Honestly, I think his performance is breathtaking. He is always a fantastic actor. You're not supposed to over act a scene as delicate as this. His subtlety is perfect for this moment.

It was the original off-Broadway production from 2002.  The name of the theatre/company is escaping me right now (Minetta?). The actors are Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert Leo Butz, the same ones on the cast recording.
