I don't know.... I see the argument because I basically feel the same way. Wouldn't ever give the shot to my daughter, yet HPV is so devastating, that if this shot does prevent it without side effects that would be awesome. I think it's one of those things we have to wait and see. Once the populations in inner cities decline because the birthrate is down, they'll have to trace that back to something.

I recently took a pap last year and found out that I tested positive for HPV. The doctor kept trying to persuade me to take Gardisil. I asked him if Gardisil would cure it he said "No" So, I asked him if I already have HPV what would be the purpose of me taking the shot??He was annoyed and walked away. They don't have a way to measure HPV in men like they do in women. So the study done for the vaccine was only done on women, so the efficacy of the vaccine is only proven for women. That's why it's for girls. They are giving it to some boys, but the study demonstrating the vaccine's efficacy and safety was only on girls. Yes HPV is transmitted from men as well, but the greatest danger of HPV is only for women so it is quite logical to have the women choose to protect themselves.

the four strains in the vaccine are responsible for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts-- you have much better odds if you get the vaccine than if you don't. You are correct that the vaccine does not protect you completely from HPV, but it does protect you from most of the serious risks of HPV.

HPV is indeed transmitted by intercourse and men do have the virus. In fact in men it causes penile cancer, but the rates are much much less than cervical cancer. The vaccine is intended to be used in both sexes, and some would like it added to the pediatric vaccinations. However, the FDA would only approve it for use in women.

HPV is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, not sex alone. Meaning condoms do not protect! I have HPV, and am going through treatments for pre-cancerous cells. Better tell your kids not to rub genitals together either. And you know what, most people have no clue what HPV is!
