To be honest, this is actually go-go music from the 70's [Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers].......but this isn't go-go music like it is today; you need to check out some DC bands like Rare Essence, Northeast Groovers and Backyard [Look for the difference of how it changed from the 70's to today]
That's some good music that you're playing though!!
The bass drum and snare pattern are from Chuck Brown's "We Need Some Money" (1984) which is your "standard" go-go drum beat with two added bass drum hits on the last two 32nd notes of the first beat. The open hi-hat 8th notes are typical of "third generation" go-go drum beats.
how any one can lay claim to a beat that is based on 3;2 son clave and has been played on drum kit for decades is beyond me! I admire Brians as a drummer, I think Tim Alexandra was a better musician and obviously not as full of himself as this guy is, but no musician can claim to of invented anything as all music has roots. Opening a hi during a beat that's been played for generations is not 'inventing' a new beat!
Lower the hats and play more notes with some lifts and play more fills. If you're playing a Brain beat play more like Brain. Also they are sixteenth note triplets note just sixteenths. So make sure it goes inbetween two eight note hat hits. Keep drumming.
no dude. this is good. especially the bass roll. the very same beat was used in the end of "sardines" by the junkyard band.

Ok ok, it's not a gogo beat, but I have used the style of Brian Mantia. This is just my drumstyle !

This isn't GoGo because he doesn't have proper GoGo feel put into it. It sounds too straight ahead..

Definitely make the high hat tighter, and stick some grace notes there that you would normally play on the snare.
onestick 4 years ago
mute the hi hat more, then give it an open just before the snare beat. nice job with the bass pedal. the end sounded really good.
