Terrible remakes like this one, Donkey Kong, and PacMan killed the Atari market (and the disastrous 5200 didn't help). However when Atari started out and was making original games like Warlords they were untouchable. But Colecovision arrived and was turning out much more faithful versions of arcade games and Atari couldn't compete.
They could've at least made Mr. Egg round with a yolk. And I think Mr. Pickle could've been the same shape as Mr. Egg, and then they could've made him green too, and then they could've put some darker green or black slits in the middle to represent seeds. However, they did make Mr. Sausage very well, and you can actually tell him as what he's supposed to be. If only the creators put the effort in for Mr. Egg and Mr. Pickle as they did with Mr. Sausage. At least the game plays well though. :)
wow..i just watched this vid in its entirety and read thru every comment posted on here...and i guess im the only damn person who knows this....but on the atari 2600 version of burger time...there is actually the ability to PAUSE the gameplay...YES, you can actually PAUSE an atari 2600 game. ....you can pause the game simply by toggling the difficulty switch during gameplay. ....how can classic game room review this game and either have no idea about this feature, or forgot to mention it? hmmmm
You should pick up the "data east" arcade collection for wii... Great games like Burger Time, Bad Dudes and Super Real Darwin. You'd get a kick out of darwin.
funnest game EVER!!!!! love this game i got the NES version and i love it..if i could ever find an arcade stand up of this it would be the coolest :)......and YES REUBEN TIME!!
I have this game for my Atari 2600, damn I forgot how craptacular the graphics were in this game for the 2600. HEHE. However, this game play is simular to the arcade original. The ColecoVision version of this game looked and sounded damn near identical to the arcade version. The Intellivision version of this game actually also looks superior too this Atari 2600 port.
There were two types of cartridges, a 2kb and 4kb one. Obviously, the 2kb cartridge was cheaper, and was used with Pac-Man to save space. Maybe this one is the same, the graphics are bad because they were using a budget cartridge.
On another topic - how were games like this one coded back in the day?
I loved the arcade version. In the arcade, you were chased by hotdogs, fried eggs, and pickle slices. But for the 2600, you were chased by hotdogs, eggs, CHEESE, and BREAD STICKS. Yeah, that white square was an egg. The orange square was a cheese slice, and that vertical line was a bread stick. The graphics were horrid. Most 2600 games were poor translations of the arcade. I wonder how the programmers feel now looking back on their career with graphics this bad. Could they have done better?
Yeah my father just brutalizes the Atari 2600 day and night and I try to explain to him the same the thing, there were times they coulda' done better, but really there only so much you can say; the Atari 2600 came out in 1977.
Like usual The Intellivision version was way better even better the the arcade version is some ways because it controlled better and was not anywhere near as aggravatingly hard.
Awsome! I have this atari game too! its alot of fun! If u want an arcade accurate version there is a hits disk for the playstation 1! u will get addicted to it! Ha Ha!!
You can play it on MAME. I remember the arcade machine spending countless quarters. Also for the intellivision, there was Diner which was a off shoot of the game. Also don't forget super burger time. You can grab it on MAME also.
Great review. Over at Atariage someone created a BT clone for the 7800 called Beef Drop VE It would be nice to see you do some reviews on Atari 2600 and 7800 Home Brew games.
The "VE" version has standard sound while non-VE has a better sound chip in the cartridge (more expensive). Not sure if the non-VE version is available anymore.
But both versions are the same otherwise, so no big deal.
Anyone who likes BT and has a 7800 should definitely check it out. That means you Mark. :)
Intellivision's is the best. Coleco second. Coleco went with the vertical route which was authentic to the arcade (you lose a lot of the screen), while Intelli turned it into a horizontal game. Sorry, this 2600 version sucks--typical M Network crap.
I don't get it, when you get caught by the food a pleasant song is played. It should be more of a Damn I got killed by a Hotdog song...know what i mean....
You'll be hard pressed to find a working original arcade machine now.
This was Data East's first and only attempt at making an arcade machine that loads games via audio cassette. which they soon dumped as tapes wore out and took too long to load.
If you like burgertime, there's a kick ass version on the gameboy. I believe it only came out in Japan, so you may have a tough time finding it. I have said Japanese version, so if you have an information, hit me up with a message. ;)
My brother once joked that a friend of ours was so much of a 1337 hacker that he could take an Atari Burgertime cartridge and somehow hack it into X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Just felt like sharing that.
Nope. It's been available since mid 2006. So long as you have a PC on the same network you can go online although flash has issues with sound but then again that should be fixed soon.
Burgertime is also on the NES---pretty good version.
Also, a new Homebrew exists called "Beef Drop" for the Atari 5200 &7800, available on Atariage's website. It's very good.
For some reason, when I play Burgertime on my 7800, I have infinite lives--some kind of bug, which I've documented in my videos section here on YouTube.

Graphics look hopeless but that's not surprising for the system. The gameplay is there at least and that's the most important thing.
I'm amazed at some of the stuff they ported to the poor 2600. It just wasn't designed for this at all, but they made it work.
