Malmsteen is my idol. Some people say: "Malmsteen has no feeling when he plays, he just play scales faster." So I say to them: "Fuck you, Yngwie has enough feeling to blow up your brain."
This guy has great guitar skills but .... his songs are a bit tiresome to listen to. I mean there is no tempo or pauses or rhythm just straight run ons. I guess some people enjoy this type of music because this guy is famous. To each his own I guess.
His compositions are boring. Dynamically he is boring. If he made better music then his technical proficiency would be more recognized. But what better way to show your skills and ego at the same time when you compose blazing fast scale runs over shitty progressions. I like his skills but his music blows. And I listen to classical music. You faggot self righteous malmsteen fans can suck one, because his music will never meet up to Beethoven or Led Zeppelin. Beware of tendonitis wanna bes.
@dubZZish For enjoying this kind of music (pretty much about musicians actually) you have to be musician yourself I think. You can't compare Led Zep' to Malmsteen, different in every point, apple to apple please. Beethov' was such a genius, Malmsteen is cleary not.
A man from Sweden told me that you are not so active in 2010, but I would like to know if you have been experimenting with the sound of Philip Glass. I can imagine you laying down ostinatos on a loop machince, following those repeated figures with a melody, and on top of that accenting the highlights with sustained notes.
In regards to string height, low action is exactly the opposite of what Yngwie does. He has tried to get his action as high as possible because you get better sustain. (similar to a violins action which is quite high). He says his action at the 12th fret, the E string is about 4 mm above the fret. and from the wood is about 7mm. That is high'!
To add to the discussion, he is tuned to e flat. All strings are down a semi tone.
Yngwie plays scalloped necks because you get a much better control of vibrato and string bending. Not necessarily to play faster. However I think I play faster with a scalloped neck. You need to use a lighter touch otherwise you will bend the string out of tune. Just takes getting used to.
thx utube...listening to him half of my life and still see new material here.amazing thing is that he is absolutely not! out of breath after these amazing solo´s!!!awesom!!!
I didn't know the singer from Heart actually played guitar at all.
This is great. I thought she was American though. Don't know why she'd put on a silly accent like this. Unless she's in disguise of course. That would make sense. She doesn't sing at all though -or play Barracuda.
i still dont see the point in having scalloped frets.. people say it helps to play faster but surely the strings never really touch the fretboard anyway??
they do everytime you play a note on a regular neck guitar you are touching the fretboard which is why there is the choice of fretboards (i.e. maple, rosewood, ebony etc.). I understand the concept of the scalloped neck but I can't say it would make me any faster, it would probably make me play a lot more notes slightly out of key
You don't usually touche the fretboard, I don't on any of my guitars, it's close but you don't quite, but when use vibrato and bends you often do and that's why you scallop fretboards, not so you can play faster cos it doesn't help you play faster at all, it's so you get better vibrato, Yngwie said that in an interview in his recording studio once.
the point in scalloped guitars is that you play paying attention to intonation it force you to learn a light touch on the strings(if you press too much it goes sharp)so you learn to have less musce stress, and makes you better in legato technique.the vibrato is better only if you already have a good vibrato technique(notice that players used to normal fretboard tends to use fretboard friction as a reference to make vibrato)also for the bending,is more easy to go out of tune
sum:Scalloped fretboard gives you more control over the strings cause you don't have wood friction under fingers, but you must already have a great control of you frethand if you wanna play well on scalloped or you can force to accomplish this ability payng attention to the intonation of notes and the timing of your vibrato(cause you have to get used to the new "frictionless"sensation that change the way you feel the strings
If you press too hard on any guitar it'll go sharp. I take it you have a guitar with a scalloped fretboard? Don't you find it a lot easier to get good vibrato when your finger doesn't come into contact with the wood? It feels limitless and that's why many guitarists choose the scalloped fretboard.
yes because it depends from the size of the frets(the more big the more you can make the note sharp).however before the first time i played a n YJM i thought my tecnique was good, but when i tried it, i discovered how many things were uncorrect in my playing that a scalloped fretboard can help to correct(like applying the same pressure on all fingers when legato,or a better way to control bendings, playing with a scalloped improved my tecnique.
Exactly. I understand that it improves your technique but that's not the reason why most people use them, it's all about the way it feels and the way it sounds, you can hear the difference in Malmsteen's sound that it's unlike any other.
the scallops have nothing to do with the actual tone of the guitar, but it does make fast playing and bends LOT easier, while make chords and shit a lot harder (because of squeezing them out of tune is a likelihood). personally, i prefer to have the top 4 or 6th frets scalloped
Actually scallops help me a lot. I have a very heavy touch, so I usually end up touching the fretboard which slows my playing down. Keep the action low but scallop the frets and ta-daaaaaaa!
Oh, I see! That's very interesting, thanks for sharing. :D I have a heavy touch as well, so I might try out a scallop-fretted guitar next time I get the chance. ^_^
Yeah. There are many who can play fast. But in the guitar world the proof of the pudding is in the making and not the imitating. Creating such pieces as him and playing those he's already created or cheap and inferior examples of the same style does not make you as good as Malmsteen. He has a very good compositional mind. It isn't easy to convert clasical pieces and influences with rock, metal and blues tones. He's an excellent guitarist! The best is a subjective opinion. It differs for all!
right there are many many awesome guitar players out there but just a dozen are simply unique like hendrix,blackmore,van halen,page,gary moore,michael schenker,uli j.roth,yngwie malmsteen,george lynch(dokken),joe satriani,steve vai,eric johnson,john norum(EUROPE),vinnie moore,jake e.lee,randy rhoads,agnus young,stevie ray vaughn,billy gibbons(zz top) and some more guys
@BleedTheBlind , that's not true. The proof of the pudding is NOT the making, or the imitating, is how good or bad is your music. As for the rest, who cares if you play your guitar with your feet ?
As for Malmsteen, no doubt he invented a few techniques, but fuck, he was better when he was 24 than now, back then he was really inspired, now he just plays the same shit. Oh, and did not learn anything new for the last 20 years. How bad is that for an originator.

