  • Shawn - you're my online teacher. Q: Even if you plant correctly on the front leg, don't you still need to counterbalance the swinging of the arms \with, say, the butt (in the squat?) or by slightly leaning back? We need to self-preservate. :) Roy

  • Shawn...I took this tip to the range yesterday...UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Crushed each shot...No bad shots...EFFORTLESS!!!!!! I always had trouble with my weight shift and this is such an easy way to do it and remember it!

  • Hi Shawn,

I've been watching your videos these past few weeks and you've emphasised greatly on instinctive golf. I used to have a problem with my weight shift but after watching your videos, I just decided to lift my right foot earlier so that I instinctively shift my weight to my left side or else my right toe would be crush or I'd fall down etc.. Just wondering if this is the way to go? Obviously I only do this when I'm having weight shift problems. Thanks Shawn, your videos are awesome

  • @loopop2 Weight shift problems towards the target come directly from focus! You need to see my "Ridiculously Easy; Shawn Clement" videos; and see also "Listen for Focus; Shawn Clement" which will help you there; As for the right foot up; not a good idea; see "Anchor your swing; Shawn Clement" and "Braced Power Tilt; Shawn Clement"; BTW, you really need to get my DVD series which will really help you cut through all the BS; Shawn

  • Finaly I found the piece I was missing in my golf swing, this video and the hips one helped me

a lot to put everything together. Thank you

  • Shawn - when the left hip turns "back to the wall" at the beginning of the downswing, is the purpose of that to pull on the arm-club-unit or is the purpose simply to get out of the way? My guess is the latter. Have watched hundreds of your videos and have improved quite a bit - Thanks!

  • @roytubby Many of my videos are for the understanding; then you rehearse a few times and get an idea of the feel; then I want you to turn it over to the instincts and they will do the rest; the next step for you is to re-inforce your action to target; whether it is using the hammer analogy or the fishing, or baseball etc (which I have a video on each) and then making sure that your focus is on the delivery of that action into the picture you have envisioned for the shot; continued...

  • @roytubby And to answer your question, yes! But this happens only if you are focused on a target! You are already wired for success in this area; please see "Ridiculously easy; shawn clement", "How to focus; shawn clement" and "farm hammer; shawn..." Shawn My new training video is coming out this week as well so stay tuned!

  • When I make the shift from the backswing to the downswing my arms are pulled down by a few inches (by this shift move) and THEN and only THEN do the arms fall through the swing.. Your demo swing does not show any movement in the arms or club when you make the first fall move. Can you comment?

  • Shawn, how do you plant the left foot when you don't lift it off the ground, as I noticed you take it off slightly. My overall goal is to learn to get my hands ahead at impact by maintaining my wrist angles. Please help me out thanks love your videos!!

  • @LBos11 Hey Hey! Well to do that, you need the right focus and this is to feel a very distinct action of release in the direction you want the ball to start; see "ridiculously easy; shawn clement", "hammer through; Shawn ...", "Farm Hammer; Sh...", "Fishing and golf", "How to release the arm club unit", "Throwing the club" is a good start;

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw Thank you for the reply! I have been playing junior golf competetively for about 3 years now and have had success but now I am making sure I'm hitting it correctly :) Love the videos

  • Sorry I was trying to watch your video, but I got distracted by the hot steamy yoga on the right side of the page.

  • Hello Shawn. I want To thank you for your'e Lessons. I try To imitate your swing. it looks ands feels naturel and Logic. It is à pitty you do not practice in Holland. John from Utrecht

  • your videos and teaching techniques are by far the best i have seen :) i am a total novice with about 10 trips to the range and half a dozen trips to the course , i can hit around the 200 yard mark with my 4 iron 3 wood and driver ( all about the same ) is this normal ? bearing in mind i have like a 50/50 success rate of down the middle lol, watching and repeating what you do in you vids makes it all so much easier to understand . regards james

  • I've been taking Shawn's teachings to the range and the course. I'm really pleased with the results. Johnny Miller says that most senior golfers, like myself, don't make a proper hip turn. Shawn is very clear about getting the posterior to turn toward the target, as it performs its function as a counter weight. Than I added his perpetual motion drill to toss fall - fall and whammo I hit my 3-wood from a previous longest of 205 to 233. Boy did that feel good. Get Shawn's DVD Series well worth it.

  • very good,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, i have been a golfer for over 20 years and all ways shot in the hi to mid 90,s i have been looking at your vid,s for a week or so and went to the range with it and lo and behold after the week was over i played in our church golf tournament and shot a real 72 and came in 2 place only to a 69 that came in 1st . so i am convinced that your teaching is not theory it realy works thanks shawn

  • I am S T U N N E D ! This is the single best piece of golfswingadvice i have seen i my entire f-ing golflife.... I have no words really to tell you Sir how much I have struggled with this weightshiftstuff... and all of a sudden everything falls in place...for a compulsive golfaddict like myself this the last piece that was missing in the puzzle that I´ve been looking for for almost twenty years. I bow my head and congratulates you Shawn Clement and will recomend you for a knighthood ! Amazing !

