very few (if any VCRs) back then so I audio taped the movie (and the CBS LM bumpers) onto 2 cassette tapes and used to listen to those tapes and "rewatch" the movie in my head. (I still have those tapes stuck in a box somewhere.). Anyway, I became a lifelong FP fan after that night. Do you have any idea what year that was-- 1977 maybe?
The EXACT thing happened to me! It's interesting how people who do not know each other and who live (most likely) in different parts of the country could have been so intrigued by a seemingly commonplace event over 30 years ago and that our memories of that night remain so imprinted that we both felt like sharing that experience. That night was the first time I had ever seen "Forbidden Planet," although my father had been telling me for years what a great movie it was. There w
I remember this when I saw " Forbidden Planet " for the first time. It was late on Friday and I was hanging out with Doug Eitel. The movie blew me away, and I'll always remember that evening when I hear this music. Thanks!
Yup, Like everyone says. Brings back old memories of my childhood. Also, like one of the other comments written, it to reminds me of watching these late night movies with my late dad. Which is why it's such a treasure! Thanx for the memories!
Been listening to the NBC, ABC movie of the week themes when I came across this. Unexpected time travel experience. Good to be a kid again, even if just for a few seconds. Thank You :)
Love this! What a great memory from the 70's! I was a kid then, I use to stay up and watch all the great movies they aired and remember this movie bumper...it seems like yesterday. NEVER take this off of YouTube! I'm sure it brings back so many great memories for alot of people including myself. Thanks for posting it!
Damn, I miss these times! I used to love staying up late watching these fun movies as a kid. I especially remember watching "Bermuda Depths" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". The memories are priceless.
@cheapcape I hear ya! I also have so many good memories associated with this bumper. It brings me back to the sitting up late at night with my late father and watching these great movies in our basement.
@cheapcape MJ was never proven innocent u clown the case was dropped; but, after he overdrawn his bank accounts, that reviled how over the years millions were paid out to random family's which 100% of them had at the time young boys that stayed at NeverLand ranch funny that!!!!!

The 1966-71 theme seems a lot more peculiar, Than the 1971-78 theme. I wonder why the other one hasn't been played or shown on YouTube as of yet?. It's scarier, But classic.
suddenly I'm 10 years old, and I can stay up late because it's Thanksgiving Eve and there's no school, and my mom is up chopping up fixings and mixing pies to pop into the oven first thing in the morning. I even remember the movie: "The Doberman Gang"!
@smichelle65 I remember watching this intro on friday nights. I remember I was allowed to stay up as late as I wanted on Friday and Saturday nights. Funny thing is, no matter how late I stayed up on Friday night I was always up at the crack of dawn for one reason and one reason only - Saturday Morning Cartoons. I'm now 45 and on occassion I still like to watch the odd bugs bunny cartoon every now and then...
@richardthewriter Oh yeah I remember it was a treat for me too! Every Friday night it seemed there was a Jerrry Lewis movie on and I was allowed to stay up and yup I was up in time for Saturday morning cartoons too! and yeah I curl up with my kids to watch The same cartoons i watched when i was a kid on the retro toon channel!
@cheapcape when did we get old? it literally just feels like this was on tv yesterday and I would look forward to friday because it was the weekend and I could go out and play with my friends all day Saturday. Now I look in the mirror and the guy with wrinkles and grey thinning hair and the ponch and who thinks rock music is too loud I don't recognize. But on the upside I get to look forward to supper at 4 pm (okay I'm not that old just yet hahaha).

Born in 1967, childhood memories of that summer staying with my cousin. Up til 3:00 in the morning. Remember this blaring out of the TV set. So many years to go by so fast. Wow.

