My "Spiritual" Experience

I'm with you Ooposhoo. You can't really imagine the ocean if you've spent your entire life in the forest. I too unexpectedly had a profound spiritual experience at the age of 28, was atheist or agnostic, and was never the same again. There is no way anyone who had such an experience could not have a paradign shift in thinking--in fact the experience IS the paradigm shift. I don't know what experiences religious people have, because I'm not religious.

That story has nothing to do with spiritual experience..... that is definitely emotions and chemical highs in the brain. Spiritual experiences are profound changes in the understanding of ourselves and others and all things. If you are the same person after the experience than it was a high, if you are a totally different person as a result of information infused into your every senew..... then you've had an spiritual experience.

@o0POSH0o You are 100% correct, a valid spiritual experience for an atheist would be a spiritual awakening and they would not BE atheist any longer. They would experience a paradigm shift in their thinking, defiance would disappear. They would be a new creature.

I had a spiritual experience over 10 yrs ago, I was atheist.

But an atheist can certainly be spiritual in their nature. They just have difficulty letting go of self.

The thing I wonder is how you can proclaim with certainty that what you felt on those occasions was NOT God. Does it not also depend on how we define God? More modern people are fairly receptive to the idea of a life force that connects us. If you analyze deeper and try to lay aside your desire to proclaim that there is no God, just keeping an open mind, why is it that people at mass meetings experience these things? The 'awe' and 'rapture' that you're talking about, Itzip, when it gets very intense you might be tempted to personify it, because you as a person are grateful for being taken out of yourself to that which you're in awe of. Btw, what's a natural phenomenon? Something that can be explained? Nothing can be explained. Everything, seen in its proper perspective, is awe-inspiring.

fair enough observations. you could same the same about political rallies, for example, Nuremburg 1933, when Hitler undoubtedly created "religious/spiritual" rapture for his followers.

My only thought about the awe you experienced at the rock concert and in the Alps is that without God, there would have been no mountain or people to create that great music. Also, I'm not sure you've described a spiritual experience, only an emotional one.

I had my spiritual experience in bed laying alone in prayer, that was sincere and came from my heart.... the biggest thing you can prove Jesus's existence by is the accuracy of prophecy, that CANNOT be debunked

Even as a believer in God's existence I must say this guy is spot on, even flawless, with his understanding of "spiritual" encounters being emotional and a thing of the mind, rather than being from a god. However, I don't believe this disproves the existence of a Creator. Also, I don't find a natural evolving universe contradict the Biblical creation account, since I interpret Genesis to be a record of the main and relevant epochs(days) describing the natural formation of the universe.

how do people have experiences such as going to hell, spiritual world, heaven, when they have never known.

Can you define for me what a "spirit" is? Or where it is? Or what it does?

Personally i think the spirit or soul is a ridiculous idea. Yet, I have purpose. I try to make life for myself and those I love as comfortable as possible. I help the needy. I try to educate. I have lots of purpose in my life, thank you very much. And none of it came from vague undefined ideas that no one can prove or even provide a simple argument for.

@roont Sure, what is spirit you ask? 500characters is not many to describe. Look at body. Body of human is copy and shadow of what is in the spiritual world. Meaning Spiritual body, looks like physical body, although... our physical bodies are not as amazing. so, spirit has gender, arms and legs, whole thing looks similar but just copy and shadow/reflection. In reality spirit is more real than our bodies. physical bodies last 100yrs or so, spiritual bodies are ment to last for eternity... :)

Stop being so negative please, should really get taught, learn to learn. everyone should learn from one another, no1 is the same and no1 can feel or sense or have the same experiences as someone else. you say no when you dont know, thats funny. you should just say u dont know and learn, then you can be happy.