  • Absolute gold....the fall by keeping it behind you really helped me to avoid getting trapped and all of a sudden I have all this room to swing through, cheers Shawn

  • The braced tilt...... how come i've been struggling for years. This is the best advice i have tried EVER. The only problem i still have is with the driver. I hit all clubs solid now but still slice my driver, dont get it, can you help.

  • FUCKING BRILLIANT. I know that weight shifting is a crucial factor in a golf swing. But recently i have been hitting slices and its kinda hard for me to do an in-out golf swing. Whenever I force myself to do it, I top the ball. Now I get it .. I have been transferring the weight from OUTSIDE..

  • chickin wing city lol

  • I have this lesson on auto repeat- this is the clearest teaching on weight shift I ever experienced. I am itching to get on the range for a bucket and then a twilight run through to see how I intergrated

  • What kind of jerk dislikes this video?

  • Shawn, starting the transition from the top, the "feeling" I am getting is that the right hip initially is moving on an ever so slight diagonal to the ball/target line (i.e forward and right) which causes the arms to drop down on an inside path. I know I may not actually be going "diagonal" but that is the "feeling" I have. Is this correct?

  • The penny has finally dropped, The one leg drill is very enlightening, practice at the driving range first then come back and watch this video again along with the Takeaway Toss first video, I coulnt believe the difference in my accuracy. Can't wait to to have a game at the weekend now. cheers shawn.

  • Great job with these videos they've been a massive help to my game. I was just wondering why, just before to take your backswing, you cock you right knee inwards? Is this just and idiosyncrasy of your swing or is there some method to it?

  • Thanks for the explanation. I was thinking to myself while watching your other clips that you have a dip in your downswing that would cause me to hit fat shots. I will have to give this a try. Do you ever travel and give clinics? I'm in the RTP area of North Carolina. If you ever travel to Pinehurst area again, I would be most interested in taking a lesson.

  • Shawn's videos have absolutely helped me. I'm tipping him each month now and all of you guys should too! I will buy the DVDs soon, Shawn. Thank you for your generosity.

  • Shawn great video on the downswing, Get's players on the right swing path as well. Job well done.

  • yeah ok but your shoulders dip..... i dont get it

  • Excellent. I am going to try this next round. Thanks for posting your videos. It is much appreciated.

  • Outstanding video Shawn, thanks very much for posting ALL the stuff you do. It's great to see someone with such genuine enthusiasm giving us hacks some hope with easy to understand, non gobbledygook instruction. Wish we had someone like you in Perth. Cheers mate!

  • Since i've watched your video's, for about 6 months now...I have to honestly say my game has improved. Thank you and keep it popping!!!!!!!!

  • Shawn, love the videos! But i have to be honest,,,i am also a golf pro(Glen Cove Golf Club) and i use your teachings in my own teaching,

How would i join your forum?

  • Great technique video and my golf buddy owes you a lot cos he's a big fan and can almost play to his 16 handicap since he discovered shawn last year. But I just wanna hit a 7 iron straight ;-(

  • @mjmtaf LOL; there is your problem!! Trying to hit it straight!! Did you ever see a straight shot on the PGA Tour trackman? very very rare!! See my video on this and get my dvd series!! the video title is "Work the ball; Shawn Clement" part 1 and part 2. You will understand that a shot that looks straight is either a straight draw or a straight fade...Jack was one guy who used to say all the time that the hardest shot to hit was a straight one because you are dealing with an arc!

  • @clemshaw Hi from Ireland. Thanks for post. I am playing for 20 years & got down to 10 cos of my short game. I hit 2 to 5 greens in regulation. I work the ball right to left, period. I practice my short game from the left hand side of most greens ... I will be more specific. Dear Good Fairy Clem I only want to hit the ball within ten paces of my target with a 7 iron (150 yds). I have spent a small fortune on lessons and books. Then again I also wanted to play NBA. Oh, and I really do practice.

  • Thats my last name!!! And im Colombian!!!

  • these are the best tuition videos I have ever seen. all the other tips I have taken on - in between the lessons with my club pro - I have had to un-do> But not these: the explanation of the arms dropping in front of the body, the left hip clearing a la Hogan because your brain gets a message that the arms are coming through are just so natural. When I let my arms drop first I get a great ball strike and accelerate through the ball.

  • @mablanning Thanks very much!

You should get on my forum as well to get more in depth with these techniques; we have a great bunch of guys (and galls) who are crazy about golf and playing it well; you will be in great company...:) I also chime in regularly...Shawn

  • Excellent! You just answered the central question that has been vexing me and destroying my swing! Left leg, left leg, left leg!

I've been hanging back on my right leg for years!

