wish they would release their eggs into the pond. Yes, the water will foul up but some major water changes would do the trick. Instead, if the eggs are not released, there might be egg impaction problems threatening their lives further down the road. Also, sometimes the eggs don't develop in equal amounts on either side of the body, leading to lopsidedness.
The fish definitely seem to like the new food Paul...... they also seem to be growing well ! I wonder if you've done any measurements over the last 6 months ?
@sandymcintosh Hi Sandy, long time no hear! No, actually since March 2009, I have not done any measurements on a pond-wide scale, mainly because many of my koi were matured koi and I did not expect much growth. However, since I have a few little ones now, I will do a measurement exercise for the whole pond later this year, maybe October or November, and you will definitely see it on this channel! Cheers.
@malaysia1971 Thanks bro. Rescue is coming for the scaredy cat shiro this weekend - Brudder Wong's little karashigoi will be making the transfer to my pond. :-) Apparently the Karashiwong is definitely not a shy koi even at such a small size, so with this company, maybe the shiro will be more brave too.
@jakoi945 The thing about this shiro is that she won 1st prize 75BU in the 2006 All Japan Koi Show and subsequently 2nd prize 80BU in the 2007 All Japan Koi Show when she was just 76cm. Following that, she spent another 14 months (including 5 months in a mud pond) in Japan but Omosako could not extract anymore growth from her. So she arrived in my pond in March 2008 at 76cm. I am very happy that I managed to grow her another 6cm since then.

One day I hope to have a shiro like yours! How big was you shiro utsuri when you bought her?

@jakoi945 She was 76cm when I bought her in 2007. Managed to further grow her to 82cm in my pond before she stopped growing......or has she?
