This is for capcadet417 . There are, or at least were, three pipelines:
Jets, Props, Helos. I guess Jets are sometimes referred to as "Strike/Fighter", Props are sometimes referred to as "Maritime". Traditionally, Fixed Wing require higher grades, (a "Jet cutoff"). That being said, I'm sure some Helobubba will take offense to this comment and say that's NOT true. Of course there are Helo drivers out that that finished at the top of their class. Your best bet is to talk to a recruiter.
This was GREAT! How the heck did you find the time to put this together during flight school? I got my wings in Jan' 82 and little has changed. SEMPER FI!!
For gammathetasbear's question about which pipeline you go, it's based on three factors, (in this order).
1. Needs of the Service
2. Your grades
3. Your preference
Traditionally, if you graduate at the top of your class you are assured of your top choice.
Question for anybody going/gone though this process by way of Marine Corps. What would be the factor that gets you helos vs jets or props? Is it the ASTB or what? Thanks
@Wendigo127 I'm not sure if this is just a British thing, but in the royal navy to my understanding, you say your preference, and they make the decision based on your ability. That might be for chosing which helo acutally I can't remember, read a autobiography from a lynx pilot, it might be you get graded on your flying ability in prop, then if you're good enough go to fast jets, or helicopters.
The soundtrack had a bunch of different stuff, you can see that they spoof Star Wars and the Terminator, with audio from the movies. During the helicopter landings on the ship, it was the Pirates of the Carribean theme.
Ask yourself this. Why does a man or woman have to have a Degree NOW to fly these aircraft. Back in the day (1960-1992) you didn't. Everything I learned about flying...I learned in Flight School...I didn't learn a single damn thing about flying while i was in college. To me it's just a way to weed out and select "Certain people" You don't need a degree to drive your car. So why should you need one to fly a plane? I once asked that question to my CAG...Never got an answer.
I'm not going to speak against your experience but I know many successful people who are considered a minority by the American standard but that hasn't stopped them. Our Commodore is very serious about bringing in more minorities into the jet business but he can only do so much. At the end of the day, the individual must have the drive to want something so bad that they will work their ass off and I feel that the American culture is too sympathetic towards individual failure for that to happen.
I agree with you...It shouldn't be easy for anyone...but come on man...The ratio is just aweful and believe me...It doesn't have anything to do with the amount of Minorites that apply...Alot of these guys are discarded and talked away from even trying to become a pilot...I had a friend who wanted to fly....The recruiter made up all kind of excuses to try and talk him out of being an aviator...He ended up becoming a supply officer....soon after he quit and got kicked out. He ruined him.
Now call me an asshole if you want but if I were the one selecting future pilots for a VERY expensive training program, I'd want someone who has actually shown some ability to sit in the classroom environment, learn what is presented and then go our and put it to use. Some thing in flying come with practice but study habbits/monkey skills/general hand eye coordination can't really be "taught".
The asshole response wasn't to you...It was to the other fella. Anyways you have your points of view and i have mine...I take it that your a newly J.O. Congrats...My career in the Navy has come and gone...I respect any man that suits up to defend our great country...I've since moved on to something new. Best of luck to you.
ok, maybe you should go back to college because you just compared operating one of the must complicated piece of machinery in the world to driving a car.
they weed out people who can't obtain a 4-year degree because it's unlikely those people will be able to absorb the amount of information needed to fly something like the f-18.
cmon, you should have figured that out on your own. your CAG probably didn't answer you becuase it was such a knuckleheaded question.
You think so huh? LOL...Dude there's plenty of top pilot's throughout our history that flew fighter jets and they didn't have degrees...One thing i learned about fighter school...Everything is TAUGHT...No one comes into flight school knowing how to fly a plane...It's Taught...You can say what you want...I'm just telling you how i feel about it...Those rules and regulations were set up at a time where Minorities were looked upon as being less than dogs. Think about it and get the clue.
My comparison between flying a fighter plane and driving a car is this...ANYONE CAN BE TRAINED TO DO IT. I think you understood what i was talking about...You just wanted to be an asshole. It's amazing what the human body can do when it's allowed to get used to the physical demands put on it. Anyone can fly a plane...Rules are set in place to weed out people...believe me when i tell you. Before Top gun came out...The Navy would take anyone wishing to fly.
