@bromixsr - For me, the closest "drinks" equivalent I could ever think of for Ben Webster was a glass of Scotch with half a teaspoon of wild honey stirred in. But then, we all hear things differently.
Kenny G may have gotten more reviews, but the common masses do not appreciate great jazz like we do. This is lovely, lovely, so lovely......thanks for putting all these great standards up for us to enjoy.
Did anyone ever play ballads with more heart and sensuous depth of feeling? OK, maybe Prez and Rabbit, Dexter and Harry Carney. But something is indefinably special about Ben. Maybe it's the primacy of sound itself, the texture and timbre that few saxophonists achieve, combined with a kind of spiritual longing I associate more with Coltrane than with products of Midwestern Swing.
@CrimsonAlun I'm glad you mentioned sincerity. Lester Young used to recommend knowing the lyrics of any song you were improvising on, so that what you "said" in your solo would have a basis in sincerity and not just be some abstract noodling or technical pyrotechnics. And Ben's tone, what can you say? Not to be maudlin but it's what I'd want to hear on my deathbed.
Dear CCJazzmen2, I agree totally with you. Thanks for the wonrderfull post, I recommand you also " over the rainbow " on you tube and still played by this Giant
It doesn't get much better than this.

It's settled. I'm gonna stick with my tenor until my lungs are ripped!
So motivational for other tenors cause it shows tenors limits

A good sax performance goes down smooth like a nicely aged scotch poured into fine crystal. This, my friends, was smooth.

i think it's the marquee club in london, 1964.
stan tracy's trio with a young rick laird on bass, who would switch to bass guitar a few years later to be part of the first mahavishnu orchestra...

@peteroak2009 For tone and sincerity: nobody matched Ben; and I say that as a massive Trane and Sonny R fan.
