  • @spanky489

All the best music in the world has roots in Africa!

  • The 9 people disliking this are probably f*ucking ignorant

  • The David Sanborn Show was one of the GREAT shows on tele, showcasing talents that would not otherwise be seen, but sadly America was not ready for this, opting instead for car chase shows, reality shows featuring mega dysfunctional people or informercials.

  • i honestly cant see anything similar in these two songs other than the beggining and even that is vague

  • Well I guess spanky489 is from Balkans since he knows about Dino (Rip off) Merlin. To all you other guys: Just chill out! He is trolling and we Balkan boys are best in trolling. He never saw a black person in his life. And probably likes Hip Hop sung by "AmoNiggaz"!. By the way, this song is great but the "Thiely" from ETOIL DE DAKAR is really weird cool shit. Makes me sorry for being from Balkans and not understand the word. Shwari!

  • Comment removed

  • Youssous released his in the 1980s, while Merlin released his version in 2000. Whop copied who?

  • And it pains you that he has so much talent, don't it? Which is why Merlin copied him. The guy from the "fukin jungle" is superior to you in every way.

  • if hes so superior to me than why am i wearing underwear and he isnt? good game?

  • @spanky489 Why offend these people have you ever heard of Pangea? If not that's an old continent and probably all the humans come from there.....It said that we were all black once.... Accept it or ignore it but don't offend! OK

  • im from croatia and your a idiot, MERLIM COPIED THIS GUY; and if he came from the jungle its even more pathetic for dino merlin!

  • hey spanky489 go suck your father's balls its the only thing you can do best.

  • The chorus says "my daughter, do not follow your heart"

  • Wolof is not a dialect.

Wolof is a tribe, a etnich, a language

  • its not "endour ", its; Ndour, try to pronounce it right

  • N'Dour

  • Does anyone know what the chorus means?

  • Is there a non-live version of this song by any chance? I'm trying to figure out how similar this would be to "Godinama" with more pronounced instrumental sounds.

So far to be honest, from comparing these 2 songs, Dino may have based it off of his beat and all, but I think he also improved it considerably, assuming the non-live version of this song, doesn't amplify the instruments and beat more.

  • Yes, on his The Lion CD I believe. Just do a My Daughter search and it will lead you to the CD this cut is on. I'm trying to translate the chorus...can you help?

  • I still haven't found it. I found another one that seemed to be sung live, but what I looked for.

Unfortunately I don't understand anything he's saying other than "My Daughter", so I can't help with the translation. I think someone did it already a few pages back though. I just know the meaning of the bosnian song based off of this one. Kind of bummed me out. I thought "Godinama" was all bosnian, but nope. Oh well, at least Dino bothered to improve it, instead of just stealing it.

  • Puuuuno bolje od Merlina.

  • @TheGreatDuck

  • @emir20088002

    da, majku mu plagijatorsku jbm

  • @emir20088002 He didn't steal the whole song, just what I think to be at least the general Rhythm of the song. Dino Merlin je sam svoj :)

  • @edo11111111

For all who think he stole it,he didnt he sampled ;D Just like Goran Bregović sampled riffs :D

  • this song is not stolen...dino merlin didnt stole........

  • Voila la musique...merci Yousou Ndour!

  • Youssou N'Dour is an immensely talented singer performer.

I aim to one day go to Senegal, to the Club he plays to simply chillout and enjoy his performance!!!

  • great song.....singer from Bosnia stealed it... you can find it on ytube as: Dino Merlin - Godinama... cheers...

  • Dear miminash,

I apologise profusely for my language on the message I sent to you. I got a bit drunk last night while using my computer. I listened to that song again and I'm sorry I vented my anger upon you. The problem I'm going through in my life at present involves my daughters and my wife. On listening to that song even though I don't understand the words I became emotioally upset and I used you as a verbal punchbag. My deepest apoligies once again.

    Billy Shaw

  • Dear Minimash,

I don't understand the last bit of your message, please interpret into fuckin' proper plain fuckin' engli

sh or forevever hold your peace

  • why are u insulting? i was just helpin soo u know just be educated...we are not animals ...if u dont understand its ur buisiness

  • Dear M inimash,

    how's life in Brazil ?

  • Thanks, Minimash

  • I don't understand the language. You tell me.

  • The langage is wolof an senegalease dialect...actually the majority of senegalease speak this langage! Btw i luv youssou ndour and this retro-song...

  • Shut up

  • if you want to hear a good ripoff of this song search for Dino Merlin Godinama.

  • yeahhhh !!!

  • OMG, he was sooo young here. I love Youssou N'dour. Thanks for the throw back.

  • Danikarodrigues:

    He's saying:

"for 22 years, you'll see the ugliness in the world.

    If you have 22 years.

While 10 people are digging the graves, 10 others are burying.

What a man doesn't advice himself, he shouldn't give as advice to another man.

    By God, I trust you.

My child, you'll see a person harm his peer for the sake of fortune."

  • what is he saying in this song? anyone

  • He's singing in Wolof a dialect from Senegal

  • Language!

  • you are evrywhere i go Afriktoday.hahaha.and u are always controversial

  • @estorpai

    What do you mean?

