Craig Ferguson talks too much, interrupts his guests. It's the guest we want to hear not Ferguson's comments. He should take note from Michael Parkinson (former British chat show host) He got the best out his guests.
@jeanniethegrinch I think he's got a good balance. This feels like an organic discussion between two people rather than a host reading questions, a guest answering, over and over. Stephen is of course a fascinating person to listen to, but I find Craig Ferguson a witty and intelligent person as well (the reason I watch his show), so I feel like together they have a very interesting conversation and bring out things you might not get just from a rote Q&A format.
And just look at him. He was expelled from school, and quite possibly is smarter than many who have college degrees. It just proves that life experience is the true teacher, not a classroom.
@supahfreeak of life, knowledge and everything. i dunno, just felt a bit off with that comment "It just proves that life experience is the true teacher, not a classroom." yeah, school is not the end all be all solution for everything, but it's a start.
@somberlight Having some form of schooling is crucial, but you can be an incredibly smart and well read person without having ever set foot in a college classroom. I can tell you're one of those "higher education preacher" types. Which is fine, but you're biased in that regard. We are all different and have experienced life in our own unique way, consequently college is not for all of us. And I still stand by the statement, true experience comes from LIVING.
@supahfreeak oh don't mistake me for an academic type, i'm a regular underwater welder. my job is as non-academic as it can be. i just oppose the view you obviously do not hold, i mean the one where school = system / establishment = thing to be generally opposed or ignored. i guess i'm just old fart like that.
@supahfreeak lets put that the other way: take the path you chose to its logical end, and see yourself to a beginning of good life, how and whatever it may be. you seem to agree to some extent and i find that a good thing. very lovely, even im a bit of old fart :)
I relate to him so much. The way that bipolar has affected my life. I have abused coke and have bipolar disorder, the coke would calm me down immensely. I am sober now of course. I struggled in school and was always getting suspended and getting detention. I could never claim the intelligence of stephen, but bipolar truly brings out a creative and intelligent side when you learn how to harness it. And despite all of those things I truly am a smart person. He is an inspiration.
I wish he was American, then he could run for president. He should run for political office in Britain. He's so eloquent and his references about life are so vast that its not only delightful to listen to him but its impressive as well. How many people in today's society can any of us say that about?
I love that Ferguson keeps forgetting it's an interview; the best interviews are just excellent conversations. Period. And what a brilliant conversation too!
I remember having a thought like this in school ages ago, i used to get in trouble with swearing. i never saw the problem with swearing as much as the teachers. and when a teacher compeared a racist word to swearing one i royaly told him to go fuck himself. Im a wise man but in saying that im not as wise as i could be and so on. I like to think of myself as a person of free thought and wide understanding. But i dont think i could of put the meaning of Stephan's words into words of my own.
it seems he really knows how to adjust to his guests. he's usally kracking superficial jokes with movie stars and the sort. and with a really intelligent person like stephen fry he's on a completely different level, almost seems like a different person.
Wow i think I just became smarter just listening to Stephen talk...Or maybe I'm under the delusion that I learned something, doesn't matter really Stephen Fry is still a fucking genius.......see what I did there lolz the f-word as a whole new meaning to me xD
I find it awkward how Stephen constantly explains some phrases/concepts to Craig - or maybe to his viewers, which is more likely. I can imagine this being uncomfortable for Craig, I mean it's as if Stephen thought people listening to him were stupid. (fan of both Craig and Stephen here, not a troll ;) )
... and irresponsible and a bad influence to children. Now, we are part of this culture so we often don't question it, but if you think of someone from outside it it is very strange.
And they would say that how odd that the language for the awful things is used casually all the time. "Oh, the traffic was agony", "It was hell", "It was cruel", "Oh, It was torture waiting in line". They'd say "they use words like torture - that's the worst word!". And yet if we use the 'f word', which is the word for generating our species, for showing physical affection one to another then we are taken of air and accused of being wicked ...
If aliens were looking down on us and inspecting our language, they would see that the worst thing we do on this planet is we torture, we kill, we abuse, we harm people. We are cruel. And those are the things of which we should be ashamed. Amongst the best things we do is we breed children and we raise them, we make love to each other, we adore each other, we are affectionate and fond of each other. Those are the good things we do.
He's hardly an early adopter of Twitter if he joined a year and a half ago. It's been around since 2006 and gained popularity by '08. I myself joined in '09 but wouldn't call myself an early adopter.
@ryspirit Not so much a guy as it is an organization run by men who adhere to beliefs from the Bronze Age and because of wealth and what it entails in this society, which is political power and power of opinion, have the undeserving ability to force their convictions upon the rest of society.
I can't wait until the next generation holds political power and we'll finally have an opportunity to do away with with many idiotic governmental mandates.
I love Fry, but I don't think he's taken his own argument far enough, I love swearing by the way, but the problem with the word 'fuck' isn't that it is a sexual word and we don't like it, it's more that it's used as a slur and thus essentially corrupts the sentiment, sort of like the verbal version of fucking out of wedlock, the traditional view being that sex is fine in a marriage but immoral out of it. Like I said, I'm all for swearing, but that's my take on why some people aren't.
@SuperSkullDog I agree, it's also a very evocative word, used in anger, frustration and sometimes in stupidity for when someone doesn't know any other way of phrasing a sentiment. And we tend to prefer pleasant and intelligent thoughts, not overly positive or overly negative ones, which is to say that saying "this is fucking incredible" is as inappropriate as saying "this is fucking terrible."
I happen to have a friend that in my mind outshines stephen on thinking outside the bounderies of our ordinary life. But, yes there is a butt here, as a backdrop to his(madhatter of a friend I got) ideas there is very little reason and most of all lacking strucutre.