  • @Nuclearfueled1 Now once you get this a few times and feel the connection; you need to see "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2 to realize that you won't even need to think about this when you are focused on the target and the action to the target! Have fun! Shawn

  • First of all thx again for ur clips; helped me a lot! This question is actually from the horseshoe/lasso clip. I am 5'3" in height, so it would be a bit tough for me to "heave" up and drop down with my driver and fairway woods. Any other drills or swing thoughts for little people like me on this issue?? Thanks again!! I support u here on Golfchannel all the way from Taiwan!

  • Getting to my left side has been a problem. I've hit 100s of balls with the 1 foot drill at the suggestion of pros. I thought it was about balance & staying behind the ball so I kept on hanging back. Your statements: "The ENTIRE downswing rotates around the left leg" & "The weight of the head is supported by the left leg" made it click. I had good results at the range, but felt way too far ahead of the ball. So I went with a camera & not so! The downswing really does feel like the 1 foot drill.

  • @jbrian53 Awesome!

Now if you want to time it instinctively, see my latest video with the title of "golf pro lesson horse shoes and lassos"! Shawn

  • Great Video Shawn it really helped my game. However, I have noticed that sometimes you "pre-tilt"/ brace against your left leg at address however in this video you seem to brace at the top of your backswing. I hope you understand my confusion, but basically my question is do you brace at address or in the backswing.

  • @CubbieBlue2008 Both!! See "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1 and 2 as well as "golf pro lesson tilted twirl" Shawn

  • Thank you! I don't think I've actually split wood with an axe, but I'll pretend now that I have a heavier image...

  • SHAWN !! Think i am finally getting this thanks to you! I noticed my weight keeps getting outside of my left foot on the way down and its causing me to move in front of the ball. So once we plant that left foot would it be wise to feel like we are resisting with the inside of the left foot ? Feels good like my upper body can just whip through the swing around my left leg that feels like it is pressing firmly into the ground,. Is that a good feel?

  • @pokerlife123 You bet! Use the downhill lie situation to exaggerate this feel and reinforce it! "golf pro lesson uphill downhill sidehill"

    Shawn

  • Shawn, I have been concentrating on the backswing, and I am feeling like in order to stay "centered/balanced" (no swaying) over the ball as I swing the club back, is feel like my butt goes back and LEFT. So I feel like there are 2 movements (opposing forces) acting in opposite directions which keeps me centered over the ball. Is this correct?.

  • @pointspreadpros Correct! and this is not a reverse pivot! This is exactly what Hogan did and Jack Nicklaus did!

    Shawn

  • Shawn, The first part of the "fall", I am feeling like I keep my back to the target as long as I can, while my right buttocks (I am a right hander) moves slightly downward (the squat) and BEHIND me, paralell to my target line. In other words, the right buttocks is moving back to a spot "NOT at the ball" but in paralell to the ball. because the lower body has started the downswing, and the right hip will instead of "spinning out" will put the golfer back into the braced left side. Am I close?

  • @pointspreadpros Yep! To time this even better; use the perpetual motion drill like in my "golf pro lesson get amazing rhythm" video as combo this with the "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update" video where I demo the "Centrifugal pump";

    Shawn

  • Dear Shawn,

First off, GREAT VIDEO and great advice!!! The newfound trajectory and consistency in found in my ball striking has left me speechless---all due to your teachings vis a vis YouTube! The one problem that keeps finding its ugly head into my game is with my long irons (3 and 4 specifically), in that I have a hard time getting elevation and oftentimes results in an unintentional "stinger" that usually travels only about a buck fifty and to the right (w/the 4 knuckle grip).Any thoughts

  • @mwxd22 This definitely a tilt issue; see "golf pro lesson tilted twirl" for more info;

    Shawn

  • Great video. Thank you. This is what i am looking for

  • Great video! Thank you... Are you doing a complete backswing here and in your other videos? I'm wondering how to know when I'm doing that.

  • @molsondrive1970 Yes; it should feel like you are heaving an axe into the air to split wood; you notice that you never over heave the axe right? So make sure you feel the weight of the arm-club unit at address and use the forward press to heave the unit into the backswing and then get the body ready to twirl the unit to that target! It should feel like you have everything you need to swat the tar out of it! Shawn

  • Where does the actual weight go? Does it go onto the heel of the left foot as you start down? Because i tend to get it on the ball-toes of my left foot and i move off the tush line and shank it, hook it or block it. Everyone is so general about where the weight goes (left foot we all know) but never where it goes (heel, toes, or ball). I see tiger woods starts down and his toes on his left foot lift up.. mine don't. any advice? thanks Shawn

  • @qbb01 It goes to the left ankle-heel of the left foot to support the downswing; as you have already experienced, you are not getting to the platform that will support your centre of gravity; see "golf pro lesson get great balance" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" for dynamic feel of what being in balance is! Also see exactly on the graph of our dynamic balance machine(golf pro lesson dynamic balance system) My new 5 disc dvd will help you immensely in this department as well; Shawn

  • omg, I have struggled with my weight shift for years! I would throw myself onto my left leg, only to end up on my right leg at the end of my swing again. This video is the best one I have ever seen. can't wait to start practicing this

  • Hi Shawn

great video. just a quick question does you right knee tend to point outwards(to right) on backswing, i seem to remember Ben Hogan used to encourage turning against the right knee i.e. keep it pointing towards the ball.

