Sorry for those who weren't able to have enjoyed this era in life & music...Life was fun, carefree, no hate or fear of the future. Great memories & fun times. Thanks for the flashback!
@jermanietedo A war, which was long over when this song came out. @cottenbuster332, you are right. There are always those miserable people who want to start something. Just enjoy the memories!
@jermanietedo A war, which was long over when this song came out. @cottenbuster332, you are right. There are always those miserable people who want to start something. Just enjoy the memories!
One of the coolest things I ever saw was Paul Little and Alan James having a slam dunk contest at a Boston Latin School basketball practice to this song. Those guys could slam...and they could dance too. They were two of the only black guys that I knew (Latin was almost all white back then.) And I always wished I could be half as cool as them!
The 70's was wow memories of fun and parties and record houses then i would spend half of my monthly earnings for music like this thanks i love this music video
This is one of my favorite songs by Heatwave ,I just had a great time remembering all the good memories that come with this song. Thanks for posting it
This is my favorite Heatwave song! They didn't get the credit they deserved back in the 70s but the TV One show Unsung is showing people what the real deal is. These guys were great musicians and entertainers. God Bless Johnnie Wilder for his vision. Rest in peace.
Heatwave better than Kool and Gang Commodores and rest. They were the band but the accident to the lead singer leaving him paralyzed ended them quick. They went on but weren't the same. After that only real hit was Gangsters of the Groove.
It don't matter where the music originated from. I'm just happy someone; ANYONE made it. As long as it's good like this, I really don't care. Go take a music history class to vent your theories or racial frustrations. It's the music folks..........Enjoy!
Try telling an Irishman "it don't matter where the music originated from." Try telling a Jewish person, "it don't matter where the music originated from." Try telling a Polish person, "it don't matter where the music originated from." THIS music is the product of Black American music culture as much as the Polka belongs to Polish culture. It never surprises me when people outside of Black American Culture would rather regard Black Music as just "music". Give proper credit to whom it is due.
outrundaylite, you are a good person. I can tell. You are telling me stuff I already know. I love, respect and DO give credit to Black American music, more than you'll ever know. But isn't it OK sometimes to like music without ALWAYS attaching a label to it? (which is the reason I said "It don't matter", and why my iPod is so diverse) I became a better person when I realized that ethnicity is a secondary matter. I am not, however, incapable of honoring one's ethnicity. Let's get that straight.
fadguru, I acknowledge and respect your opinion. It's always OK to enjoy music. That's the purpose of music - most music anyway. However, in the case of Black American music, it is necessary to remind some of the racial origin of the music. The reason being, the music is very infectuous and influential. It is universal. It is imitated, emulated, appropriated and expropriated by other cultures, usually white culture. When that happens, Blacks usually lose credit/control of their music. Elvis?
outrundaylite, I like your talent for alliteration! I get your point. You can take it further than that. Blues: Robert Johnson, etc. It's hard to pin down where that fine line is between making Euro-Americans feel as though it's being rubbed in their face and simply trying to get decent, deserving respect. I see the dilemma. I think there are several levels to this issue. Whether it can ever be resolved or not is another matter altogether. Excellent conversation.
The can of worms was opened long before my first comment. You'd have to ask the author(s) of comments reading: I love how that geeky white guy on the keyboard wrote not only this but Michael Jackson's best hits! and others saying the true genius behind Heatwave was the "white guy". These people are obsessed with whites and whatever success they might have in a Black Music genre. Revealing this hypocrisy does nothing to upset me or prevent my enjoying life. I just tell it like it is.
Being inclusive is not the same as many white fans of Music Of Black Origin claiming white performers of recognized Black Music genres to be the genius, the catalyst, or otherwise more special than the Black originators/innovators of the music or those performers of other nationalities whose preference is Black Music. Jackie Robinson had to break a white racist-imposed color barrier in Major League Baseball. Temperton had no such barrier to impede his success in Black Music.
I haven't a problem with your statement. My thoughts on Temperton were merely a flippant observation. I love all types of music, I was brought up by a jazz musician father who taught me that there is inly good and bad music. I just think that if there was a Music of White Origin awards(I don't want this by the way) would there be the same acceptance.
Flippancy isn't always understood as such. Black Americans are very proud and protective of their music heritage. Not only is the music universally appreciated, it has also carried Black Americans through the worst and most trying challenges. AWB was being flippant when they chose to name themselves Average White Band. This doesn't always sit well with many US Blacks mindful of the historic emulation/expropriation of their music culture by US whites. Rather seen as an affront or a challenge.
May be a cultural thing then but I think that if a group of people get too protective/proud/defensive about things they get insular and aggresive to critisism. One of the great things about the Uk is that we have the ability to self critisize about anything in our culture.
I don't want to take away from the listening experience of this fine song. It's nice to see men of different races/nationalities united in the human pleasure of singing a song. While Black Americans can rightfully be proud that their cultural interpretation of music is so powerfully compelling and universially appealing, the fact that the music has the power to unite people of both genders and all races in musical celebration is the most important thing of all.
Interesting how so many white listeners get all shivery about white guys adequately performing Black music, but cry racism when reminded that the music is and is influenced by Black American music culture. I doubt there exists the opposite phenomena of Black people getting all shivery about Charlie Pride entertaining the Hee Haw crowd at the Grand Ol' Opry.
Long live the prestige, power and influence of Black American Music Culture.
What's to love about the fact that a "little geeky white guy" seemed to be able to understand and negotiate his way around Black music? It isn't as if Black people ever discriminated against white boys, keeping them from engaging in those endeavors created by and dominated by Black talent. I love how no white guy was ever able to K.O. Muhammad Ali and laugh about how Sly Stallone has to invent Apollo Creed - an Ali clone - to satisfy some white guy's unfulfilled fantasy. What a world, huh?
gifford66 Mario's my ex brother in law, sometimes i used to roadie for them, belive me you would have loved them live,i remember they played at a club called Gullivers in london, the mc said they are the best group ever to play there.enjoy!
I don't get tired of listening to the Grove Line song. It brings great nostalgia from childhood. It was great living in the 70's listening to HeatWave.
The first time I can recall hearing this this song was in one of those gangsta movies that came out in the nineties (darnit, I can't remember the name). Man, I was hooked. After that, I became a fan of HeatWave. Still, this song is just so...(I can't think of a superlative that I would like to use. Heck, y'all choose one):)
That's so funny, I thought I was the only one watching this video everyday. This song and seeing Johnnie Wilder smiling and dancing just makes me so happy!
Great music from a great band. Johnnie's smile was always there. A life well lived and an inspiration.
