@BLeSSeDoGkUSH420 Depends how often you use it, what for, and what type of steel it is.
Most knives are made of some sort of stainless, so you can usually get away with oiling only once a month or so, supposing you keep the blade clean after use.
@splosionmedia The type of oil shown here is Hoppe's 9 Gun Oil, available at hardware and hunting/sporting goods stores. Gun oil is general is good for knives, although it's not food safe. If you do plan to use your knife for food, I'd recommend oiling the blade with some sort of cooking oil, like olive oil.
Also, using a kleenex is a-okay. The biggest problem is usually that you have too much oil, so the rag is just there to help clean up.
@slmmaster Sure will. Give the pivot a drop of oil as well if you like a smooth, quick deployment.
The only thing about oiling folders (or pocket knives in general) is the oil has a tendency to run and drip in your pocket. Make sure you clean up the excess pretty thoroughly before carrying again, otherwise you might stain your pants!
@jaesong I actually don't oil mine too often because they don't see much use until the summer. When I'm using them in damp conditions I oil after every 2-3 uses, as they're carbon steel and therefore prone to rust.
If you're using them in fairly dry conditions, once every week or two is just fine. What's important is looking for rust along the edge, where it forms fastest. If you see rust, oil!
Nice music run in the background! I just wonder that a soldier hear bluetech! Thats music to relaxe and enjoy! But good so! Just because this thumbs up!!! More Soldieres should hear music like that! This World need more relaxed People, not war! We just kill the world with all that war! We should hold together for a better world, and look forward in the future! And also look to make it better!
@rvngizswt Well, the Switch is a folding knife. I wouldn't recommend using this much oil on a folder. Instead just use a few drops sparingly on the pivot.
Dab up the excess with paper towel. Knives that ride in your pocket and not a sheath shouldn't be too oily - it'll stain your pants.
@lordskull70 Not really - unless you live in a humid environment. If you oil it once and then put it away , it'll probably be fine until you use it. If you're worried about rust, just have a look at the exposed edge every now and then. Use a magnifying glass if possible, and try to spot dark spots. If you see it starting to develop, give the blade a wipe down and oil it up.
Neatsfoot oil is the best oil for preserving knife blades, in my experience. It is thick, and will adhere to the blade better than gun oil. Also, neatsfoot oil is a leather preserver, and should be applied to leather sheaths to prevent cracking.
well a leather sheath 4 a knife that needs 2 be oiled is a bad sheath in the first place. leather will absorb water and transfer it 2 ur blade and cause it 2 rust n what not. not only will leather absorb water that splashes on it. it will absorb moisture from the air and transfer it 2 ur blade. so having a leather sheath 4 a type of none water resistant steel that needs 2 be oiled 2 prevent it from rusting is a mistake. better 2 get kydex sheath like he has in this vid.
Another option over gun oil is cooking oil. It's not necessarily better, but if you're using your knives to prepare food, it's definitely a wise choice.

How often do you have to oil it? Is it different from metal polish? Do you have to oil it after every use since the oil might come off?

@Adanr5945 For those purposes I just use cooking oil - usually olive. Works fine as a lubricant and is edible.

lordskull70 1 year ago
@lordskull70 It prevents rust, especially on the exposed edge

do you have to oil it when you are keeping it in its case for a long time. do like have to pull it out and oil it every now and then?

Sounds like a good choice.
I'm a fan of gun oil because it's great on almost all tools.
I use olive oil on my folders though, because I mostly use them for food.

it's a mistake to expose the leather sheath to any oil, it will get softer and softer over time.
100eyes 2 years ago
I suppose that could weaken the leather, but I usually don't leave much excess - what makes it to the sheath is pretty minimal.
Also, I rarely use the leather sheath - I only bought it 'cause I like the traditional style. For actual carry I use the synthetic sheath.

if you are not prepareing food can you still use cooking oil on these types of knives
dkcheapo 3 years ago
Of course, however gun oil is probably a better option if you don't plan on using them for food, as it degrades much slower
