It should run this game on ultra depending on core 2 quad ( most should) my gts 250 is powerful enough to run it on ultra so your gtx 260 dshould be great for this.

Pay? You don't have to pay, Steam account is free to create - you need only few minutes to do so and that's all.

Steam could be useful for full version as well - it's said that all patches will be distributed this way, not to mention being able to download the game without having a disc, totally for free until the end of all days.
