Everyone talks about Buddys solos which are truly incomparable. What most dont mention is his ability to play in a big band. He was a supreme musician first and an incredible soloist. That is what made him so great in my mind. Trying to play big band music with the energy he did and set up the hits with the band is just as impressive as his soloing.
I was lucky to be at this recording and it was one hell of a gig as this clip testifies. Buddy's record's are great, but live he was phenomenal feeding off the audience reaction. We can be thankful that world contains some great players, who continue to inspire us, but in my opinion, there will never be another Buddy Rich. Musically, he really did have it all wrapped up in a charismatic personality.
I had the great pleasure to play a couple of times with Richie Cole. He wasn't bad either!
@sbildy I doubt it, not saying that your teacher never played with him or anything like that its just that I know that is Mike Price, he dances like that and I have seen other videos with his name in them, it is possible the year for the video is wrong or maybe he was subbing for your teacher.
Great footage! Mind blowing! What about the idiots who think that there are drummers better than Buddy, or talk like they are in the same league as that drummer, or this drummer.
Checking this vid with the Buddy Rich Jazz Legend narrated by M.Torme pt.2 includes a clip of the band at ronnies playing Greensleeves dated 1970.I'm pretty sure this is the same concert as this one.The BBC must have this whole concert archived.Love to see it available to bye.
Buddy was more than likely using Rogers, Slingerland or Ludwig, I've an A.Zildjian cymbal he gifted me back in the 60's. Nothing like the pure ring and sustain of that cymbal.
The reason i ask is he did use a Fibes snare on the Live at Ronnie Scotts Double album in '72.Anyhow it dos'nt really matter as Buddy made any drum sound good as he played most of them
You got that right Brother! Rogers, Slingerland, Ludwig, the top makers of the time 30's 40's and to this day however the quality of the percussion instrument as with most vintage instruments were much better then than nowadays in my opinion. The practice of manufacturing quality has somewhat diminished in production. Lets listen and look again! Amazing.....
he isn't close but give it a couple years.......but i can confidently say no one will make an impact on the frum community like Buddy Rich period..............................
Buddy seemed to change the angle of his snare drum as he got older. This era it was tilted down toward the tom much more than later in the 70's and 80's. He also added the large pang cymbal to his right rear around 1980.
The best period of his career was here. His playing was at its very peak. This genius solo might be his greatest ever. Notice the poly-rhythms when he starts his solo. He played faster, harder and even 'outer' than any other drummer in history. He had a press roll like no one else. His solos had intense drama. This is a very intense power solo almost angry. No other drummer can come close to this. I say he was the greatest musician to ever live. We will never forget.
In all the videos of any drummer I have ever seen whether great or terrible no one even comes close to Buddy's left hand. Let's go further and say his hand technique period. Buddy was simply in a league by himself.
He's playing a Roger's Dyna-Sonic solid foot board bass drummer pedal that he stole from Ellis Tollin, the father of the Dyna-Sonic snare drum and friends with Ben Strauss and Joe Thompson who hired Ellis to develop the Rogers Drum Company.
While it's certainly true Buddy played the Dyna-Sonic snare in the 60's, what your viewing and hearing in this clip is not a Rogers snare. It's a Slingerland 4 x 14" Buddy Rich signature snare. It's easy to discern in the close-ups. The snare has stick-chopper hoops and inverted SoundKing lugs for this excellent sounding 3-ply shell with reinforcement rings. And chrome over wood (COW) too!!
NO THEY WERE 5 PLY. had plenty of these..and the other mistake is the hoops..you describe sound king inverted hoops..these are the stick choppers not inverted common hoops
I'm sorry, but the command of the instrument is just such on another level. That's why he was a STAR. A household name. He owns the room when he plays.
One other point. Another reason he was so popular was that fact that his drumming was accessible. Just about everyone could listen to that and go WOW! Almost none of the around anymore. Too many guys trying to play 19 over 5 instead of 4 over 4, as my teacher used to say.
@percusmann That's the thing, sure buddy was technical, but he was musical. the technique served the musicality perfectly,to me at least. It wasn't a technical showcase, it was melodic.
Dig how Buddy does 1/4 note triplet rhythms with the hands while maintaining regular 1/4s on the bass drum (1:07 - 1:20). Awesome, and I've heard him do that kind of thing on recordings much more than I've seen him do it on videos.
Buddy's left foot is a bitch! He plays with his foot flat on the bass pedal. He doesn't cheat like I do. Picking the heal up is what I have to do to play that tune. I cheat like a drummer in a rock band.
I never realized how good his bass drum technique was. Great hands and feet. AWESOME

weird, he has an inverted angle on his snare

@wrxstiawd A lot of drummers who use the same grip as Buddy do that. Charlie Watts is a good example. Buddy's angle is very pronounced though.

Somebody explain to me that band member's face at 1:37. Was a Buddy's band inhabited by demons?

And 3:49. I'm scared of Buddy's possessed sax player.

Shit, That's a sweet funk groove: 2:52 - I would liked to se Buddy and James Brown at the stage together

Personally, I've always liked the sound of those old Slingerland chrome on brass snares.
I have one from the 70's that I believe was sold as the "spitfire" model and it really sings!

Without a doubt Slingerland, check the video at 4:28 24' bassdrum bears the manufacturers logo.

People don't realize that Buddy led some great small bands in the late 50's, and his playing then was so far beyond everyone else at the time.
I think his Prime was from about '65, right before he left James for the last time, to about 71'ish.
His records on Pacific jazz are superb, and his playing during this time period is light years beyond any other drummer on the planet.
Greatest musician ever?
I would not argue with that statement at all.
He was completely beyond catagory ~
