We try and put "good" people in office, such as Obama. The real goal should be stopping bad people from getting into office, which we didn't do with Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld. And we had two shots at it.
Good people simply aren't attracted to power. For the most part, they want to be teachers, doctors, nurses, aids and assistants. Thus, damage control - stopping the bad guys - seems the only logical process in politics.
