The main reason we have military bases everywhere is so we can be flexible. It takes a lot less time to move troops into an existing base in response to a crisis than to get the needed agreements and build a base while a crisis is happening.
For the nation hosting the base, the largest advantage is a deterrent to other major powers.
Ex: Taiwan. We've had military bases there for many years and they've kept China from attacking and reclaiming the island.
we have bases around the world so that we can be ready to fight wherever we're needed. we have agreements with those countries to be there.....it is beneficial to both sides. we would never let another country set up shop here, because we don't have to. that's how it is when youre a superpower. no one will be able to tell you the cost of keeping them open, but it doesnt matter because they are not going to close them. its all about strategy.....
@798unionpipeliner it is not beneficial to have american nuclear weapons up the road from my home. In fact it makes our area a much more likely to be attacked. The US fights where it wants, not where it is needed. And most people don't want your armed thugs occupying their country, strategy or no. Time for the empire to end.