    Thanks

    Mike

  • Excellent! Thank you so much.

  • i play left handed on right handed clubs does that matter

  • A week ago I "got" it. I mean I timed the left foot plant perfectly and then whipped my arms through as I turned my hips left with my core muscles. My irons went 10 yards further and my driver 20. It felt like my axis was my planted left leg and I moved effortlessly around it. I haven't hit the ball quite as well since that evening, but it feels like a breakthrough. 2 days later I broke 80 for the first time this year. Thanks!

  • And as this video and the "how to clear the hips" demostrates the hips must and will clear in only ONE way once the proper pivot is achieved - in a protruded way with the left hip squaring (like in address position - Hogan power move video) first and then the right hip rotating later

Shawn, ur videos provide so many great tools to master this great game!

  • The more aware I become of my golf swing, the more I tend to think that it comes down to being able to shift one's weight so that one can properly pivot during the downswing.

  • Hi Shawn - Does the plant happen before the hogan power move or is it one in the same? It appears that you bounce back into your left side and then put your hips back against the wall without giving up the space. Just trying to get my sequence correct. Thanks.

  • Thanks Shawn! I really admire how you take the time to get back to us and answer our questions.

  • Hi Shawn, I am a follower of your teachings and your DVD has helped me a ton. I am having trouble grasping this part of the swing; Bracing against my left side on the downswing. I think I'm shifting my weight from the front like you said at

2:09. How do I "toss fall, fall" if I don't raise my front foot on the backswing? My front heal stays down on the backswing and I'm not getting to that braced position on the downswing.

  • I have a perfect video for you: "Golf pro lesson get more club speed and power" You will see what I mean; Keep at it; it will evolve!! Shawn

  • I've always had trouble with the downswing weightshift, but now I simply shift my body until I feel pressure on my left heel. As soon as I feel this pressure I feel "safe" - and more importantly my body feels "safe" - and I can just rip thru the ball without losing my balance. This is such a breakthru for me, and this video is the reason for it. Thanks again Shawn!

  • Right on! Shawn

  • I agree with you, Shawn ... this video seals the deal explaining exactly how to transition into the downswing. I've never heard a better piece of instruction anywhere else. Now, can you help explain how this would work with a right-handed, left leg amputee with a fixed ankle that doesn't flex? Once I turn into my backswing, the "ankle" doesn't allow my heel to "fall" back into position on the ground - it remains elevated slightly. This is a bit awkward, balance-wise. Any advice for me?

  • Great question; if you were going to be in a tug of war and you had to use the left leg for leverage, how good of a brace would you have and also, how far up does the amputation go?

    Shawn

  • Using my left leg as a brace requires me to bend the leg/knee much more than an able-bodied person. So, golf-wise, it feels very incorrect. This, I think, is due to the inability of using the left heel, since it is 'fixed.' I can 'fall' to the left toe, but not the left heel(this is where I say in the original post the left heel remains elevated). I wonder if you might agree that my golf swing is going to be a experimental affair I must find on my own?

  • Shawn, your videos are unlike any I have seen. They are helpful, clear, have easy concepts, and are concise. I am a loyal subscriber and your videos helped me to completely rebuild my golf swing, and understand my golf machine like never before! Thank you so much, you truly have made a difference in my life, and I am sure you have with thousands of others as well.

    -Mike

  • Thank you Mike!

All the best and stay tuned; we will take this far!

    Shawn

  • Hello Shawn, I have a question about your swing here it looks like a reverse pivot? I hit all my irons thin and to the left and looking to rebuild my swing . My driver goes low and to the left will this swing work for the driver and keep me from hitting it thin or low and left?

  • Not even close!! A reverse pivot is an out of balance condition that cannot be righted! This is why some so called experts said Hogan had a reverse pivot...see my "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" and then see my "golf pro lesson proper spine tilt angle" and "golf pro lesson great driver tip" for the issues in your driver; Shawn

  • Whenever I'm at range I always seem to tear up alot of turf with my feet especially left foot compared to others I see at the range, any clues to as why this is happening? Thx

  • Hi there,

This is Matt Blois, one of Shawn's Assistant Teaching Professionals at the Richmond Hill Golf Learning Centre.

The reason the turf is being torn up under you left foot is that your foot is spinning out on the downswing. This results from not being braced against your left side before you arms begin swinging down. Take a look at "Golf pro lesson one leg swing no weight shift", hope that helps!