yah, it's a different type of emotion. Just because it's not sorrow or loving...doesn't mean it's not an emotion. He does play those types of tunes every now and then and they really hit home but it's not the trademark that his fans expect and certainly not what he enjoys the most. As far as emotion goes...whenever I'm feeling kind of manic or high strung he's the guy I listen to.
fantastic !! incredible !! impressive but useless. i've never heared malsteen playing a tasty tune ala clapton or stevie ray vaughan or mark knopfler. always shredding...
dont get me wrong malmsteen KICKS ASS!!!! but theres only one thing i dont like and thts his songs sound the same like the classical arpeggios and scales but he loves tht so Go Malmsteen!!
There is an important fact called 'musicality'. If you dont understand this you will not understand my comments.
If he wants to be Paganinni og e-guitar he should also play it with musicality. Without this important element it will be never smth better than techno...
yeah but actually If you confuse "musical" with "easily listenable retarded basic structured" we are gonna have some trouble comunicating
Only a wiseass prick will use the stupid excuse of "this is not musical or soulful" for something which is faster or more complex than a 12 bar nigger scales song. All music has a meaning and focus; if someone critisizes it's qualities is because of lack of comprehension and ear ignorance.
To slow and siplistic for my taste...

yah, it's a different type of emotion.

Maybe the only type of emotion you like is the emotion you get when you fuck your mother, I don't know.

guitargod323 3 years ago
fantastic !! incredible !! impressive but useless. i've never heared malsteen playing a tasty tune ala clapton or stevie ray vaughan or mark knopfler. always shredding...

Ohhhh! It's "In-vehh"!
Excellent production. It's not everyday when you see a guitar video this well produced or In-vehh being that friendly. My fav shredder.

He is an asshole - too rude
PaulGilbert2007 4 years ago
i agree for 100% with andrea0931!!
he has technique and thats all...
but many guitarrists have good technique, maybe others're just less arrogant
he plays it without expression, without musicality
Bluff002 4 years ago
"feeling" and "expression" is the excuse for the lack of ear and mediocrity
dartosdeathmetal 4 years ago
There is an important fact called 'musicality'. If you dont understand this you will not understand my comments.
If he wants to be Paganinni og e-guitar he should also play it with musicality. Without this important element it will be never smth better than techno...
Bluff002 4 years ago
yeah but actually If you confuse "musical" with "easily listenable retarded basic structured" we are gonna have some trouble comunicating
Only a wiseass prick will use the stupid excuse of "this is not musical or soulful" for something which is faster or more complex than a 12 bar nigger scales song. All music has a meaning and focus; if someone critisizes it's qualities is because of lack of comprehension and ear ignorance.
dartosdeathmetal 4 years ago 2
its not me who confuses musical with easily listenable basic structured...
most of music IS
metal normally NOT
Malmsteen absolutely IS
But seems u really dont hear what he DOESNT have...
so how can you understand my position
Bluff002 4 years ago
so then what do you mean by "musicality"?
please explain.

Yngwie is the old European classical master....he seems to be born of true blood of the kings of strings. He blows my fuckin' mind.

no you just need the tony robbins drive to succede and a time warp machine to get 500 hours of practice in a day