They used to have movie night two times a week then didn't they? Now with all the movie channels on cable they don't ever show any movies on CBS except the hallmark hall of fame.
This theme always made me feel safe to fall asleep. When I heard this, I knew my dad was done raping me and my little brother for the evening and he was gonna pass out in front of the tv.
good god , i wish they would bring late night movies. i never cared that much for carson or leno, or late night talk shows. the icing on the cake are the infomercials.
@farmerne Get yourself a good audio capture program that can save in MP3 format. Save the file, move it to your phone, and voila! You have a ringtone!
I listen to this and suddenly I am transported back to 1975. When I was 20 and my girlfriend and I were watching the latest Peter Cushing/Chris Lee vampire film to premier on the CBS Late Movie. And she would hold me tight during the scary parts.
Do you know this almost makes me cry? I'd forgotten about this bumper. If anyone knows who the composer was, I'd be interested. KLXT, thanks a bunch for taking my heart back to a "simpler" time. ;)
@wannawatchu66: Many thanks. Does indeed sound like Stevens, who liked French horn (the melody here) and high trumpet work (the CBS Late Movie and Hawaii Five-O main themes). This was a new arrangement of the Late Movie theme, so I wonder if he composed the original as well (this was after the "Syncopated Clock").
Holy shit ... when I stumbled onto this one I was taken back to crummy UHF receivers, small color televisions and being yelled at for staying up too late. I loved it!
@thefirefighter2011 Same composer, IIRC. For some reason, I kinda identify that one moreso with the "And now, this message" closing bumpers nearing the end of the show.
I always thought that piece had such a warm, reassuring quality to it. I thought cable TV would be fun. Nah, I'd rather have the days of the three\ networks and an independent.
Yeah, I also liked the old independent, usually UHF stations but even many network affiliates from the time the soap operas and game shows ended until the 6 PM news came on, they might have had kid's programming or run syndicated shows, perhaps a movie. I miss those days.
Does any one remember the bumper for the CBS Early Movie? It had a really jazzy sounding score and was basically just a bunch of still from classic movies flashing on the screen? I remember seeing it in the early or mid 70's
@torresongs2 - Someone once put up "The Early Show" open in question (from KNXT, now KCBS-TV in Los Angeles; with the theme music being Johnny Pearson's "Power Drive" as heard on some 1967-70 "Spider-Man" cartoon episodes and as the theme to the Australian cop series "Division 4"), but it was long ago taken off YT. 'Twas never used, from what I could tell, by WCBS-TV in New York.
Greatest Late Night BIG 3 Network bumper of all time ,first used on Monday night Feb 14 1972 If im not mistaken ( 1st movie aired in this slot "a patch of blue")! Will Never tire of this clip!
They also repeated "The Dirty Dozen", "House Of Dark Shadows", as well as other movies that were previously seen on "The C.B.S. Thursday Night Movie" and "The C.B.S. Friday Night Movie".
This is a rearranged version of the original theme, first used in the 1971-72 season for all of C.B.S.' prime time movie shows, and of course, this one, which replaced the cancelled "The Merv Griffin Show".
FINALLY!!!!!!!! I have been looking for this for SO long! I remember hearing this from the living room as a kid, my dad watching late night movies ... I'd hear this ALL THE TIME! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!
I remember being a kid and hearing that music and thinking "boy, that's some odd music". But I still liked it, and today I still savor it because of its strangeness, and the sweet seventies memories it evokes. Thanks for posting. A blast from the past.
Reminds me of staying up past midnight in the summer, and the freaky movies they showed. Wonder if anyone has the bumper from the same era with the alternate music.
Brings back memories hearing this. The 70's was a great decade to be a kid. If I could go back... I would buy boxes & boxes of baseball cards especially from 1971 and would keep all the packs unopened. Then, I wouldn't have to work today because I'd have a fortune. They used to be .10 cents a pack or just $2.40 a box back then. Cringe
Wow, just hearing that makes me feel like a kid. Thankyou for posting. I love the 70's, wish I could go back. Of course, I'd have to take my wife with me, or it wouldn't be as much fun.
I remember the Friday night CBS Late Movie - it came on just after Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
One night a buddy of mine spent the night at our home, and we watched the Night Stalker, and the movie that followed it was a creepy, cheesey 70's flick called The Devil's Rain, starring Bill "Priceline Negotiator" Shatner, and Earnest "Dominic Santini" Borgnine.
The main hero of the flick was Eddie "Green Acres" Albert.
Oh yeah, well I remember to well going over to my friends house to spend the night, The Night Stalker came on & it was the episode about the zombie he had to sew his mouth shut in the back of a hearse, my friend had to piss so bad but he just stood there in cramps of agony watching this part waiting for the zombie to open it's eyes, funny stuff.
There were two variants of the bumpers. I always hated seeing/hearing the last one...it told me that the movie was almost over and it was time to go to bed.
Shit is so much different these days. In those days television station used to shut down and go off the air. When you saw this bumper it was pretty much one of the RARE times out the week you could actually see a movie lol. God, I miss those days.
Ditto!, To what KidAJonn said. This was like music to my ears. It was so comforting to hear it. These things had more of an impact on me than I knew. Just look at the ends of my vids. Its evident.
This bumper usually played during the movie {when the network staff announcer said something like, "We will return to 'THE ZORCH THAT ATE CLEVELAND', starring Alan Alda..."}, and usually ended the "LATE MOVIE" before the CBS I.D. around 1:30am(et).
totally thinking ringtone - but i'd never answer the phone because i love that short phrase of music. I remember being a kid watching tv late at nite... I have to call that comfort music - it affects my ears the same way a great plate of meatloaf and mashed potatoes does. It's like coming home. so if that were my ring tone, id be in a timewarp trance or something.
Have you seen the G4 network "movies that don't suck" sequences? They are absolutely created as a nod to those former days - the "retro" look of the old slit scan graphics. I have no talent in after effects but im learning. I'd love to try to recreate that magic. But the main ingredient in that magic is time.
KLXT77, a lot of people say that this theme was scary...I saw it as freedom. The freedom to stay up late and watch a movie and not have to worry about school the next morning. It made me feel like a grownup (on Friday nights or summertime)
Friday nights and I remember the old Hammer horror films starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing,