    -Matt

  • Hey shawn,

I was on itunes the other day downloading some very useful podcasts for a computer programme I am trying to learn, when out of pure interest I thought I might try to search for you, the search came back with nothing, but it dawned on me that podcasts could be great idea!? Us fans could then watch on the train / bus etc on the way to work, and wouldn't need a computer to hand every time we want to re watch a lesson of yours, they would be on our portable ipods etc.

    just an idea! Gary

  • Great video Shawn. The hogan power drill is the greatest.I have noticed that on my finish my weight is on the left side however I end up rolling my left foot up on its edge.I was born with a club foot and that foot is straight however it is much weaker and smaller than the right.I dont believe I am swaying . Perhaps there maybe something else causing this. Is this move acceptable or is it a swing flaw. You have some of the greatest videos I have ever seen and would like to say thank you very much

  • And one more thing. I know I'm just a newbie but I have learned playing golf only from your videos. I have spend so many hours just watching your videos. Thank you very much for your work.

    Greetings from Denmark

  • Hello MadsHilde!

Yes, I know what you mean, it is called the butt of the club; and the pulling action is in response to the existing momentum; have a look at the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo" as well as the "golf pro lesson power sources"; and as a beginner, you will like the new video I just uploaded called the "golf pro lesson take better divots"; Shawn

  • I have played golf for 3 months now and this video was the big eyeopener for me. My problem was, or one of my problems was, that I started the shift from my left leg, I'm a leftie, but this video did the trick for me.

Another thing, which helped my swing alot, which I can't find any of your videos explaining, is the feel of pulling the club down in the downswing like if I wanted to hit the ball with the tip of the shaft. Hope you know what I mean.

  • totally agree with mrpedrogolf, his right leg collapses on his backswing where as it should be stable and flexed a little. i know this cus i do the same thing lol its hard to get out of though.

  • It is not a collapse guys! Have a look at my "golf pro lesson head bobbing" video and the new video I came out with called "golf pro lesson get more power"; you will understand how and why and come out of the dark! :) Also, if you are a doctor, you will love my "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" with my best assistant, Scully, who is a life size skeleton in our office!

    Shawn

  • cool im not saying its wrong cus i played pretty good with a straight leg on the backswing myself but i just wasnt quite consistant enough. i understand your method aswell and if it works then do it as theres no set method. Your videos are generally very good though so no complaints :)

  • Great Video! Shawn, by the weight shifting happening from behind do you mean the feeling of someone pulling you as if there was a rope tied to your back at the top of your swing? So that your body is now supported by the left side.

  • he is not only a gret teacher , he is very very attractive ,( hot )

  • I am still waiting for the lesson on how to score on the golf course after having a big argument with the wife.

  • All of Shawn's videos are 1st class. I just purchased his dvd series, watched them and applied lessons to course....everything works, been playing off and on for 25 yrs and now I hit the ball a ton and they go where I am aiming...thanks Shawn.

  • Thanks for all the great comments you guys!

I am very happy you are enjoying your games!

    Shawn

  • you can really teach well hun! you helped my game and my girl friends at the course watch and learn from you as well. They think you are great.

  • can i ask why does it look like your right leg is straightening on back swing? it looks as though its throwing your weight the wrong way

  • Although the right leg does not become complete strait on the back swing it does straiten a little. If you have a big hip turn the only way you can maintain that right knee angle is to "load up on the right side" at that point you are in reverse C territory like Phil M.

The point is that you do not throw your weight at all. Shawn's big hip turn theory allows you to simply fall into the left side. It makes that hitting into the left side stupid easy and for me pain free!!!!

  • Hi, thanks for the video. Very helpful. I took me about a month to make the adjustment but I went from being a scooper to being a crusher. Thanks!

  • THANK YOU, I have watched and adjusted my swing , HOLY CRAP, i played 9 and was squashing the ball, strait and on the fairway. I am on the green in three on a par 5. and ive been playing for three months now. thank you

  • Toss, Fall, Fall watched this video carefully this morning and tried it out at the driving range.

I felt my club releasing at the last fall, and really whipped the ball. What a great feeling on impact! This is just my 2nd week since I started playing and Im amazed of how effective this technique is. Many thanks!

  • I have a great short game, I can hit irons, drive the green, or close to it on most par threes, with irons. I can put. I cannot drive to save my life, I feel bad for ANYONE that lives on the right side of a fairway that i am teeing off of....sorry bout that window. Any Videos about mastering the drive?

  • Of course!

"golf pro lesson great driver tip", "golf pro lesson modern driver", "golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2"; and "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip?"; this should do the trick! Shawn

  • Clem- fantastic videos- would love to buy the DVD. Can I ask; i'm in the UK- do you do the DVDs in Region 2

If not i'm flying out to you to have a lesson!

  • Hi Shawn- I understand and love the concept of your teaching, but my trouble is that I have trouble taking a divot, and especially in front of the ball. It seems like I stay back behind the ball, bottoming out. topping the ball and skipping my fairway woods failing to get them airborne. I'm 5'11 and weigh 291 pounds. Thanks for your help!

  • I am over 300 lbs just take a wider stance

  • Watch the "ARMS FALLING Down Plane" and "Swing Sequence" videos.

