@zeeshangtk if u can run windows you can run Linux Mint i recommended you get Linux Mint 12 KDE it take a little bit more ram than regaler Linux os but not as much as windows and it stable more stable than the normal 12 and the rolling release the is rolling out of date cheak out my video
@InfinitelyGalactic Mint 11 KDE is actually going to be built on top of Linux Mint Debian Edition. And they're holding off on a couple things such as them changing the update system around and making another new spin in the next month.
to be honest with you, is mandatory install Linux Mint (or any other Linux distro, Mandrake, Ubuntu, etc)
but you need to know how to move as a basic user with linux first, to reach your expectations covered and not frustrate with first times in Linux. Linux could be a great experience to enjoy, but you need to know more than a basic Windows user to feel the best of freedom, enjoy!
@continente1998 if you install Linux of any kind, I recomend you to keep Windows and do a dual boot, so you can play your windows games on windows, don't ask me why, just do it that way
@continente1998 if u can run windows you can run Linux Mint i recommended you get Linux Mint 12 KDE it take a little bit more ram than regaler Linux os but not as much as windows and it stable more stable than the normal 12 and the rolling release the is rolling out of date cheak out my video
@InfinitelyGalactic wow, i wonted to ask same question, but i didnt expect that answer. i have never tried pardus, but i just might!! is it really that good? i've tried mint, and i loved it!! im more of a gnome fan thou.. i just have to try pardus. @313hummer Yep, I know KDE 4 = the inspiration for Windows Vista and 7. Oh, well...I guess we can't all innovate. Sometimes we just have to borrow a few things.
@kakaroto1986 Yup. Go to synaptic and install 'kde-plasma-dekstop' for a minimal KDE experience, or install 'kubuntu-desktop' for all of the KDE apps as well as the desktop. Then you can choose between them at the login screen. Good luck!
Can you help me pls i installed Linux Mint 10 KDE on a dual boot pc with Windows 7 but i dont like it and i want to remove it can you tell me how previously i had Ubuntu 10.10 and i removed it with wubi bit mint 10 kde doesnt have wubi and i dont now what to do ?
@NikolaGB Yup, it's simple. In Win7 click Start>right click 'Computer'>Manage>Disk Management and then right click the partition that Linux Mint created and select 'Delete'. Make sure it's the right on though 'cause otherwise you could delete precious data.
Have a look at this...it might help: /watch?v=uUgf84bdYvg
I hate KDE 4 because I tried it before and it was like KDE developers are blind or something; very large fonts and taskbar entries truncated (e.g.: Mozila Fir...) not cool. I didn't like the design overall, well some people actually like it so I can't say its terrible.
@henz103 Yep, I see your point. Depending on the distro, I have noticed really weird inconsistencies with KDE4, but then again, you can customize those elements, but it's annoying.
@InfinitelyGalactic my pleasure for the sub. Thank you for the tip on the icon set. It looks fabulous. After I learn How to make a video I will post it for you to see how it looks and feels on my netbook. I am still new to Linux Distros and have learned a lot in a short period of time. I have noticed that the customization is not like Ubuntu but of course this Distro isn't Ubuntu.:) Keep on teaching my new friend.
I just installed Linux Mint 10 on my Acer Aspire One Netbook ZG5 and so far it works great. It is fast and clean. As I am still new to Linux Distros this one seems to work well with my small netbook. My KDE is a lot different in looks than this one in the video. I subscribed to your channel as I find this intel very useful. Keep up the great work!
@FishmanJames Yes, KDE on a netbook is different. KDE automatically figures out your on a smaller screen, so it activates the 'search and launch' interface. Bigger buttons, and more centralized social stuff. I think the netbook version of KDE looks gorgeous, but I don't have netbook to try it on. :-) I'm glad it works well for you. You should search for the 'Faenza KDE icon set'. It looks simply amazing when applied to KDE. Good luck, and thanx for the sub!
Whenever I use Firefox on Mint 10 KDE, sometimes when I type, it doesn't disappear completely and it's misleading. Other than that, it's a bit slow after boot-up and it takes a while for it to become stable otherwise it slows down immensely in the first minute. Kubuntu was faster, though...
@theif519 I don't know what could be causing the trouble there, you could try installing Firefox 4, and see if that improves anything. But as far as the startup speed goes, sometimes the KDE login sound doesn't go off for another ten seconds after logging in. I don't know what causes that. I recently installed the stable version (not the RC shown in the vid) and it was too buggy for me to keep. If you want a good KDE distro, try Pardus 2011 or openSUSE 11.4. Both are fairly bug-free distros.
you really think that 690mb of RAM is lite???? that's funny dude. lol.
I use Gnome with all the bells and whistles, watching your video right now in firefox, and i am using less than that...
FYI: the kernel, drivers and schedulers provide more of the smooth desktop experience, the WM shouldn't make a huge difference, in themselves, with the exception of compositors, but ya Kwin has been always a bit laggy, so that is good to hear it's been improved.
@triplesquarednine For a 64-bit OS that is pretty light, esp. for KDE4. By comparison, 64-bit Gnome Mint edition with docky and a global menu uses 'bout 860 MB of 4 GB when completely idol. On my system, this system is snappy, and due to the complete rewrite of Kwin, the effects are fluid and thus the effects & desktop are very responsive. Considering Kubuntu 10.10 uses the same kernel and drivers etc. and was slow as __, I think KDE 4.6 & Kwin is the reason for the speed. Thx. for the comment