  • never heard this song

but i assure you it sounds like a classic in angola . yeeehhaaaaa

  • the host kinda looks like David Letterman

  • brings back very good memories

  • Ugly sentiments cobenobo, got to learn to love yourself, love your roots, and love others. What can I, a white guy, do about the things my ancestors did? What, exactly am I supposed to do? I shouldn't even feel bad about it, but because of the way I was raised, I do.

  • senegal jambar

  • pass the dutchie

  • Great music... I'll always want more!! {;>

  • My brother introduced me to Salif Keita a few years ago. We were reared believing that when meeting an albino one should immediately go around the corner and spit. How wrong! One should vomit when confronted by imbecilic opinions based on fear and ignorance.

  • great music

  • its about the stupidity and ignorance among africans. It's the reason Africans are still in conflict for things that Europeans originated for them.

  • I'm not being a bigot. I'm telling the truth about EVIL people like you who need to go to HELL!

  • omg another racist retard on youtube..man if ya dont like the song its aite but dont come on youtube to write racists comments. You got serious issues. If you think african are fools y did ya click on the yousouf Ndoor video at the first place...aniway have a good day..pfffft

  • I'm not just talking about Africans, I'm talking about you European white motherfuckers that plot and assasinate and create conflicts in Africa. All the conflicts in the world such as Rwanda were created by you white Motherfuckers!

  • racist punk

  • u not likin d song dont mean its bad. but i dont blame u but ur ignorance nd lack of respesct for ur fellow kind. Y.Ndour is one of the greatest in tha world. his duets worldwide is enough acclaim. so cobenobo think b4 u comment.

  • Youssou Ndour is a world star, try to listen to his other tracks here in(youtube)He has done a lot of duet with world stars.this video should be an old one ,let say 70s or 80s

  • He was backup for Peter Gabriel singing 'your eyes'

    Fabulous!

  • Its funny sometimes to realise African_americans dont even know about thier roots LOL what was the guy(cobenobo) expecting from Youssou ndour??Did you want him to sing along the line with words like `fuck u`or `muther fucker´ before u recognise him as a singer??This is not Hip hop my friend

  • ... Okay, you preech about your concern for the HATE over in Africa, but then you go cussing at everyone else just because you don't like Youssou N'dour? AND THEN you go and say "you stupid africans"? And then you assume everyone here is African American. Not entirely. I do highly agree, though. It's terribly sad that there is such hate and warfare, and it sickens me, literally, to think of so many people dying for such reasons. But that doesn't justify your actions in these comments.

  • fuck u !!u stupid bastard go to hell!!

  • SAY what Honkie? YOU GO TO HELL!

  • cobenobo i will find you and when i do, u will regret what u said for da rest of your life...

  • De que año es este video ?

  • youssou ndour....lol you'r the man.

  • ohhh my he was so cute

  • is he dead ? wonelle?

  • he still cute as a button

  • vraimen c beau

  • dang! i haven't heard this song in ages! i luv this song

  • tjrs aussi top

  • I'm trying to find his song "The Lion".

Any one seen it on You tube?

  • Unfortunately, "The Lion" didn't have a clip. The only clip on that cd is "Shakin' The Tree" with Peter Gabriel.

  • The song doesn't have a video, but you can check "Shakin' The Tree" the duet with Peter Gabriel. It's a very good song

  • Man I wish some of you would have heard Youssou's old stuff that wasn't commercial. Like "Africa Deebeup", "Djamil", and "Absa Gueye" you would go nuts if you heard his voice back then.

  • Yeah, man. I heard those songs so many times, and they are even better than what he does right now

  • This was a TVshow that had AMAZING music & combinations of musicians. It may never happen again. I was in shock to see Yousou on way back then and VHS taped it. im amazed to see it again. Habib on drums! Habib on bass! Hiram on guitar and George Duke on keys? It sounds a lil ultra funky though and the sound guys back then didnt know the 'percussion' was the main drums.

  • what is this tv show?

  • The show was called 'Nightmusic' it was a GREAT TV show for hearing the BEST musicians... Live music. Incredible & ahead of it's time. Now we only get over-glorified garage rock bands, lip-sync and rap over CDs.

  • And the majority of the World is silently PISSED OFF because of this. ARRGGHH!

  • I never liked this arrangement of "My Daughter" (the one from The Lion), but this video is great!

Habib never disappoints. Is that Gallas on drums?!

  • No, I think it's an American dude.

  • lousindiaye is right. The drummer is AfricanAmerican: Omar Hakim, born in NYC.

Great drummer who also played with Weather Report/Joe Zawinul & Jaco & Wayne Shorter, Sting etc. He was in the 'house band' on this show, led by David Sandborn-sax player/host. They were playing w/Yousou's guys on the show.

  • trop véridique sound

  • What a good sound. Thankyou.

  • This is my all time favorite song of Youssou N'dour! Of course, Habib faye (bass) is brilliant as ever. I love the clip! Thanks for Sharing.

  • badoubass the bassplayer is habib faye..a very good bassplayer the same jaco pastorius style.

  • I've searched for a video of Youssour singing "My Daughter" for a lonnng time--Thanks!

  • Wow very good he is the greatest.

  • Great video! I can see the bassplayer, but he sounds like Habib Faye. Great sound!

  • IT IS HABIB
