Start making your own food! Like dips? Dice tomatoes, onion, cilantro and a dash of lemon juice and salt=5 minutes of work. REsult? Delicious. Spinach dip? Defrost spinach, mix equal parts of mayo and plain yogurt and put in 1/3 package of dry veggy soup mix. Yummy. Dice red pepper and onion very fine dice, vinegar. Awsome topping I just had in Argentina virtually calorie free.. Mix chick peas and tahini paste in the blender for a hummus to die for. Come on, it is not that hard.
Hi SushiCat. Are you filming from bed?! I love it! I did Jenny Craig for years, partly because of my binge eating disorder and fear of keeping unportioned food around, partly because I hated to cook. I'm making all my own food for the most part now. Maybe you could commit to cooking one or two nights a week and work up from there? As for the salt love, I think it's one of those things that, if you can just get past the initial craving and find a way to cut back, you may find you crave it less.
Please use the natural salt like I had stated before and others are. I had to wean it out too. But it was strange how I didn't go for it as soon as I had the all natural no iodine sea salt. I also suggest and additional magnesium supplement.
Sorry I was not thinking about you not liking to cook when I posted my suggestions. The products already made are loaded with salt as I am sure you already know and that can be addicting. I am the crock pot queen lol It's not really cooking and you can make things from scratch very easly.
Just wanted to add that I cook sporadically. Lately I have been making a big salad with chopped veggies and throw some protein on the grill for dinner, like "I wanna be a skinny B" (marjie). It is fairly easy and I imagine very healthy. There is some salt in dressing (290 mg). Personally I think it is damn near impossible to go under the recommended amount, but I try everyday.
I can relate. When I started my program, I relied on canned soup and frozen meals. I have a big problem with water retention. I have poor circulation in my legs and can have pitting edema if I am not careful. Being more active has helped a lot with my swelling but I have also made an effort to reduce sodium intake, especially when I started reading labels and realized how much sodium was in the things I like. Reduced swelling is enough motivation to keep me low sodium most of the time.
I crave salt too. I just drink alot more water, i don't add salt too my foods & for the soup, either make your own, or buy the cans that state less sodium..progresso soups & healthy choice low sodium soups are not that bad as well. You have been doing so well, you'll be ok! :)
Wow. this is a biggy. You don't like to cook? Ready made foods are notoriously salty. No wonder your addicted. Your strawberry water is probably loaded with salt too. The more you have the more you want. They say once you recognize a "trigger" or addiction, you should abstain. It's cooking lessons for you, young lady!! That or it's salad for lunch and dinner with a home made, salt and vinegar free dressing. Good luck. I'm still trying to figure out my sugar addiction.
get low sodium foods, make things from scratch and if you don't have the time make them on a weekend or a free day, uhm, this is a tough one cause i try to lower my salt intake too but, it might mean doing a good amount of cooking from scratch because things come with lots of salt to preserve them, to make you buy more of them and too taste good
I use to be able to eat just plain salt. Right out of my hand ! I craved salt BIG time just like you. It turns out my iodine levels where low. I switched to this special sea salt, not just any sea salt. I can look up the name if you want it. I buy at my health food store that is supplemented with 43 extra things iodine provides us with. I am now almost salt free. !! This tastes just like real salt, well it is real salt, but healthier :)
I agree. I started using "Real Salt," with 70+ trace minerals, and it was sweeter tasting. It has specks of all sorts of colors in it. I started adding it for whole body nutrition, and noticed that I wanted to add less and less of it eventually.
Have you tried making your favourite meals that you like from scratch? That is the best way to cut back. I bet if you give it a try with one or two meals a week it will really make a difference in your sodium intake. Also in Canada we have a few grocery stores that sell low sodium meals take another look at your grocer for those types of meals. Hope this helps.
If you like the taste of seafood you might try using powdered kelp (found at the health food store) on things try adding other salt substitutes. But that only works if you are making your own food instead of getting it from a box.
I like your videos - I can respect you going online and doing this, BUUUUT why are you speaking so slowly??

If you are cooking try using Bragg's instead of salt.

I totally understand, it's been a problem for me too! It makes me retain water and keeps my number up.
If I consciously avoid it for a day or so, and eat lots of fresh fruit and drink juice, it seems to give me a new start.
The more salt I eat, the more I crave.

I think you should try to make at least one soup from scratch like butternut squash soup. Mmmmm yummy!
I found a Video Recipe on youtube from keithsnow for Butternut Squash Soup.
I know for sure you will enjoy it. Just get low sodium broth. Please try it:)

PS: when I say iodine, I don't mean the "crap" that comes in reg table salt. I mean the real mineral.

Do you like water-rich crisp organic green celery?
It has a calming effect, and it has organic salts.
crystalAura 3 years ago
yes I do and I was actually eating that today it was very good, but i still ate a lot of salty food and wanted more salty stuff.