@InfinitelyGalactic ya, I am running a 64bit distro, i know they require more overhead. As far as Mint-gnome ~ that is absolutely brutal, if that was the case. I run gnome, compiz++(fully loaded), dockbarX and Jackd as my default sound API (which has overhead!). I also have a tmpfs setup for FireFox4 (which is extra RAM). so it boggles my mind that Mint's gnome edition is that bad. however, i do agree, if Kwin has been totally overhauled, that would explain it.
@InfinitelyGalactic Oh, and when Archlinux64/gnome boots, 340mg RAM. after using it for a while then closing all applications, it sits around 400-420mg RAM, CPU idles between 0.3-1%.
(that's why i was so surprised when you said that!)
@triplesquarednine Yep, that's light! My CPU idles at nothing as well, and there's no slowness in the system at all, that's just the way Mint is running for me at the moment. Not complaining mind you. I've also run openSUSE x64 Gnome on here with a similar config. and it idles @ 580 MB after using it for a few hours, so it varies I think. Anyway, nice talking with you! :-)
Although with Pardus... from what I have experienced... there are not alot of packages... and no mention of 3rd party repos.......... correct me if i am wrong.... do you know of any that slipped by me?
@Linux4UnMe Nope, you're absolutely right. Pardus has a limited package selection, which is a shame, but as a desktop, Mint 10 KDE and Pardus run very close as competitors, but I would say that Pardus wins because of its professional wizards and stability. Thanks for the comment.
yer.... I don't know why they would bother putting so much effort into their Distro with the Wizards etc only to have their users restricted as to what software they can easily install on it. It's retarded.... Makes the whole distro worthless in the end.... so my vote goes to Mint on this one :)
@zXJulianXz No worries. Right-click the 'start' button, and click 'Remove from panel' or 'Delete' etc, then right click a blank space on the panel/bar and click 'Add Widgets', that isn't there mouseover 'Panel options' and then click 'Add Widgets'. Then in the widget bar that pops up, search for 'menu' and there should be something like KDE menu classic, Launcelot menu, classic menu etc. Then pick your favorite, and click-and-drag it onto the right place on the bottom bar where the old menu was.
@BeerIndependence4All Hi there, if you need help I'll send you a message with a link to the Mint Forums on how to install it over the top OpenO(racle)ffice.
I tried Kubuntu 11.04 Alpha 2 and Mint 10 KDE and I have to say that on my system (AMD X2, 2GB RAM, HD3650 gfx) Kubuntu blitzed it. True that as of Alpha 2 proprietary driver support is currently broken but still Kubuntu performed far better than Mint and left me wondering why Mint 10 KDE is so horribly slow and laggy, and not to mention buggy... Kubuntu lacks some of the additional software and polish of Mint, but makes up for it in spades in performance. Kubuntu is the ugly duckling no more.
do someone else has problem with ASUS P7P55d and Linux? I tried ubuntu 10.04, 10.10; linux mint 9, 10; fedora 13, 14; mandriva 2010, 2011 (gnome and kde). In all of them ps2 port mouse and keyboard freezes after few minutes.
@evirtual You could try booting live-cds with 'acpi=off' options, or running in verbose "text mode" to see what's going wrong. Or, just get a ps2-usb adapter or even a new keyboard? Anyway, see if that helps. Thanks for posting. :-)
Try playing hd videos with hardware acceleration in pardus.....You cant enable vdpau in smplayer. In mint everything works. And come on seriously, no conky in pardus??
@lamondaforestry Everything didn't work in Mint for me. VLC and Gnome player (why Gnome player anyway?) both crash too much. You have to click on a wallpaper then click OK twice to actually get the wallpaper to change. Had sound sync problems that made games (my fave being Tremulous) unplayable. KDE SC 4.6 was slow and laggy (a Mint problem not KDE). Pretty much the only things I was happy about was that Mint automatically gives GRUB a nice background for dual boot, and ATI/AMD graphics work.
@Keruaran Each to their own, (P.S. Opensuse 11.4's KDE 4.6 performance is excellent! On my hardware anyway. But unless you want a solid business-type distro, don't bother downloading it. It's much more hassle to set up, and the Gnome edition still looks like 11.2!) Pardus is still the best KDE distro, IMHO. Peace out!
@lamondaforestry That's alright. Always use what works best for you. No need to go with what some dude on the internet (me!) says. That's the best thing about Linux distros! Peace out! :-)
@tostoday Ooh, that's a tough one, I still seem to be defaulting back to Ubuntu 10.10 but in the flavor of Pinguy OS, just because it takes me less time to strip back some of the bloat than reinstall everything on top of regular Ubuntu. But, I am still using Mint 10 KDE and it's staying on my system as well...for the meantime anyway. Good question. And your main OS is XP or 7? Most people seem to be one or the other - not sure there's any Vista users left on the planet! Peace out.
@islamisnuts Yep, I know the feeling. Nothing seems to top Pardus now, which is a good thing because Pardus doesn't do releases very often...so when they do you know it's gonna be good. :-)
@91Chanito Wine, Xbmc are both in the Repos... You'll be back. Add this Repo and you'll have all kinds of software. pakete.pardususer.de/pardus-2011/i686/ pisi-index.xml.xz
I've been waiting for Mint10K release for a while now, thanks for the video. I've been trying to see if i can finally move on over to KDE but its been hard. Gnome is so comfortable for me which i started using back in the Ubuntu 4 days. I dunno why but KDE seemed almost childish or too flashy for me, but it has been maturing nicely over time and I'm really being attracted to it. Hopefully 4.6 does it for me because all the new features seem nice.
@dynetrax Yes, KDE always seemed too blingy for me, but it's good that they've refined it so much that it's starting to look professional and usable. And the performance is there now too. So I'm trying to use KDE more, as I don't know if I'll like Gnome 3, and I'm not sure about Unity. So the alternatives are not so bad now.

