The lyrics posted on the video aren't exactly 100 % correct, but I won't quibble. I'm from Passaic, NJ, where the textile mills closed, the downtown is a dreck, the railroad tracks were pulled up in '63 which drove out the businesses and the commuters who had a living to make in NYC., and there were race riots in 1967. Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of Passaic.

I grew up about 14 miles outside of Pittsburgh, PA. My dad was a steel worker. This reminds me of when American Bridge closed up where he worked. All the steel mills closed about that time.

When Bruce says the textilmill closing down and the foreman say these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back that is very true in my town Toledo Ohio. This city is nothing but empty buidings and trash. There is nothing here. I am glade we are moving, High schools closing, movie theaters just closed. The only thing that keeps downtown going is the mud hens(Triple A baseball) and the walleye(hockeye) that is it. Its a mini Detroit (drugs and killings).

I think it fits with the theme of the song for the ending to look a little happy, as you're looking through the eyes of his young child. It fits with the cyclic theme of the song - changes, the passage of time. In the beginning of the song, the narrator seems to be fondly remembering getting his dad a newspaper. Such is the innocence of youth. It's only those things we find later - prejudice, hate, money - that dim things for us. And then you have children, and it starts over.

I used to get irritated at artists who took the class warefare, anti-corporate attitude, like Mellencamp and Springsteen; but they are for the most part Right!

This song is striking, particularly about the manufacturing jobs for the average person leaving and not coming back. NAFTA and other exporting of jobs has killed the backbone of this country. Now it is either high tech jobs, government jobs or retail jobs; very sad indeed to see how far the country has fallen since about the '50's.