  • See" golf pro lesson through ball" and "golf pro lesson compress through the ball" videos; My dvd would be an immense help as well! :) Shawn

  • Hey Shawn thanks so much, I know what drills you are talking about, I have tried them but I will try again for sure. My main things besides that.lol is trying to stay on plane I believe, I usually always hit behind the ball, top it or slice like crazy. I love the game so much and am in the process of learning, but deffinately frustrating. Any tips to help with any of this would be MUCH apreciated. Thanks so much hopefully you can be my life savor.

  • See if you can order my dvd series bud! It has all the important info done from scratch in high quality audio and video and all in PRIORITY SEQUENCE! 4 hours over 3 discs and disc 3 has all shots in detail on course from the driver to the putter! In the meantime, see "golf pro lesson swing plane" and "Golf Pro lesson perpetual motion drill" Shawn

  • Ive gotta say this guy really makes some great videos. Sean question for you if you got some time. I have a tendency to pull up or swing my hips to much. Whats the best advice you can give me to stay on plane and stop throwing my hips so much? Any help would be great.

  • You need to feel that you are able to whip the club without the use of the lower body; go to the "golf pro lesson feet together drill and the "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift"; they will get you that effortless power feel;

    Shawn

  • Guys, I am posting this after a great day on the range in hopes it will help some of you feel Shawn's move:

From braced/tilt and without letting the pressure leave the inside of the left instep, think WIDE takeaway thrusting arms in the air from momentum, then let gravity take over. As arms fall, you will need to counter the weight of the arms with a "fall to the left side, butt first". Then just keep the momentum going through to the finish. Best of luck!

  • Shawn, One thing that is not stated here but you have hinted at it on other videos is the other issue with swaying onto your back foot on the back swing. One of my biggest causeds of my swing farts off the tee is I do not let my hips clear on the down swing. This is often caused by my hips sliding forward rather than rotating on the down swing. I then became aware that most of the time I slide my hips forward rather than rotate is to compensate for my weight being stuck on my right side.

  • Shawn,

I've been looking at some of your videos, and found them helpful, insightful, and liberating. I started golfing 1/09, read books got confused, and now I'm planning on getting your DVD. As a lightweight (5'8", 137lb), how far should i expect to hit my 4 iron, based on some of your students? I know you're like 6'1", ~210lb.

Also, did you ever or do you compete, or play tourneys?

  • Hey and Thanks for the comment and question! I have a student of mine who is also a light weight I was teaching yesterday he is about your stature maybe shorter and he used to pitch fast ball; he has what you call in the sports world "fast twitch muscles and can send his 7 iron about 170, where I have seen guys at my height hit it 160 with a nice lag; so it depends on you; the DVD (and some practice) will definitely bring out the most efficient in you; Shawn

  • Thanks for your comment! I have always been a pretty long player and regularly drive the ball 320 plus with today's technology which is insane I know; my 4 iron is my 215 club and my 3 iron is my 227 club. I will have other videos soon to complement "golf pro lesson power sources" and "golf pro lesson how much hit to apply"; all the best and thank you again for your support! Shawn

  • Great video! I tend to get over my left leg but leave my arms behind is this caused by not enough turn in the backswing?

  • See the following video (golf pro lesson timing and tempo update) which will make you realize that the arm-club unit should never rely on the body for placement; it should always be given to gravity and centrifugal force while the body is simply turning out of the way so the arm-club unit does not crash into it;

Thanks for the great question! Shawn

  • Just finished watching this for the nteenth time. Sometimes it takes awhile to get the right feel. Also just watched your DVD....in the section about the weight shift to the left side (BUTT first)......you say.....like falling off a log.....I hope you were not kidding. The sensation of falling off a log allows me to get left and also maintain the width.....(? width seems to feel like it is increasing).....I hope you were being serious about the sensation of falling off the log. Were you??

  • YESS!! Allright!! When falling into the left side butt first, you will feel like the arms are still floating and it will feel like the width is getting bigger! Way to go!

Thanks for the great comment; Shawn

  • Hi vjmd, from the video, "like falling off a log" makes me think of falling backwards,so that the weight would go to the heels. But when Shawn says "BUTT first" does he mean the butt moves toward the TARGET or does it mean the butt moves BACKWARD to the heels. From this video it looks like the butt moves toward the target. Thanks!

  • Thanks. Not sure-maybe Shawn can answer. Refining this move is one of the keys to everything but harder than it seems (for me anyway). I've thought of it as the butt going in a general vector parallel to the target line and of course in direction of target itself (getting to the left). ...I key on my right glute. But I like your comment about falling back towards the heels from top of downswing. When I try it the feel seems to be similar and seems to convert to the squat. Shawn--please

  • Towards the target more so; if too much towards the heels, there will be a loss of balance backwards and a reaction to that out of balance condition; see "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 1 and 2 for more insight;

    Thanks for posting! Shawn

  • hey shawn... great tips. i feel like i owe you money, lol. lately i've been pull hooking my long irons and often hitting them fat. do you have any tips on that?

    thanks again!

  • hey FD!

