Now you know why a lot of old blues performers played National Steel Guitars - so they could hit the ignorant motherfuckers over the head if they got too noisy (without smashing the guitar). I cannot imagine just wandering past anyone playing Richland Woman Blues as well as you do without being stopped dead in my tracks.
In the end it all evens out: talented unknowns like you getting ignored makes up for all the absurd adulation that many famous No-Talents get (I'm sure a few come to mind)
Tremendous talent. I hope you're playing at venues where people will listen to you. I think you would do really well in competitions where judges would praise your skills.
They were content to feed their stomachs and ignored their ears and brain. How could so many walk by and not one but a little girl caught your talent? I hope I never miss such an opportunity. Come play at Kentuck Art Festival in Northport, AL for us who have found you. It is in Oct. and there is a web site.
This is one of my faviorites you're a very brave girl braver than me in any case. Love your stuff and that Wildwood Flower is now on my favorites list
You are bad! And by that, I mean killing! And by that, I mean you can play some mean guitar! This clip reminds me of the Blues Hammer scene from Ghost World, lol.
God Bless You. I love your other posts. There is definitely a place for country blues but it wasn't at that place. Wishing you the best for future gigs.
Oh wow! You deserved much, much, better than that!
But the fact that you've posted this vid, shows me you've got that very necessary sense of humor. A serious musician who doesn't take herself seriously. Love it! Best luck!
oh the uncultured swine, i would have had to drink ten tons of liquor to do that, thats why i dont hang my art in restaurants, people there to eat not look at art, cool video, interesting social study
1:39 "diddddd someoneeeeeeee sayyyyy meattttttt !!!" haha. i guess consider admiration as a lost art, unstimulated by volatile discontent or a screamin' deal on buffalo wings, but non the less hard to put in words of appreciation when confronted by the turbidity of a real musician and a real women.
oh man. been there, done that. the oblivious audience and the mom who thinks you are her kids personal entertainment are always two of my favorite experiences!
i hate it when people are just so noisy like that, From videos i have seen on Youtube, it seems to be worse in America than England, but England can be bad enough.
What a shame! If a beautiful lady with a voice like yours was playing country blues classics note-for-note at my local bar, you bet I would listen in. Their loss!
i think the only place i would really try to gig is open mics at pubs/ bar shows or even a record store.. and festivals if possible.. it seems like a restaraunt would not work well because people are going there to eat with family and not really to see a group or solo artist..as with most things though im probably wrong.. my 2cents. good luck in the future and keep at it. you have alot of talent and if youre heart is with what you do you will succeed. peace & prosperity
That must have been hard work trying to sing over. Paradoxically your voice came over stronger, bigger, than it does on many of your vids. I would love to hear you try a couple of Patty Griffin numbers (her live stuff on here is good to watch and the story of her career an inspiration). Do you write?
Aww, ditto to what heathdwatts wrote. Back in the day... when I had an audience besides my now departed bestest ever friend and companion Evinrude (cat), I played at an art festival with a couple podium speakers and a train went by. It was a very long train... You sound wonderful and keep creating.
you are so beautiful, ci presenti la realtà, la realtà di tutti.. i am so curios about you, questo video dice molto, this video it's perfect 4 a film, you are so romantic, if one filmmaker see you...wow...so best regards pshhhhhhhh...
Do you have any coffee shops in your town? They usually have music and your audience would probably be more attentive. Gigs like the one you're playing, and I've played them as a blues guitarist and a jazz saxophonist, are not worth the frustration. The people there don't care if you play or not. By the way, I've seen seen some of your other videos, and you're a great player and singer. You just need a more appropriate venue. I hope you can find one. Good luck!
aptly named(laughin my ass off!) the human instinct of perseverance (spirit I think sounds better) amid humility (sense of humour) is to be admired...Merci Iplay
I've done a few gigs like that. "Casting Pearls before Swine" It is great the way you ignored their ignorance. The small child at the beginning was the only one to stop and take notice of the wonderful music.
It all adds to the experience of believing in your music against all the odds.
banjo--this is a great video! Any gigging musi can get this...my wife and I do a pub gig and while we are trying to get into a nice OCarolan tune, the plates and forks are chatterin' away...I can't believe you are doing that gig on a chair without a back, ouch...!
This looks like a scene out of a Woody Allen film! The next time you play at your local "I-HOP" make sure you eat your share of pancakes! You definately have GOT IT for talent but I guess you've got to pay your dues...
