Yep, l do have to agree about Rory Macfarlane's score. l was really disappointed hearing this instead of his soundtrack on the DVD release. Macfarlane's score went so freaking well with OEDO with that kick ass fusion of ambient/EBM metal music. The original japanese ost sounds so dated and bland in comparison.

I find it amusing how so many butt hurt about liking the MacFarlane intro are from the UK. Almost to the point of being angry.

Wonder what their opinion would be if Manga had released a sub version with the original music.

Personally I don't think the Manga version sounds terrible, just generic techno. It could be tacked on to any of a dozen shows and it wouldn't make a difference.

The Japanese song matches up better with what's happening on screen.

Probably because this is really bland to the point of sounding monotonous, nothing happens dynamically. The MacFarlane version is pretty generic but it's got some drive and funk, which to me suits the stories theme, not some wet J-pop music. Just my opinion, The japanese can do great themes, Macross plus has loads of soul, apart from the odd weird tune.

To me It sounds very Jappy and really poppy, Im glad they were cheap, Punk was cheap, DJs remixing other peoples work into sly bootlegs are cheap, cheap and cheerful. This Japanese version doesn't shift focus thematically it just stays in 1 boring place musically, takes itself a bit too serious, for a camp anime about murderous prisoners.

Holy crap, this video was awesome. I was just looking to watch the Cyber City opening sequence, but this video showed almost all of the awesome scenes from this show. It's only missing the best scene from it: CRYOGENICALLY FROZEN CYBERNETIC SABERTOOTH TIGERS THAT SHOOT LASERS FROM THEIR MOUTHS.

You're right. A lot of older anime are OVA so animators could do what they wanted.

Newer anime shows are mostly TV series so the content is softened up to get a wider audience. Also, anime fans have gotten younger and more female so animators are making shows targeted at that audience.

It's kind of like getting kicked in the balls from behind but it can be risky to lose the core audience in favor of a more casual crowd that watches for a while then moves on to something else.

Manga UK found it cheaper to buy the rights to the video but not pay for the Japanese dialogue or music. It was cheaper to do that themselves. So there are Brit fans who only heard the English dub and in-house theme so that's why they prefer it.

Fortunately CPM in the US did buy the rights for the original Japanese script and music.

Just the way anime fans are. They tend to prefer the first version they hear, sub or dub. Also this anime is a good example of an older show with great music composed specifically for it. I don't like the current trend of anime using tacked on themes from J Pop bands. It is probably cheaper to do this and a commercial tie in but it doesn't work as well.

Yes, exactly wartarot. Once you've listened to a character in one voice, it's near impossible to switch to another and for it feel as though it's right for that character. There's a lot of crap spoken about English dubs, but it has a lot of advantages over the original dubs, unless you're a fluent Japanese speaker and can discern regional accents and obscure cultural references. And some English dubs add a lot to a show (e.g. Cromartie High School).

I don't think subs or dubs are better than the other, just different. And the argument about which is superior was debated often back in the days of VHS.

And that's where the argument should stay. Anime fans now have enough to worry about.

That was exactly what I was saying basically. Also there are basically zero current "animes" (sorry, I hate that term) I enjoy now sadly. The closest current stuff to the old Manga Entertainment tapes I was watching in the 90's like Black Lagoon are uttery trash basically (and not good trash).

I'm going to say the same thing I said about the ending theme...I had NEVER thought that there was another version to this song, I am so used to enjoying the shorter versions of the Open and ending themes that this song is completely different to me.

...And this song still remains my favorite openning theme of ANY anime in the whole world. No matter what anime you throw at me, this openning is the best!