You need maximum width with minimum strain THROUGH THE BALL! See "golf pro lesson through the ball" and see the 2 ball drill in the 6th minute, then when you hit a regular shot, pretend you always have that 2nd ball in front; also use the "perpetual motion drill" video to help you feel how you are using centrifugal force to create width in the backswing by turning the body fully out of the way of the arm swing; Shawn

  • i really can't thank you enough for your lessons. i've learnt more from your vids than i ever have taking lessons. thank you for sharing your knowledge, and if you're ever in dallas i owe you a steak dinner.

  • Sounds good! I would love to do a Texas Tour eventually when the kids are in College and I can travel! :)

Have a great Father's Day! Shawn

  • Exactly! Let the arms fall to the finish! Do not let the ball become the target! See "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" Shawn

  • Have a look at the following videos: "Golf Pro Lesson power sources" and "golf pro lesson how much hit to apply"

It will get you closer to what you are looking for!

    Thanks for the questions! Shawn

  • I was told by the the pro that turned me onto Shawns videos, that the people who gave up on this swing theory simply did not make a big enough hip turn to be able to "reflect" off the right side.

Today I did the one legged drill and was simly pounding the golf ball. The course pro told me that it was impressive but he said that you could not hit a fade with one leg. Opened the club face a litte and I crushed the ball with a slight fade. The pro was impressed. I was stunned.

  • Yes sir! Keep opening their eyes!

Thanks for the great comment bluejfk!

    Shawn

  • Wrong hotuguy..

What Shawn has laid out for us in his videos is a roadmap and we must follow EVERYTHING he is teaching or the final result won't be good. You can't just take ONE thing and say "It doesnt work"

I suggest you go back to the basics in Shawn's earlier videos and find out where YOU are failing and forget about saying "it doesnt work". It DOES work, just not for you.

  • This way does not work, as you noticed towards the end he does not even use what he preaches. Tried this at a golf course and it was a disaster. With irons keep equal weight on both feet, and start your swing with your hips. Far and straight. try it out.

  • What the heck are you talking about dude??!! I practice everything I preach in spades and you can't see it because the wool is still covering your eyes! If you look at my "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review" part 1 and 2 you would see that you can use both methods that I teach, either stay braced against the left side from a strong right side which gives most the feel that they are 50/50 during the whole swing or this method here which some enjoy more like Tom Watson, Bobby Jones, Jack...

  • Guys, Hank Haney in this months Golf Digest uses the same feeling as I do to get the correct sequence. He says to "Feel like the shoulders stay back when starting the downswing". Try this feeling, it is gold, and you will never come over the top again. Our instinct is to "hit" coming down from the top, when we need to actually be passive. This feeling will get you right where Shawn wants us!

  • Yes, this feeling is what you want when planting into the left side; then you can let the whole body unwind out of the way of the free swinging arms through the ball and to a target;

Thanks for the tip and defense up above! :) Shawn

  • hi shawn. this video is exactly what i needed to see. i've been playing a couple of years & just couldn't get the idea of swinging through the ball. i always swing off my back foot and fall off the ball. i couldn't visualize how to shift my weight to my front leg. you make it very clear and easy to keep that swing thought in your head. i look at a lot of different coaching videos onyou tube. you are the best by far!!!!! thankyou----tommy r---ny

  • Thanks Tommy! All the best to you! Shawn

  • Before discovering your videos, I was shooting in the high 90's. First time out this season, I shot a 42 on the front nine. The wisdom of your teachings, specfically the concept of 'the downswing revolving around the left leg' was a bit of an epiphany for me. I was finally able to put it to proper use, impressing my foursome.

Thanks again Shawn... You are definitely the Master golf instructor on youtube!

  • Thanks for the great comment! Very well worded!

    Shawn

  • clemshaw>thanks for you great tips. I'm having some problems with the sequence of movement on the downswing. I start off the downswing with my hip rotation, from my left side. It seems to work for a driver and my 3 wood, but I cannot hit irons with that method. Your step by step was easy to follow till the very end, when you do everything in one motion. Basically my question is what is the first muscle that does the work on the downswing. Thanks.

  • gravity! you should feel a falling onto your left side, so that your braced and really planted on that foot. then let your arms and the club "fall" through the ball. that's why it should feel like an effortless whipping motion.

  • To try to isolate that muscle would be to sabotage the swing; the conscious mind is not where you want to be to execute the swing; this would be like trying to use a Commodore 64 or a calculator to surf high speed internet! This also explains why you were having so much trouble on the range like you mention up above...See "golf pro lesson "Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 for a simpler approach and "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and tempo update" and "Bilateral Golf Swing" to get deeper into this one...

  • The term "shifting from the back" was a true "aha" moment for me. I feel it, if I think "hold my shoulders back" when I start the downswing, then you get that feeling of shifting the weight from the back. Does this make sense to you?

Shawn, you are the best instructor, bar none I have ever took information from.

Thanks so much for all you do.