WOW... YOU deserve SO MUCH BETTER than this... I've gigged for many years, solo and in bands, and I know how rough it can be. (I also know how amazing it can be) :)
I sincerely hope you got paid decently for this venue. Your talent and passion for the blues is so very pure and evident from your other vids. I'm wishing you some better venues in the near future...
just wanted to say that first off im a subscriber and i definately know when i hear somebody that has something. next to my children, music is the most important thing in my life. you most definately have "it". You can bet your ass if i had been there i woulda been on that other stool! lol! Just wasnt the right setting at all for your style or music at all for that matter. Keep going and i'll buy the cd just as soon as its out!
wow.. this HAS to be one of the MOST heartbreaking vids on YT. Anyone contemplating going out to gig in a restaurant would hang it up after viewing this. Kudos to you I PLAY BANJO, for doing it anyway. This is the true definition
of payin' yer dues. My heart really went out to you when those people started singin'
Happy Birthday.. pheww! Tough! The angle of the camera is nearly surreal- it
seems to give the worst possible impression of this sad gig. I think I prefer
It sucks playing in restaurants, on big game nights and in places that aren't set up for live music. I got wedged between a bar's only bathroom and its office once during a New Year's party and had do a lot of dodging while I played, so I feel your pain. Most of the time, I just holler my lyrics when things get loud and that quiets 'em down.:) But, you sound great. Keep it up!
Been there so many times. I've even played four thousand seat theaters opening for big names and the audience couldn't care less who you are or what you are doing. It's worth it though when they are finally coming only to see you. A guy that I toured with for years always says "Touring is like being in hell for 22 hours a day, but the other two make it all worth while." Keep on going, you're doing great!!
Ok as painful as this is to watch I would've traded gigs with you in a heartbeat. I played my first gig at a place called Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta 2 weeks ago and it was TOTAL SILENCE. Freaked me out!!! You have an amazing voice and I wish I could pick like you. Keep on keepin' on!
This is priceless. Brave of you for posting. Anyone who plays music in public can identify with this. Laugh or cry? But eventually getting a gig where folks come to actually listen to you makes it all worthwhile.
I would love to see you in small clubs , coffee shops, galleries, bistros etc, where you will find an audience for your amazing music, there are plenty of us out there that would love to hear you play and be much more grateful than the people in that place.
You did good though, you didnt look phased by the distractions etc, and if you can keep your head there you will do fine on stage
Get yourself to a festival in England we love the blues here.
No offense to your playing because you're great (obviously), but how the hell did you end up playing in the middle of a restaurant? I don't mean at a restaurant, but literally in the middle of where patrons and waitresses are just walking around.
HAHA This is pretty funny! You are my favorite you tube picker - I'm so glad to see even someone with your talent sometimes gets gigs like I've had with my very limited talent... keep the good ones comin - please post a note if you ever get a gig anywhere near the albany area!
Reminds me of Hsiao-hsien Hou's film FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI, or a snippet from an early Denis Johnson short story. Great editing, sound and choice of footage. I'm sure you play a "Jump Salty" guitar, but the video seems beyond all that. You've plucked a lily from the mire.
o.o happy birth day to you. yeah location is right. you should play where you're more in the spotlight. louder. where things aren't so interrupting. like at a flea market or in a park or scenic part of town where people roam ^^
You meet all types and play all sorts of gigs ;) Your experience here is VERY much like when I play the local born-again christian ice cream parlor :) But the kids love it :D
I responded with a drunken rant that was going on OUTSIDE of a local bar I was playing :D
Keep going ! I could still hear your voice above everyone making that awful din and you sounded just as good as when you practice. Maybe that kind of place is not ready for Country Blues!
Great to see you taking your music out to the people. I play in a pub jam every now & again but the nerves are always the same. A smattering of applause once in a while does wonders though!
dag, yo... hell of a scene goin' on there! props fer playin' out! i'm just startin' to get there myself... kinda makes you long for that quiet bedroom, huh? you sound great (as always). keep it up an' maybe try to find a less hectic place to play. but i guess every modern day country blues musician that plays out has to get used to being in the background at some point. it happens to the best of us...

Some people just don't appreciate talent when it's right in front of them.
It's soul-destroying ! Don't let it get you down. I've been there umpteen times like that too.
Perhaps a re-think on the type of venues you agree to play ?
You deserve better !
