i think that most people are afraid to accept that their favorite musicians grow and change. it involves expanding your mind, which most people don't want to do. pop music is beautiful. i have followed slowdive/mojave/neil since the first record came out. each one is amazing for what it is. i don't expect another slowdive record in 2010. that sound is dated now. this is a great song. neil is simply expanding his artistry.

i totally agree with you, except the outdated part. Music itself never gets old... just the people who make it. But there was definitely a place for shoegaze, & people can still like that... or prefer a band's later works. I love finding other projects of bands i like (ie, Failure & Autolux). I just heard this album today, but it will definitely be played a lot on my mp3 player in the near future :)

I love every single album by Neil Halstead (from Slowdive ones, Pygmalion included to Mojave 3 and Neil solo ones) but the only one I refuse to listen is Puzzles like you: it sounds just like pop!! Neil already got on the right path with Oh Mighty Engine but this album (and Breaking the ice is one of the worst songs of the cd) should be forgotten (everyone makes mistakes).

Its just the same retro carousel-like marketing machine. The thing about China is, try as they might, they just cannot sell the whole music industry machine to the populace, they just wont have it. :D The future is out there somewhere, and I dont think it means looking backwards. Keep up the great work Mister Halstead.

an outsider(when the fashion industry has exported this image to the whole planet) There is no question about it, the guy abov is correct: Slowdive made some of the most dramatic moving music ever in the history of the world but... You know that old adage about splitting up a shoegaze band before the whole scene gets co-opted by the music industry. Personally, Im glad it celebrated itself, I mean who wants those Oasis type fans anyway?

My guess: Neil got ill over the spacey pop melodrama that is slowdive, released pygmalion in order to live with himself. then when creation dropped him he wised up to what labels accept; decided to form a folk rock band like it was getting back to "fresh roots", and hasnt looked back since. the only thing that might come close to a slowdive reunion would be mojave playing slowdive tracks randomly on tour

He does, however, play some Mojave on his solo tours. I saw him at Leeds Faversham, and his set consisted of "Oh! Mighty Engine" and some of the slower, folkier Mojave songs.

I saw these guys a couple of years ago with my brother in Toronto, it was in a very small venue, I was so close to neil (the singer) I could almost touch him! The show was VERY good and afterwards I got to meet him!

cant say i like them right now but remember, before you criticize that slowdive WAS basically a pop band with a lot of noise and keys and brian eno-ness added...so im going to try to like these guys.

I've one album picked up for free from a pile of unwanted CD's at a radio station I used to work at.

For the life of me i can't remember the name but as with that album and all the songs here on youtube, there is nothing that anyone could find objectional. Not that I wish to place them in the realms of blandness of course, as every song to me is a perfect creation. Wow.  Goooood band.
