Rise Against is hardcore rock at the earlier albums and punk rock on the later albums. Some might call the whole band 'political rock' but you're obviously not acquainted with Rise Against if you think if they're a metal band. :)

I'm sure i don't know as much about Rise Against as you do, but i can tell you one thing i do know about them, that is they are not punk. I don't mean this as a criticism but they're more rock or new punk, some of their songs sound more like punk then others, but i can tell you they're not punk. I'm not telling you they're bad, i quite enjoy their music but I'm warning you others may constantly harass you if you say that around them.

Overall i think they're a really good band despite that.