  • You are right on! As long as when you plant, you feel braced against the left side and not on top of it; a good follow up is the "Golf Pro lesson 2008 Golf Swing review"; Shawn

  • hi shawn,

I tried your suggestion this morning at the range and it works amazingly well. I was able to solve some of my problems with my turn and also, I automatically strike the balls better. thanks again.

  • Shawn,

Is there additional drills to help me plant to the left side? I can do the "toss fall fall" slow but can seem to incorporate into my full swing?

btw got the DVD, I love that top spin putting tip from the fringe...

  • Thanks and great question! You have 2 options: "Either stay against the left side like in the one leg drill; the evolution of that one leg drill is the "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 videos or you evolve to the "golf Pro lesson 2008 Golf swing review part 2" and if you go to my "you tube Analogies" page, you will see the first subject line called "bilateral Golf Swing" and check out the videos there; see "Golf pro lesson Perpetual motion drill" too...Shawn

  • thanks Shawn. once again, your instruction is clear and easy to understand. thx for teaching us. I do have a question, when the weight falls back to the inside of the left foot, will that be sort of reverse pivot? I had been shifting the weight as you described for a while but often told by others including local pro that I was doing a reverse... ....thx.

  • And they said the same thing about Ben Hogan's swing! Ridiculous and could not be farther from the truth! A reverse pivot is an OUT OF BALANCE CONDITION; what we teach IS THE MOST BALANCED A HUMAN BODY CAN GET! Enjoy your swing guilt free OK? :)

  • Hi Shawn, I often finish off balance and feel that this may be due to failing to plant the left side, Q, is this plant where the left back-pocket handkerchief meets the mirror (in the hogan power drill vid) and the hips begin to turn as you slide, or is there still only the right handkerchief toutching the mirror after the plant and weight shift ?

Thanks so much for all the great vids.

  • Shawn, is the "fall" to start the downswing similar to the "hip bump" that I have seen? Golf Tips Mag this month has an instruction on the last page this month. I tend to spin a little on my left heel and figure that I am not bracing my left side enough? Thanks!

  • Yes! Have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2" as a follow up to this one as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson timing and tempo update"

    Shawn

  • This vid brought home to me what's probably causing a lower back pain after taking up golf: a weightshift from the front. Causing all sorts of trouble: improper axis, strain on my spinejoints and shots going all over the place. See if this downswing weightshift drill will remedy this.

  • Yes; also see the video titles I gave malcolm above...

    Thanks for the comment!

    Shawn

  • Just looked at your message board and found it great that you answer all these question so people can better enjoy the game of golf. Very well done.

  • Great video and simple instructions Shawn. Ive just picked up the game for a year, unfortunately, i cant seem to get the distance, its embarassing..especially since im 6'1 and a former rugby player..my mates say im scooping the ball on impact, appreciate if you could provide some tips on that

cheers and continue the excellent work..im off to try out your advice

  • This one should help a lot; see also the "Golf Pro Lesson timing and tempo update" and "golf Pro Lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2"; must practice drills: "Feet together drill", "One leg swing no weightshift drill" and "perpetual motion drill"; all titles of mine too! Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • An additional note. I see Ive already commented on this video a month ago and said how important it was for me, and yet after a couple of weeks Id forgotten and returned to previous bad habits! Tough game this golf! What amazes me is the effortless power that comes from this move Ive no idea where the power is coming from but its there and I love it. It allows me to swing easily which allows better rhythm and more consistency.

  • Hey JCR; I also have a video to answer your question on power; "golf pro lesson power sources"

    Shawn

  • This video answers the question I posted to your latest video. I had forgotten how to fall into the left side at the start of the downswing. I was shanking, coming OTT, hitting short. The sensation I feel when doing this properly is keeping my back to the target as long as possible on the downswing. Probably as I was falling onto the left side I was also spinning the hips which resulted in bad tempo. Now Im hitting the ball well again. Absolutely essential this video! Great Shawn.

  • Shawn,

Your vids are awesome! I've watched a lot of instruction, but I just seem to really connect with your instruction. I discovered your videos about 10 days ago, and am anxious to get out on the course. I just purchased your DVD and can't wait for it to get here! I really feel that with your help I'm going to take my game to the next level this season....Thanks!

  • just a comment i wanted to make. t=you mention you can hit a drive 300 yards and you have mastered the golf swing. i can tell you love to teach, but with your game habve you ever thought of playing on tour?? whether pga or nationwide.

is it something that justn;t interest you? i;m sure you have the game to compete.

    thanks! carmen

  • Hey Carmen!

Thanks for the question and comment! One day I would want to go back but for now I am enjoying my kids and my teaching career; much work to do before I can go back to thinking of myself...:) Shawn

  • Shawn I mean you are the best, I want to get in my car and drive to Canada for instruction. I have played the game for about six years now (in Michigan) and I play ok I'm about a 11 handicap. I used to hook the ball because of non rotation and hand flip through impact. Watching your videos and following you I hit the ball like nobody's business, but now I don't know how far to rotate to the left through impact, not enough push right, too much slight pull left can you please help? Thanks Torri