Well, i'm not trying to sound like an asshole now but I would say that you should not assume it to be so easy that "anyone can be trained to do it". There are plenty of intelligent people who do not make it though the training and there are an equal number who end up losing their wings or worse, kill themselves. Flying for the Navy/Marines is a stressful and dangerous business and many have lost their lives to prove that.
some of the best pilots in the world have been killed...I know that..I had a friend of mine who died on the lincoln....I met him in flight school...He was assigned to the hornet and i was assigned to the Tomcat...He was a great aviator...He would eventually become "Top Nugget" one our second deployment...he was killed.....Not sure what happened but he flew into the water...Very sad day for everyone.
Also, I understand that there was the Navcad program which helped those w/o college degrees enter Naval aviation and the Navy is trying it now with Warrant Officers. You and other should understand that being a pilot does not mean you are flying 24/7. You also have to deal with the whole leadership side of the equation. The Military wants college education because the average stud has proven that he can absorb textbooks, something high school/college dropouts are unable to do.
I don't know anything about your friend or his situation but is there any such thing as personal responsibility? Why does the blame always go to someone else? At the end of the day you have to decide for yourself to fight for what you want no matter what the response. There are thousands of recruiters across the country, he could have talked with someone else, he could have pushed the issue himself...the list goes on. Only you care most about your career..so make it go in the right direction.
You are right...But remember this...Just because you made it and someone else didn't...Doesn't necessary mean that you were better...I know alot of guys who were better than me...I made it and they didn't....alot of things to consider...but you have your points and like i said...I have mine...doesn't mean either of us are right or wrong...best of luck to man....take care.
Alot of people will probably jump on me for saying this...But this seems to be a big problem in the US forces...When you look at that graduating class what do you see...You see 30+ students...only one minority and one woman...I know that the military get's alot more than just one of maybe two minority and wommen applicants. Kind of sad...but great informative video.
It is sad, but there isn't much the navy can do about it. they have the same requirements for all pilots, but women and minorities simply do not apply for the flight program in large numbers. they cannot lower standards to keep sub par pilots regardless of race or gender, even if it would help their image. from what i have seen personally, the success rate among women, men, white, and minorities are even. more should apply!
Being a "minority", who was born in a 3rd world country and is now living his dream, I really don't think you can put the blame on the Navy or the military in general for the lack of diversity. This country offers free public education to anyone who is willing to just sit there and accept it and yet you see so many kids throwing it all away. The opportunity is there but like they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Don't give me that...I was in the Navy as well as a 1310 ...I was in the Navy for 9 Years and i only saw 2 other black fighter pilot's the whole time i was in there. VF-31. All I'm saying is this. Back in the day, at the height of the cold war and the mid 80's to early 90's...They would take just about anyone and turn them into a fighter pilot...After the movie top gun...They made the demands just ridiculous...alot of good minorities or men and women in general were turned away.
Great vid! btw...yes, you can have 20/40 UNCORRECTed and still recieve a pilot med qual. don't let vision stand in your way...either get glasses or prk...either way you can make it happen.
dont know how it works in the states but in the UK the vision requirments for Army/Navy/Air Force arent actually the same,
RAF is 6/6 ucorected but navy/army are 6/12 uncorected, though surgical corection in the UK is a bar to entry as the procedure is considered eye trauma.
Corective lenses are acceptable in te Army and Navy for new recruits and only for experienced aircrew in the RAF.
Might be worth checking out what surgical procedures are acceptable for entry before having anything done.
i read taht you can have 20/40 at worst uncorrected and 20/20 corrected to go into pilot school!!! is that true i hope so i have to wear glasses i have an astimatism and i dont know if i could get in with out getting surgery???
I'm guessing that it wouldn't be a very good idea to get a private pilots license before applying to become a pilot, because then they have to tear down all the habits they don't want you to have that the civilians taught you... They want people to a have some skill but not too much to where they have to change your entire style.
not true. shows that you have a personal motivation and vested interest, rather than applying and training on a whim. while its true habits can be bad, any young person flying for less than a couple years isnt going to have concrete bad habits that can't be easily re-structured.