I remember being a kid and hearing that music and thinking "boy, that's some odd music". But I still liked it, and today I still savor it because of its strangeness, and the sweet seventies memories it evokes. Thanks for posting. A blast from the past.

,,just a little hint for you my friend, just watch this over & over then later report back to me as to what happened.

I caught Kubrick's "Lolita" on the CBS Late Movie back in 1979. I was 15 and loved it.
mikey42 2 years ago 4
I think that was the television debut of "Lolita" (or at least the debut was some time earlier on the CBS Late Movie).
smithaires 2 years ago
@smithaires Wow, funny you should say that! I watched "Lolita" for the first time on the CBS Late Movie. It was the summer of 1979.
mikey42 1 year ago

You have brought joy to countless numbers with this!

I remember watching ( The Night Stalker & The Norlis Tapes ) Damn that was over 30yrs ago.
punkytoad98 3 years ago
I remember the Friday night CBS Late Movie - it came on just after Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
One night a buddy of mine spent the night at our home, and we watched the Night Stalker, and the movie that followed it was a creepy, cheesey 70's flick called The Devil's Rain, starring Bill "Priceline Negotiator" Shatner, and Earnest "Dominic Santini" Borgnine.
The main hero of the flick was Eddie "Green Acres" Albert.
jpowell180 3 years ago 2
Oh yeah, well I remember to well going over to my friends house to spend the night, The Night Stalker came on & it was the episode about the zombie he had to sew his mouth shut in the back of a hearse, my friend had to piss so bad but he just stood there in cramps of agony watching this part waiting for the zombie to open it's eyes, funny stuff.

...and also there was a very young John Travolta in that movie!

There were two variants of the bumpers. I always hated seeing/hearing the last one...it told me that the movie was almost over and it was time to go to bed.
vinylrecord68 3 years ago
Wow, this brings me back. Friday nights after the MASH re-run, CBS would run one of my all-time favorite horror movies. Thanks for posting.
Eggman961 3 years ago 2
One of the great bumpers of all time. Maybe stuff like this could be extra content on vintage tv show dvds.
tvengr4047 3 years ago
Shit is so much different these days. In those days television station used to shut down and go off the air. When you saw this bumper it was pretty much one of the RARE times out the week you could actually see a movie lol. God, I miss those days.
therealrebelxd 3 years ago
Ditto!, To what KidAJonn said. This was like music to my ears. It was so comforting to hear it. These things had more of an impact on me than I knew. Just look at the ends of my vids. Its evident.
therealrebelxd 3 years ago 2
wow i remember this when i was little. I would be in my bed late at night and i would hear this bumper during commercial breaks from the other room.
KidAJonni 3 years ago 2
This bumper usually played during the movie {when the network staff announcer said something like, "We will return to 'THE ZORCH THAT ATE CLEVELAND', starring Alan Alda..."}, and usually ended the "LATE MOVIE" before the CBS I.D. around 1:30am(et).

I love that music. I may cut and chop it and do something with it.

me 2,,,maybe a ringtone is in order ?,,,,or a movie, I'll contact Oliver Stone.
CreativeCritisizm 3 years ago
totally thinking ringtone - but i'd never answer the phone because i love that short phrase of music.

But the main ingredient in that magic is time.
bruhe 3 years ago
I did a voice-over for this intro just before I went to work for a CBS affiliate radio station in Tulsa. It felt wonderful.

KLXT77, a lot of people say that this theme was scary...I saw it as freedom. The freedom to stay up late and watch a movie and not have to worry about school the next morning. It made me feel like a grownup (on Friday nights or summertime)
Thanks a bunch!
OreckBoy1 3 years ago
If you watch this over and over I think it will take you to that freakish place where everything is white and people are living in the 19th century.

Where'd you find this on 35mm?
TServo2049 3 years ago
I can't recall where this came from. As you can see, it's a little damaged and the green has faded, but it still looks and sounds fairly good.
