Although Ray Walston did a great job portraying Candy, I would have loved to have seen Burgess Meridith in the role, since he played Lennie in the original movie. It would have been a nice little "full circle" moment and I could picture him doing a terrific job.

It revolves around companionship and loneliness (which is ironic) so it was important for Candy to feel lonely because of his dog being killed, just like it was for George after shooting Lennie. They both lost companions.