I'm surprised how fast KDE is when your turn your desktop effects off and it still looking snazzy
meoweo 1 year ago
@meoweo That is a good point. KDE is way faster when you turn the effects off.

@meoweo Try the latest alpha of Kubuntu 11.04. You will be surprised how fast and smooth KDE is when your desktop effects are ON!

I guess you like this one, what's your main distro now?
tostoday 1 year ago
@tostoday Ooh, that's a tough one, I still seem to be defaulting back to Ubuntu 10.10 but in the flavor of Pinguy OS, just because it takes me less time to strip back some of the bloat than reinstall everything on top of regular Ubuntu. But, I am still using Mint 10 KDE and it's staying on my system as well...for the meantime anyway. Good question. And your main OS is XP or 7? Most people seem to be one or the other - not sure there's any Vista users left on the planet! Peace out.

@InfinitelyGalactic My desktop is XP with Linux Mint. One laptop with Win 7, other laptop with Zorin 4 and XP.

After using Pardus 2011, I wont use anything else.... but that's just me.
islamisnuts 1 year ago
@islamisnuts Yep, I know the feeling. Nothing seems to top Pardus now, which is a good thing because Pardus doesn't do releases very often...so when they do you know it's gonna be good. :-)

@islamisnuts and im changing from pardus to mint now hehe, missing to mutch software in pardus like wine, xbmc etc.
91Chanito 1 year ago

Hopefully 4.6 does it for me because all the new features seem nice.
dynetrax 1 year ago
@dynetrax Yes, KDE always seemed too blingy for me, but it's good that they've refined it so much that it's starting to look professional and usable. And the performance is there now too. So I'm trying to use KDE more, as I don't know if I'll like Gnome 3, and I'm not sure about Unity. So the alternatives are not so bad now.
