The thing is, most of the people killed weren't demonstrating students; the citizens of Beijing set up road blocks to stop the military from getting to the square and actually fought with the soldiers. I don't think the military's actions were right, but I'm not sure how much of a choice they had.

The Students had options to evacuate and live to make more pragmatic reforms, but people like Chai Ling and other radicals sought to sacrifice their fellow students instead of making actual progress.

I am a white American and I can say that China does not have a military as sophisticated as the Americans. They may have the largest army but they are not trained very well and have no experience. Hence they being beaen back by the ragtag army of Vietnam. Their navy and air force is pathetic. South Korea alone probably could beat China and North Korea at the same time.
