Yes. Had a highly modified GNOME desktop starting with Solaris 10 and went to a more or less standard implementation of GNOME starting with OpenSolaris. Word is that AIX will probably transition to GNOME here shortly as industry as a whole moves away from CDE.

I wish nix distros would just ditch kde and gnome already. They are old and tired.. Everything is old and tired really. Nix distros are all the same, nothing really differs between them. If one nix dev actually bothered with making a totally new fresh gui, they would most likely succeed instead of just being "another linux".

Here's how:Screw start menus and whatnot. Radial menus with keyboard shortcuts. Remove all title bars for apps. STRIP IT DOWN

Check out MAYA then copy that from that ui

If you're only using Unix for KDE or Gnome then why not install KDE on Windows. The UI is just candy, it's the tools that make Unix great.

well thats the freedom of linux. U can use a start menu such as gnomenu, but if he prefers a radial menu thats perfectly fine. Everyone has the freedom to radically change the source code and make their own Linux distro if they want to. So no ones really right or wrong, its all preference. It's really not worth getting all worked up about it

Well this apply so much to Linux distributions, other Unix systems are more organized and have a better development, but their market is not to home users, like Solaris.

To do something radical on Linux systems, they gotta follow the LSB, remake the Linux kernel again, and just try to put off those hard levels of use on something that could be easy on other O.S, but thats a big problem.

If at least Linux developers follow an standard to all distros, that will really cure lot of headaches.
