Dude I know it is old video, but you forget add one more important thing!
When iPhone using it "gps" signal it is going thru your Internet limits. As iPhone 4 don't have a really gps receiver on board!!!
And when you connect to the tomtom kit it only use your internet limits for the start ( few second to the time when find position) then it using gps build on tomtom kit.
It make sound silly but after my first trip using tomtom on iPhone, and driving from Scotland to Bavaria and back my bill f
Great review. The audio quality sounds awful during the phone call. Perhaps the call is dropping out in the usual GSM way.
Happily, TomTom have slashed the price for the introduction of the Carkit in NZ - $198 - which is (at last) less than the price of a standalone TomTom.
I've ordered one because I find the TomTom software is not much use with the built-in iPhone GPS (it loses its position frequently).
Also, my Belkin charger can't keep up with the power draw!
The flexibility of the iphone car kit allows me to decide which navigation system I want to use not only today but in the future. I currently have ATT Navigator which is really TeleNav (awesome real time traffic nav app) which ATT charges $10 a month but I'm buying the TomTom app through iTunes today and give it a try. It's a $99 app on sale for a couple of more days for $49 through itunes. If it's decent everyday nav, I'll discontinue my ATT Nav either way, I've got the best car kit available.
If all you want is navigation, buy the standalone unit, but if you want a great iphone docking system plus navigation for your car, this is it. The iphone car kit provides a great dock capable of positioning the unit exactly in the position you want it. Being able to play my itunes though my car speakers, charge my phone battery, speaker phone & enhanced GPS was a big +. (continued above.)
Really good review, but i want to ask you a question, is it possible to make a call through the speaker from the car kit if the phone is not connected or is not placed on the kit, i mean through the bluetooth only? And one more, can you use this kit with other software instead of tomtom app. ?Thank you in advance for your response!!!
i guess its probably just more convenient with the iphone? easier to travel with? i would think with you paying soo much, it should include the app. That way it would be like buying a dedicated one, except you provide the hardware.
Cool review, i bought the app after watching your reviews, i have just recently put it in my car to test it.
I have a car stereo with a USB port in it for my iphone,mp3, etc, I found out that if you plug your iphone in and put the tomtom app on the sound comes out through the car speakers in stereo as loud as you would like it by turning up the sound on your stereo.
You can also still play the tracks on your iphone and when the app talks to you the music goes done and come back up when done.
Currently I use a stand alone TT740 which works brilliantly & a Nokia N95 phone. Previously I used an HP6815 smartphone with TT & a seperate bluetooth receiver. I'm about to upgrade to an iPhone 3g. The main benefit I see with the iPhone carkit is the elimination of the dashboard spagetti I have with my former and current options. One dashmount instead of two, one power source instead of two and no dash "clutter", is more than enough reason to convince me that this is the best way forward.
Please try and transmit a call via the option "speaker". I Think there is a bug in the kit/software cause I dont get the call via the carstereospeaker when I choose that option (i have off course connected the carkit with a jackstick to the carstereo). Please report back. Thanks. Jake
Thanks for all the info. Have just ordered the car kit from TomTom direct. Don't have a navigation app yet, will probably go for TomTom, but Copilot looks good.
Ps. Found the IQ Route option not that great. It uses past history of traffic and from gathered info knows at what time traffic is most conjested and avoids this part of the route. It can make the journey longer and not always what it avoids has heavy traffic. Radio info much better have this on my rider tommy. Apart from that best app yet 100% yes from me. But then the iPhone makes any app look great hey:-)
Great reveiw btw, I was 99% getting this kit but I decided for a £8 version after your review. The iPhone has a loud enough speaker and that I had no problem traveling 2500km and had most of those radar traps. I have a tomtom rider and it's perfect for the bike or car but when your in need of directions and tomtom is at home it's just fantastic to have tommy on your phone, as this is always upon you anyway really. If the kit had solar power then it might be worth!
How does the updated app work with the car kit. Is there any lag at all?
I bought the western Europe version of the app (for the reduced price of around £60 thanks to Clintons). A stand alone unit would set you back £250 (incl Europe). So it's cheaper to get the car kit.
too expensive, the only reason to buy this would be if you have an older iphone without gps. i guess they will have to lower the price significantly or bundle it with the software, otherwise this is more expensive then an normal external navigation system.
@elamre: Yes, we need someone to load the TomTom app onto an ipod touch and test if it is able to utilise the GPS receiver built into the TomTom car kit.
sad news, i contacted em and this is answer:Dear Mr ,
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Care
The reference number for your query is 091019-001902.
Im afraid that the software has not been made to work on the I pod touch 2g. You could contact Apple and ask if they have any plans to change this in the future but for now it will not work.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact myself.
I think I'm gonna have it!! I know its expensive but I use my Navigon quite a lot - even when I kinda know where I'm going - just for the speed cam warnings! I also like how easy it goes on the windscreen! And the voice is excellent! I could get rid of my Jabra SP700 with this! ..
Sounded like the audio was chopped of occasionally at the beginning with the automatic response. Also, I had trouble understanding the man. Don't know if both is due to the video (must be if you said the audio quality was good).
Anyway, same feature set and such a big price difference? That's quite a rip-off.

When the IPhone is not on the power, the GPS works not well. The GPS works better when the IPhone is on the power.
